An Outstanding Textbook Putting The Arduino Microcontroller In The Context of Embedded Computer Design

Professor Barrett has written an outstanding textbook based upon the Arduino Open Source (Hardware) Microcontroller Development Board. As a hobbyist, and one who develops psychophysical applications with the Arduino, I have come to understand this platform as an entire architecture containing the "System On A Chip" ATmega 328 Microcontroller, including bi-directional I/O ports, a powerful USART (Serial Controller), A/D (Analog to Digital) and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Components as well as various types of Memory that can be employed for On-Chip Programming. More importantly, I have come to understand the full end-to-end process of designing an Embedded Application, such as a robot with multiple sensors and motors, or an advanced flight simulator system, as a direct result of reading this excellent text. Dr. Barrett explains the theory and processes of interacting with various Sensors and Actuators, and such topics a Signal Conditioning with Operational Amplifiers, Analog to Digital Conversion, use of Interrupt Service Routines, On-Chip Timers, Motor Control, and the benefits of Structure Diagrams and the UML Modeling Language in Software Design for Embedded Systems Development.
In my opinion, this excellent and complete textbook could best serve the needs of a Software Engineering student who is developing their first Embedded Computing project, or an advanced hobbyist who seeks to get the most they can out of the powerful and easy to use Arduino Microcontroller System.
