Foodopoly: The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America, by Wenonah Hauter

“A terrific primer on the corporate control of food in the United States, and the actions of those who fight back” (Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved), Foodopoly takes aim at the real culprit behind America’s food crisis: the ever-growing consolidation and corporatization of food production, which prevents farmers from raising healthy crops and limits the choices that people can make in the grocery store.

In the tradition of the bestselling The World According to Monsanto, Foodopoly tells the shocking story of how agricultural policy has been hijacked by lobbyists, driving out independent farmers and food processors in favor of companies such as Cargill, Tyson, Kraft, and ConAgra. “A meticulously documented account of how we have lost control of our food system” (Steve Gliessman, professor emeritus of agroecology, UC–Santa Cruz), the book demonstrates how the impacts ripple far and wide, from economic stagnation in rural communities at home to famines in poor countries overseas. In the end, author Wenonah Hauter argues that solving this crisis will require a complete structural shift, a grassroots movement to reshape our food system from seed to table—a change that is about politics, not just personal choice.

From Publishers Weekly
In a meticulously researched tour de force, Hauter, the executive director of Food & Water Watch, examines the pernicious effects of consolidation in every sector of the food industry. Not only has deregulation and the weakening of antitrust laws led to a significant reduction of competition, it has failed to allow the consumer to benefit from the economies of scale achieved by larger production facilities. More dangerous for our democracy, Hauter argues, the surviving firms have used their wealth to capture the political system in order to rewrite the regulations for their benefit. They have persuaded governments to subsidize their irrigation costs with publicly funded water projects; successfully pushed for the enactment of the Cuban sugar tariff, which directly led to high-fructose corn syrup becoming the sweetener of choice; and weakened oversight by federal bureaucracies, preventing the FDA from testing meat for contamination before and during processing. In fact, Hauter suggests, the FDA is no longer capable of enforcing its regulations at all and must resort to persuasion and, at times, begging. Though alarming, Hauter's argument is undermined by her resort to the suggestion of conspiracy on occasion. Overall, though, the book deserves a place on the shelf beside the burgeoning journalistic explorations of the dangers of the current system. (Dec.)

Review
"Excellent…Wenonah Hauter, the executive director of Food and Water Watch…details the takeover of our food system."
—Mark Bittman, The New York Times

"From familiar ground such as the obesity epidemic and junk-food advertising, to the lesser-known yet important terrain of corporate supply chains and a largest-takes-all food infrastructure, Hauter provides bountiful evidence to buttress her deep working knowledge of the food system. . . . Foodopoly is politically brave—not just naming names in the agri-industrial complex, but pushing us to think more deeply about the politics and economics that dictate our diets beyond our own roles as shoppers and eaters."
—San Francisco Chronicle

"A shocking and powerful reminder of the distance between our image of the family farmer and the corporate agribusiness reality. Make sure you read it before dinner."
—Bill McKibben, author of Earth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet

"Foodopoly is a meticulously documented account of how we have lost control of our food system, as well as a roadmap for taking it back. We must respond to this call to action."
—Steve Gliessman, Professor Emeritus of Agroecology, UC-Santa Cruz

"Food is life. Today food and life are being hijacked by corporations — seed by Monsanto, trade by Cargill and giant agribusiness, retail by Walmart. And our earth, our farmers, our health are being sacrificed to increase corporate profits and control over our food systems. This is the story Hauter tells in Foodopoly. This is a story we must hear in order to create food democracy and food freedom."
—Dr. Vandana Shiva

"Wenonah Hauter knows where the bodies are buried beneath the amber waves of grain. This is a terrific primer on the corporate control of food in the US, and the actions of those who fight back. By turns heartbreaking, infuriating and inspiring, Foodopoly is required reading for anyone who wants to understand both the scale of the challenge in reclaiming our food system, and the urgency for doing so."
—Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System

"This may be the most important book on the politics of food ever written in the US. Hauter doesn't buy the notion that we can buy our way to a healthy future. She puts the blame for our food crisis squarely where it belongs: on the political and agribusiness leaders who benefit from a corporate-dominated food system. Read this essential book and take action!"
—Maude Barlow, author of Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Fight for the Right to Water

"Foodopoly makes a compelling case for how corporate consolidation and control of the food supply are at the root cause of a host of problems. Hauter is absolutely right that unless we break the stranglehold of corporate power with significant policy change, such as enforcing federal antitrust laws, the food movement will continue to have only marginal success."
—Michele Simon, president of Eat Drink Politics and author of Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back

"A meticulously researched tour de force."
—Publishers Weekly

"We all know how Monopoly ends: one person corners Boardwalk and Park Place and the rest are screwed. Winner-take-all is fine for a board game, but disastrous, as Wenonah Hauter reveals in this important new book, when it comes to our food. In compelling prose, Hauter breaks down why the concentration of corporate power over food matters—and what we can do about it. Kudos to Hauter for this vital book—essential reading for anyone who wants safe food and clean water."
—Anna Lapp, founder, Food Mythbusters and author, Diet for a Hot Planet

Warning: The Foodopoly Message May Make You Sick!
By Joan Levin
In this encyclopedic examination of the history and politics of the American food production system, long-time agricultural scholar-activist Wenonah Hauter dissects the links binding agricultural policy, giant financial interests, and food production conglomerates into a highly consolidated, virtually impenetrable fabric resistant to input from public health, environmental, labor, or consumer interests.

The "cheap food" lavishly displayed in our supermarkets is hardly cheap given the price we all pay for deteriorating health, disappearing soil, dangerously polluted land, water and air, economic crises for farm labor, and the most cynical disregard for consumer health. The enormous profitability of our highly monopolized food production system exists in large part because there is virtually no requirement upon those profiting most to bear the cost of these negative externals.

As one of many examples, the drive to monetize every ounce of animal flesh by routinely feeding healthy animals antibiotics so that they might quickly grow to market weight in cheaper, filthy, crowded conditions has resulted in the squandering of the greatest medical advance of the 20th Century - antibiotics - as our "miracle drugs" become useless against drug-resistant strains of microorganisms emanating from these animals and infecting foods intended for human consumption. Today, while advanced antibiotics (many with serious adverse effects) address some of these organisms, we are also faced with organisms that seem resistant to any drugs now available.

Even organic foods, that last outpost of sanity for health-conscious consumers seeking respite from the prevailing situation, have been compromised both by efforts to weaken organic standards, as well as by a poorly conceived public relations campaign attacking organics as "unnecessary" and even "elitist."

If you are concerned about what has happened to the American food supply today - and you should be, because it costs you plenty whether you know it or not -- Foodopoly will be a fascinating read and a valuable resource.

Comprehensive coverage of American food/agricultural policies and issues
By Moligale
This book contains TONS of information about what is going on with the American (an even international) food system. It was also really eye-opening to see how extensively corporations control not only our food, but our entire government. The message I took away from the book was that in order to make any long-lasting change to our broken food system, we have to take back our government from corporations, rather than believing we can just buy local, organic food (although that is definitely a piece of the solution). We need to start demanding that antitrust laws be enforced to prevent further consolidation of our food into fewer and fewer hands. I highly recommend this book to everybody and anybody. Although this is a highly complex issue, it's written in a way that is accessible to somebody who has no previous knowledge about our food system. Part One of Foodopoly covers the history of food and agricultural policy, which was difficult for me personally to get through, but it was really important for understanding the context for the rest of the book. Other than that, it was a great book that really got me fired up!

If you eat, you should read this book.
By Argie Baker
Living in the Midwest, I have lamented agribusiness's rapid increase in huge factory farms and feedlots, and the resulting decline in small farms and small towns. Hauter takes you step by step through how and why this has happened. She thoroughly explains how a very few corporations have taken over all aspects of food production, including such things as produce, food safety, factory farming, distribution, and specific examples of raising hogs, beef, and poultry in huge, confined feeding operations. When a chicken spends its whole life in an area of a couple of square feet, it makes me reluctant to eat chickens anymore. The poor farmer gets little or no money for raising the product. She also points out that these corporations, by being politically very active, resist any regulations. In the end, she outlines what we need to do to stop corporate control of the entire food chain. The book should be mandatory reading by congress and the president.

Down by the river bank, where the wind whispers through the willow trees, is a very pleasant place to have a lunch party with a few friends. But life is not always so peaceful for the Mole and the Water Rat. There is the time, for example, when Toad gets interested in motor-cars - goes mad about them in face . . .

The story of the adventures of Mole, Rat, Badger, and Toad has been loved by young and old for over a hundred years.

I first bought the original version of Wind in the Willows, but could hardly slog through it. This version is much easier to read. My granddaughter's in the play so I wanted to know more about the story and the characters before I saw the play. I read this is a day. Yay!

From Publishers Weekly
Belmond gets her story off to an appealing start by tapping into the near-universal fantasy of a distant, elderly relative leaving behind a pile of loot. Penny Nichols (yes, she hates her silly name) is toiling as a low-paid historical researcher on film sets when she learns her Great-aunt Penelope—whom she met only once—has died and left her, well, something. Her parents dispatch her to London for the reading of the will, where she is reintroduced to her dashing cousin Jeremy. Penny gets left the contents of a garage adjoining her aunt's villa in the south of France and travels there with Jeremy to discover it contains a rare antique car. It doesn't take long for the family to split into factions competing for greater shares of the estate, which provides the narrative with an oversize share of twists and turns, especially concerning Jeremy's true parentage. It's evident from the moment of Penny and Jeremy's first encounter as adults that they will end up together, and the thin obstacles the author places between them quickly become tedious. Luckily, Belmond's spirited heroine is likable enough to guide readers through the wobbly plot. (Jan.)

From Booklist
The heroine of Belmond's first outing, the improbably named Penny Nichols, finds herself an heiress after her great aunt Penelope dies. Penny flies to London for the reading of Penelope's will and is met by her dashing cousin Jeremy, a barrister. Jeremy receives Penelope's luxurious French villa, while Penny is given her London flat and the contents of the villa's garage. Although their feckless cousin Rollo is well provided for, too, he is envious of his cousins' inheritances and drops a bombshell: Jeremy might not be a blood relation. The revelation sends Jeremy into a depressive funk, causing him to withdraw from Penny, who becomes determined to discover the truth. As she starts to dig into the family's history, the mystery takes her back several generations, and she realizes the connections among them all are more complex than she ever could have imagined. An entertaining yarn with family drama and intrigue aplenty. Kristine Huntley

Review
Belmond's debut novel combines suspense, romance and crafty wit. The protagonist is a character to cheer for, and the mystery subplot will keep readers turning the pages. -- Romantic Times Book Review

Present Day London and the South of France

To describe this as a rather lovely novel would be to grossly understate the case. It is utterly charming. The story begins with our heroine, Penny Nichols, working on the French Riviera as historical researcher and set design consultant for Pentathlon Productions. They are wrapping up their latest cable TV movie about historical women when Penny receives an urgent call from her mother in the States. Penny's Great-aunt Penelope -- for whom she is named -- died, and Penny must go to London for the reading of the will. As a child of nine, Penny's parents took her to England to meet her mother's family, and Penny spent happy days there together with her Cousin Jeremy. Jeremy is now an attorney and makes all the arrangement for Penny's trip to London.

Penelope Laidley was Jeremy's great-aunt, also, and her surprisingly large estate is to be divided among Penny; Penny's mother; Jeremy; and Rollo Laidley, a nephew of Penelope's. Now, Rollo is a dissipated character who lives off whichever of the family will fund his vices, and he's not happy with his share of the spoils under either will, the English or the French. He believes he has the ammunition to contest the French will that leaves a villa in the south of France to Jeremy and the contents of its garage to Penny.

A RATHER LOVELY INHERITANCE is told entirely through Penny's voice as she and Jeremy bounce back and forth between England and France investigating their windfalls. Penny is a spirited, intelligent woman of thirty whose failed past relationships have left her a bit hesitant, but not bitter. If she sometimes longs for the elegance and civility of the past she researches, she doesn't hide from the present. She's a good daughter and a warm friend -- something Jeremy will need before it's all over, whether he asks for it or not. Penny is not at all self-centered and she's a keen observer. That and the excellent characterization and dialogue are why the first person point of view works so beautifully in this case. A RATHER LOVELY INHERITANCE is definitely not chick lit; no obsessing over weight or shoes here. No bed-hopping, either, only a sweet touch of romance. If a novel can be both gentle and lively, surely this is one.

A RATHER LOVELY INHERITANCE tantalizes and entertains with its mystery and skullduggery, inner and exterior conflicts, and interesting characters, including the late Great-aunt Penelope; Jeremy, a hero whose image of himself and his place in the family is severely challenged; and Penny, a perfectly lovable heroine. It's a rare gem of a book that leaves behind a feeling of pure pleasure. For these reasons, I'm awarding it a Perfect 10. -- Jane Bowers, Romance Reviews Today

A frothy, entertaining first novel. My grandaughter and I enjoyed the mystery, the excitement of being in several exciting cities. The author has a sence of humor and a style that I will look for again. When will she write another?

Rather Lovely ...
By rebelmomof2
It is a lovely little book but it's very typical of chick lit these days ~~ a young woman struggling to make ends meet meets Mr. Wonderful, falls in love, comes into a pile of loot, travels across Europe to find out some deep secret and everything ends very happily. Don't get me wrong ~~ I read these books often enough for two reasons, it's fluffy and it's entertaining. It's perfect for a busy mom's life when she doesn't have time to do anything else ...

This book focuses on Penny Nichols, a young woman who is very interested in history. She was on location when she received word that her great-aunt had died, leaving her an antique car and a gorgeous flat in London. Her cousins also received lush gifts too, but that's where the fun begins. There is a chase across Europe in search of a missing item, a missing relative and all that fun stuff.

This book rated a three simply because it's very predictable ~~ and there was no suspense built up to keep the reader interested. There's barely any interesting historical fact listed ~~ and it's just a fluffy book written to be amusingly entertaining. It's perfect book to take to the beach or on the long plane ride, or reading while surrounded by young kids who interrupt your reading every five minutes!
