Indespensible Handbook

My whole life before finding out about this book I was always inadvertently adhering to the guidelines of a stoic philosopher, but couldn't properly articulate my thoughts and organize them as well as I would have. Epictetus puts all of my thoughts in deep and timeless prose, conveniently split up into perfect, bite-sized chunks with memorable lines and quotes.

Probably what I like most about Epictetus' teachings is that he has not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. His background only supports his stoic teachings experiences even further by showing that even a near-disabled slave forced to work for most of his early life, with no safety net to fall back on, can be free and happy. I can't think of a stronger test of a way of life than that one.

The basic stoic philosophy is that our fate is already decided for us and we are powerless to control it, and though we apply both negative and positive connotations towards events that occur within our fate, ultimately fate (or as he refers to it as "the gods' will") is beyond our understanding and is neutral, so we are the only ones left that are punishing ourselves in times of seeming crisis. The true secret to happiness is learning to accept that we can't control outside forces, but we have total control and power over our own opinions and actions. Through this method of thought, the stoic philosopher can endure the harshest, most crippling events, and come out unscathed or possibly even stronger, knowing that any negativity coming from any events is his own product of his ego lashing out to protect itself.

With the lessons of Epictetus, you can learn to not run or hide from entropy and by doing so live your life in fear and senseless anger, but rather embrace it. And in your embracing of chaos you begin to realize that the universe is not in fact the recklessness you imagined, but ironically an almost entirely organized system of random acts. If you or someone you know are going through a hard time in life, there is almost no better reading than this book.

Practical Lessons from Living from Epictetus

The book is small- yet packs a punch in its power. Definitely buy the book if you are interested, you won't regret it. Some lessons I learned from Epictetus from the Enchiridion:

On the costliness of fortune: poisonous nature of fortune:

XX: "As when you see a viper or an asp or a scorpion in an ivory or golden box, you do not on account of the costliness of the material love it or think it happy, but because the nature of it is pernicious, you turn away from it and loath it; so when you shall see vice dwelling in wealth and in the swollen fullness of fortune, be not struck by the splendor of the material, but despise the false character of the morals."

On contentment:

CLXXII: Epictetus being asked, What man is rich, answered, He who is content (who has enough)

CXXXVII: Contentment, as it is a short road and pleasant, has great delight and little trouble.

CXXIX: He is a wise man who does not grove for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

XXIV: As it is better to lie compressed in a narrow bed and be healthy than to be tossed with disease on a broad couch, so also it is better to contract yourself within a small competence and to be happy than to have a great fortune and to be wretched.

On expecting the worst:

CLVIII: If you wish to live a life free from sorrow, think of what is going to happen as if it had already happened.

On hearing more than speaking:

CXLII: Nature has given to men one tongue, but two ears, that we may hear from others twice as much as we speak.

On God:

CXVII: Let your talk of God be renewed every day, rather than your food

CXIX: Think of God more frequently than you breathe.

CXX: If you always remember that whatever you are doing in the soul or in the body, God stands by as an inspector, you will never err (do wrong) in all your prayers and in all your acts, but you will have God dwelling with you.

On (avoiding) pleasure:

CX: A man should choose (pursue) not every pleasure, but the pleasure which leads to goodness

On decision making:

CI: Deliberate much before saying or doing anything, for you will not have the power of recalling what has been said or done."

On duty:

LXXXVIII: As the sun does not wait for prayers and incantations to be induced to rise, but immediately shines and is saluted by all: so do you also not wait for clippings of hands, and shouts and praise to be induced to do good, but be a doer of good voluntarily, and you will be beloved as much as the sun.

LXXVIII: As the fire-lights in harbors by a few pieces of dry wood raises a great flame and give sufficient help to ships which are wandering on the sea; so also an illustrious man in a state which is tempest-tossed, while he is himself satisfied with a few things does great services to his citizens.

XVII: Remember that thou art an actor in a play of such a kind as the teacher (author) may choose; if short, of a short one; if long, of a long one: if he wishes you to act the part of a poor man, see that you act the part naturally; if the part of a lame man, of a magistrate, of a private person (do the same). For this is your duty, to act well the part that is given to you; but to select the part, belongs to another.

On hope:

LXXXIX: Neither should a ship rely on one small anchor, nor should life rest on a single hope.

On ignoring haters:

LXXXV:As a goose is not frightened by cackling nor a sheep by bleating, so let not the clamor of a senseless multitude alarm you.

On governing a state:

LXXXII: Do not decorate the walls of your house with the valuable stones from Euboea and Sparta; but adorn the minds (breasts) of the citizens and of those who administer the state with the instruction which comes from Hellas (Greece). For states are well governed by the wisdom (judgement) of men, not by stone and wood.

LXXXI: You will do the greatest services to the state, if you shall raise not the roofs of the houses, but the souls of the citizens: for it is better that great souls should dwell in small houses than for mean slaves to lurk in great houses.

On speaking:

LXXVII: Attempt on every occasion to provide for nothing so much as that which is safe: for silence is safer than speaking. And omit speaking whatever is without sense and reason.

On business:

LXXV: Lampis the shipowner being asked how he acquired his wealth, answered, With no difficulty, my great wealth; but my small wealth (my first gains), with much labor.

On friendship:

XLVII: Instead of a herd of oxen [wealth], endeavor to assemble herds of friends in your house.

XLI: It is better to live with one free man and to be without fear and free, than to be a slave with many.

On the soul:

XXXI: In banquets remember that you entertain two guests, body and soul: and whatever you shall have given to the body you soon eject: but what you shall have given to the soul, you keep always.

On virtue:

XIII: No man who loves money, and loves pleasure, and loves fame, also loves mankind, but only he who loves virtue.

On frugality:

XIV: As you would not choose to sail in a large and decorated and gold-laden ship (or ship ornamented with gold), and to be drowned; so do not choose to dwell in a large and costly home and to be disturbed (by cares).

On death:

XXI: Let death and exile and every other thing which appears dreadful be daily before your eyes; but most of al death: and you will never think of anything mean nor will you desire anything extravagantly.

VIII: Seek not the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life.

It's okay...

I love how thin and concise this book is, but I feel like some of Epictetus' ideas are somewhat unclear as a result of the translation.

If you're reading this for the first time then I would probably look for a version for a better translation. If you've already read this and want a light, thin, and concise version of "Enchiridion," then this could be a good purchase for you.

VBA Programming for Microsoft Project '98 through 2010

Poorly organized, poorly edited, poorly written. With all that it gets 2 stars because sadly it is the only book that even looks badly at the Project object model. If you have to write code for Project, this is the only game town so look for a used affordable copy and bite the bullet. Note you won't find much better help on the web either. I'll add this if I am ever in need of other books on various development issues and I have a choice between this author and someone else, someone else wins hands down. Additionally this is about the only computer book I've ever submitted a review for is how bad this thing is. But again if you have to write code for Project, go on and buy it anyway.

About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.  They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.
 
Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects.  Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.
 
Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades.  Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau.  Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything.  Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

Excellent Textbook, Easy to Use

As a student in my first geology course, I find this book amazingly helpful. It is laid out well, the material interestingly presented, the writing style clear and concise. Technical terms are explained and concepts unpacked carefully. Best of all, the author tells the reader what to look for and reviews with "concept checks" the material as it is being read. The chapter reviews at the end are quite well done. My only suggestions would be to vary the order of the material. The chapter of plate tectonics, for example, would be better much earlier on, since much of the material depends on the concepts dealt with there. And there are a few places where technical terms that are not universally used (a problem in geology in general) could be identified with other equivalent terms that the student will encounter elsewhere. If this is in fact the case, I have not yet found out where and how it is done. Overall, an excellent text. I have the Kindle version, which works fantastically.

This book, with over 500 pages of text, is an excellent reference for all things related to geology. It's loaded with excellent graphics: charts, illustrations, pictures, graphs, all enhancing the rich and detailed text. Everything about geology is covered, from the formation and internal structure of the earth to the various rock types that make up the surface of our planet and much, much more. Erosion, weathering, glaciation, earthquakes, volcanoes, it's all included. Geology is all around us and the authors make the subject interesting, understandable, and very readable. This book will greatly enhance the knowledge of anybody who's interested in our planet.

If you buy a valid access code, it lets you read the newer (12th) edition online!

I took Geology 101 using this older edition even tho my class was using the 12th ed. The sub-sections inside a chapter are numbered in the newer edition but not in this one. I finished the class with no problem though :) In most chapters, the contents are very much the same!

Pleasantly surprised to find an ebook access code in it, it allowed me to read either 11th or 12th edition online -- Yay!

Ophthalmology review

I purchased this book looking for something a little more comprehensive than the Massachussets Manual or in fact any of the other small manuals, which are somewhat boring for the general practitioner since they consist mostly of lists. After reading through a few chapters, specifically vascular retinopathies, I've found this book to be very effective in explaining the pathophysiology of diseases, thus helping to better understand the clinical presentation and treatment strategies, something that the smaller manuals lack. The book comes along with great pictures, though the Kanksi pictures are a tad bit more varied and representative in my opinion, but compared to the Kanski I prefer the comprehensive explanations and evidence-based medicine presented in the Yanoff. All in all I think this book greatly complements the Kanski and is a great way for medical students/residents/specialists to understand in some depth the different diseases of the eye.

Good choice, but some flaws

I'm a second-year resident in ophthalmology. I wanted to get this book since it's been around for some 10 years now and it has good references. And the truth is, it is a nice one, full of clinical images and tables, streamlined format, color-coded for convenience, up-to-date with some of the newest therapies and backed up on the newest research, well explained surgical procedures, easy to read to the point that it covers only the most relevant information, and great for the busy life and often limited study time of the resident; I definetily use it as a starting point for reviewing any given topic, but please note, ONLY as a starting point, since it is not as thorough as one might need, and this is especially true for oculoplastics. The bottom line is that I recommend this book for fast and accurate gathering of general information, previos to a more detailed review on more robust texts, or to efficiently reinforce essentials on previuosly acquired knowledge. Hope this helps.

Years later, in the late 60s, still deeply wounded by his dismissal, Dantine follows Disney's trail to capture what makes Walt tick. Dantine wants us to grasp what it is like to live and breathe around the man who thought of himself as more famous than Santa Claus. Walt's wife Lillian, his confidante and perhaps his mistress Hazel, his brother Roy, his children Diane and Sharon, his close and ill-treated collaborators, and famous figures such as Peter Ustinov, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, and Geraldine Chaplin, all contribute to the novel's animation, its feel for the life of the Disney world.

This deeply researched work not only provides interesting interpretations of what made Walt Disney a central figure in American popular culture, but also explores the complex expectations of gifted European immigrants who came to the United States after World War II with preconceived notions of how to achieve the American dream.

Peter Stephan Jungk

Peter Stephan Jungk was born in Los Angeles, raised in several European cities, and now lives in Paris. A former screenwriting fellow of the American Film Institute, he is the author of eight books, including the acclaimed biography Franz Werfel: A Life from Prague to Hollywood (1990) and the novels Tigor (Handsel Books, 2004), a finalist for the British Foreign Book Award, and The Perfect American (Handsel Books, 2004), a fictional biography of Walt Disney's last months, which had its premiere as an opera by Philip Glass at Madrid's Teatro Real in January 2013.

Michael Hofmann has translated Bertolt Brecht, Joseph Roth, Patrick S, Herta Mueller, and Franz Kafka. He won the Translators' Association's Schlegel-Tieck Prize twice in 1988 for his adaptation of The Double Bass by Patrick S (1987), and in 1993 for his rendering of Wolfgang Koeppen's Death in Rome (1992). In 1999 he won the PEN/Book of the Month Club Translation Prize for The String of Pearls. His translation of his father's novel The Film Explainer, by Gert Hofmann, won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 1995. He has written and translated more than 35 books, winning eight awards for his translations and his poetry.

True to Life

I was surprised to read the negative reviews of this book because although I never met Disney I have several friends who worked closely with him in the planning and development of both the Anaheim and Orlando theme parks, and their accounts of working with Walt match very closely with the portrait in Jungk's novel. According to my friends, and Jungk's protagonist mentions this many times, Disney had an uncanny ability to bring out the best from his creative teams - and each member of those teams felt that he had done the best work of his life while working for Walt. They also shared his passion for the theme parks and described how Walt would often wander around Anaheim, grinning happily after several whiskies, enjoying the crowds and signing his autograph which indeed was nothing like the graphic designer 'official' signature. They also mention his irrational dislike of facial hair and his dictate that the summer band leader (who for the rest of the year had a moustache) must shave - even though the band leader was a man in his fifties. Walt ordered a moose head to be hung in the executive dining room which could talk unexpectedly - thus causing considerable delight to his guests - but also had installed a recording system in the same room to eavesdrop on his executives and guests. Walt Disney was a complex genius, with flaws and foibles that are part of the entire man and I think that Jungk's book is a legitimate portrait of a part of his life. It's also a very well-written book with a unique perspective and I recommend it highly.

Sloppy

After reading just the first few pages of this book, all I can say is sloppy! "Walt" compares himself to a Weeble toy, but they were not introduced until 1971, years after his death. The room next to his office, where he would spend time with Hazel George at the end of his work day is refered to as his "laughing room," when in fact, it was his "laughing place," a reference to the film "Song of the South." Whether these mistakes are the writer's or translater's fault is hard to clarify, but for a person whose life was as well-documented as Walt Disney's, these sort of errors are inexcusable, even in a work of ostensible fiction.

An invaluable textbook

For anyone who's at Postgrad or Postdoc level, this book is an invaluable addition to your library. Undergraduates may struggle with some of it, but I'm sure that any bright student could pick it up because it's written in clear, concise language. My only gripe is that the production quality of this paperback isn't what it should be for the money & I really wish I had bought the hardback version.
