Useful information

This book is perfect for those members of the church body who want to help but aren't sure where to begin. It's also perfect for pastors who want to teach on spiritual gifting, and also encourage church members to exercise their spiritual gifts with benefit to the church.
Wagner's writing is succinct, humorous, and clear. This book sheds light not only on different spiritual gifts, but theories surrounding them (the book draws from several lists in the Bible, none of which completely mention every spiritual gift), common misconceptions, as well as a test in the back of the book to help each person begin to get a sense of what his or her spiritual gifts might be.
The book is geared toward using spiritual gifts to help the church grow, and therefore focuses on some spiritual gifts more than others (to my disappointment, the ones barely touched upon seemed more relevant to me than the ones greatly expounded upon -- ah well, another book perhaps). I appreciated Wagner's candor and openness to other scholar's theories about spiritual giftings, as well as his standpoints on misuses of spiritual gifts.
This book is highly recommended as a place to begin your studies on spiritual giftings, especially in the context of gifts within the church body.

A Great Help For Church Leaders

Having taught many seminars over the past seven years on Spiritual Gifts and having helped hundreds of people to find thier unique call to ministry through their giftedness, I found this little book to be a treasure of information. It succinctly describes the value of helping church members discover thier gifts and function out of them, leading to fulfilling and enthusiastic service for the Kingdom of God. Church leaders who have read this book in our setting have stopped looking for just "warm breathing bodies" to fill a position, but instead look for a person whose giftedness qualifies them for it and therefore classic burn-out is kept at a minnimum. Peter Wagner is easy to read and speaks clearly to the lay person.

I don't think they could pack much more info into one book. It has refernces and shows how the author backs up his information. If you have people willing to really make thier church grow this book will help.

A tragic, but beautiful novel, based on a true account

When Wold War II breaks out no one is rescuing the children of the orphanage in Rangoon, Burma. The 62 Anglo-Burmese children aren't wanted by the British nor by the Burmese, so they are left with their teacher, Grace Collins, while the others flee.
As the threat of the Japanese grows stronger, Grace decides to deliver the children to the safety of India herself. Their journey starts in an old school bus, but soon they end up in the jungle with nothing left and no help from others.
Just as Grace starts despairing a group of elephants and men appear. They are willing to take the orphans to India. But will they make it?

I love reading historical novels and one of my favourite subjects is WWII. Not just the ordinary soldier stories, but the more special ones, about people and what they do to survive, so it's logical I was immediately attracted to this novel.

And I wasn't disappointed. I loved Grace and the way she tried to save the children. It was also nice to read about the children, but I had the feeling that Sweeney only `knows' a few of them. About five children are actively taking part in the story, but the others aren't mentioned once, not even a name. They are always addressed as `the children' of `the group'.

The elephant men are fantastic. They give you such a warm feeling! I would like to have seen them for real. It's such an unreal situation, but in fact it's based on a true account, but unfortunately one that didn't end well.

Of course I can't image what it would have been like if I were there, but this novel gives you an idea of the jungle, its secrets and the fear you have if someone is chasing you down.
If you are looking for a road (or better an elephant) novel, then this is what you should read!

The first chapters are exceptionally well crafted, depicting the situation of the main character and her environment in both a sensitive and humorous way. I thought in turns of Graham Greene and John Le Carr�, or even "African Queen" (the novel). There were later shifts in point of view which felt a bit clumsy, a saccharine romance � la "English Patient" and a vaudeville villain whose subplot I thought added only an embarrassment of grit to a situation already fraught with tension. I mean, if you are trying to escape the advancing Japanese army with a convoy of orphans through a hostile jungle, you have action enough without needing to pick Jack the Ripper on the way

This textbook is therefore very timely and integrates a review of bone biology with the genetics of bone and joint disorders, parathyroid and related disorders, and vitamin D and renal diseases. The section on osteoporosis genes identified by genome-wide association studies is particularly useful and effectively summarises a subset of the at least 56 loci that have shown a robust association with BMD at genome-wide significant level and have been replicated. Although these genes explain only about 4% of the variation in BMD and cannot be used to improve fracture risk prediction, they have pinpointed many factors in critical molecular pathways in bone that provide promising candidates for novel therapeutic interventions. The section on genetic disorders of vitamin D synthesis and action elegantly shows how the study of affected children with 1a-hydroxylase deficiency and hereditary vitamin D resistant rickets continues to provide a more complete understanding of the biological role of 1,25(OH)2D in vivo. Readable and practical

While the title may suggest that the book promotes a narrow way of thinking, the opposite is true. Standish has written a compelling book that is designed to help any Christian, regardless of denomination, seek and find a balance in his/her faith life. Following the narrow path means rejecting extremism while trusting God to lead us. How we practice our faith is not a matter of being "right," Standish observes. The various divisions within Christendom have come as people have tried to find a different path, one that integrates experiences,forms of worship, or understanding of God that have been largely missing. There are actually a number of paths that can be taken; the question is what is the right one for you. Further, we need to be willing to explore other paths to add balance and completeness to our spiritual lives.
One of the ways we need balance is in how we experience God; rather than focusing solely on God the Creator (as Eternal Presence, source of morality, ethics, truth, and law), or on Jesus (as the Incarnated Presence), or the Holy Spirit (as the Inspiring Power), we need to walk a Trinitarian Path and relate to God in all three ways. Another way to add balance is through integration of theology (the intellectual aspect), religion (church participation), and spirituality (forming a love relationship with God). Too often we ignore one or more of these. Other paths include the Healing Path, the Servant Path, the Mystical Path. In these and other areas Standish provides a clarity of vision and a fresh approach that will help individuals, alone or in groups, enlarge their vision and discover the narrow path of faith so that they can discover and experience God more fully. This book is a gem.

Discovering the Narrow Path

Graham Standish has written a very spiritual book. It covers much ground in eight chapters, which provides many opportunities to reflect on the content and to answer five questions posed which challenge you to put the impact of the chapter on you personally and how it fits into your own unique pattern of belief.

There are also opportunities for the book to be used in small group or larger settings, it would be ideal as a learning tool for a Lent or other course.

The group leader is provided with materials to use for each session and I believe it would be a rewarding activity, which would enable those participating to grow and to develop as Christians.

Excellent book

This is an excellent book. It is for beginners and that is exactly what I am. The photographs are in bright full color and take you step by step through the tying of the fly. There are a lot of fly tying books out there and I have looked through dozens and dozens of them. Not one of them came close to being as good as this book.

The wire o' binding that lets the book lie flat is just an added bonus.

Not bad, but ...

There are some truly great things to say about Mr. Gathercole's book, "Fly Tying for Beginners." First, it is laid out in a very sensible manner. Starting with tools and techniques up front, followed by a list of flies, all in awesome crystal-clear color photos. The book's size and wire wound binding makes it so easy to use on at the tying bench.

That said, as a novice to fly tying, I found myself going to other resources to research techniques such as tying hair wings. In addition, it would have been MORE helpful (for me) if some of the techniques I needed to use were found in the same pages as the fly I was tying at that time. One other point is that I found myself having to guess several times on tail lengths, hackle sizes,and occasionally material placement.

Overall, I'm very glad to have this book as a reference, but I'm also glad I have OTHER references to assist me with the gaps of information I found missing in this one.

A great first fly tying book

This is one of the best three fly tying books I've found for beginners. I can't say I've been tying flies for a long time - I'm clearly in the beginner category. However, I've been writing documentation for a living and teaching how to design instructional materials at a university so I tend to be picky about these kinds of "starting guides." This book has a great deal to recommend it for beginners.

The beginning portion of the book is devoted to a comprehensive section dealing with the basic fly tying skills and each of the individual fly "recipes" refers back to those relevant skills by page number. Pretty handy.

The photographs are clear, relevant and in color. You would think that color wouldn't make a difference but in fly tying it does. So much of the material is colored that selecting and using the right one is far easier when the images are in accurate color.

The step by step instructions are simple and concise. Boy, does that make a difference when you're looking back and forth between the book several times when you're first starting.

It uses a spiral wire binder which means it lays open to the page you're working on without your having to use soda and beer cans as paper weights. This is a bonus because none of the flies I've found so far recommend adding a sugar coating to the feathers.

Finally, the book not only includes a list of materials needed for each fly, making trips to the fly store for materials easier, but it also includes in the description the kind of fish that fly is good for. Again, this is a handy bonus for beginners. I want to tie flies I'll use for particular fish and tend to stay away from those that won't be useful to me.

My only disappointment is a minor one. It doesn't include instructions on using the Matarelli whip finisher but that's something I can live without.

All in all, a great book for those just starting out in fly tying.

Great book for new teachers

I purchased this book as a new piano teacher. It is very well organized and thorough, even covering topics such as composition styles through the years and teaching handicapped students. I recommend it to any piano teacher who is looking for a good reference book and guide.

Very very useful

Not only does this book cover technical aspects of piano playing and is straight forward and easy to read, but it also prepares prospective teachers for real-life challenges such as how to teach handicapped students and students who are determined but have very little confidence, among those other psychologically extra-demanding teaching situations. It equips piano educators with knowledge that they don't teach you in music school and I'd recommend it to anyone who is seriously considering teaching.

This is a most concise yet comprehensive reference book. So much information in one place! I've been teaching piano for over 30 years and still found every section filled with useful information and approaches to use with my students. I highly recommend it for piano teachers, both new and experienced.

It's nice to have Gerald Tarrant back!

C. S. Friedman confided that she had had an idea for a new Gerald Tarrant story when she agreed to contribute to Speculative Horizons, the anthology I compiled and edited for Subterranean Press last year. I was foaming at the mouth at the very thought, yet I knew that we could never afford to have that story in our anthology. In any event, she wanted to complete Legacy of Kings before tackling that new project.

And then, a few weeks ago, she let me know that the novella was done, edited, and she wanted to know if I wanted to be the first one to review it? Are you kidding me!?! "Hell yeah!" I said! And it was quite a treat, if only for 31 pages, to return to the world of the Coldfire trilogy and rediscover one of my favorite fantasy characters of all time!

It's been sixteen years since we last encountered Gerald Tarrant. Far too long for most Friedman fans around the world, I'm sure. But when asked about the possibility of additional short stories or novellas featuring that beloved protagonist, C. S. Friedman told me that this was a one-off. Unless other memorable and worthwhile ideas come to mind, there won't be more of them coming up. Which, as a matter of course, made me savour Dominion even more.

This being a novella, the format precluded too much depth in terms of worldbuilding. Still, Friedman sets the mood perfectly. The narrative grabs hold of you and won't let go. The prose is evocative and the Forest almost becomes a character in its own right. Sure, many will claim that fans are already won over. But it's no secret that the author knows how to draw readers into her tales and Dominion is no different.

The novella features the POVs of two protagonists. The first is, not surprisingly, that of Gerald Tarrant, first Neocount of Merentha. It was a veritable pleasure to revisit a character that has made such an impact on me during the 90s. Although the thirty pages or so don't provide enough of an opportunity to fully appreciate this chance to see Gerald Tarrant in action and witness events unfold through his eyes, I relished every single moment of it. And damn it, I want more! The second is that of Faith, last survivor of a band of knights of the Church hunting faeborn creatures in the Forest. She possesses a special gift known as the Earth's blessing; the fae does not respond to her. Both characters find themselves in the heart of the Forest; one trying to escape, while the other means to best it. I think Friedman created a good balance between the two POV sections throughout the novella.

The relatively short format means that there is not a dull moment from start to finish. Indeed, all too soon you come to the end, satisfied but begging for more. Considering Gerald Tarrant's complex past, one would think that there would be material for several prequels. And here's to hoping that Dominion will be the first of many short form works featuring him.

This novella is a small vignette of Gerald Tarrant's life prior to the Coldfire trilogy, one focusing on his conquest of the Forest. I enjoyed how the author introduced Amoril and how he became part of Tarrant's entourage.

All in all, Dominion is a fantastic read. If you are a C. S. Friedman fan and loved the Coldfire trilogy, this novella is definitely for you!

Entertaining prequel short story

Dominion is a novella by celebrated SFF writer Celia S. Friedman, it is a prequel to her seminal work that is "The Coldfire trilogy". The first book "Black Sun Rising" was released in 1991 and captured the interest and fascination of readers worldwide with its curious mix of science fiction and fantasy. Two sequels followed at a biennial rate and the author closed of the trilogy and the story of eclectic bunch of characters found within. I haven't read the trilogy but that is more due to laziness on my part rather than anything else. Also since this novella was a prequel, I thought of it as a perfect opportunity to begin my exploration of this evocative work.

The story has two protagonists namely Gerald Tarrant and Faith, the former is the first of a kind among mages, the latter the ultimate survivor of a hunting Knight force. They are polar opposites and are both drawn to a certain special forest that will test their fortitude. Gerald is drawn to it for the sole reason that it raises his curiosity by being a font of fae energy, which might have sentience. Faith on the other hand, doesn't have an exact clue about how she has landed there. Death however stalks both of them and one misstep will be all that it takes for the forest to claim dominion over both of them.

What is so good about this novella is that even though it is on the shorter side in matters of length, it does not waste any extra space in immersing the reader in the dark world of Erna. The setting and background information is quickly given to the reader without making it all to obvious and at the same time is the introduction of the dual POV threads which fuel the story. The pace of the plot is of the express kind but it does not hamper the characterization in any way, which just shows the proficient prose utilized. Another point about the characterization is that readers will be thoroughly invested in both characters and of course it's almost impossible not to be enamored by the Neocount whose actions, intellect & power are visible only as the tip of the iceberg. I know who the readers will most likely be rooting to achieve dominion (as was I) and that is another highlight for the novella to entrance the reader in such a small timeframe.

The novella is structured in such a way that its not hard to guess where it will end up but here's the beauty you can't exactly predict how it will end for both the protagonists (Obviously veteran fans of the Coldfire trilogy will know more about the fate of one of the POV characters). The twist in the end as well as the origin story of another character in the middle will be very much appreciated by pervious fans as I'm lead to believe that both plot twists are pivotal for certain events in the future trilogy. Overall this novella stands out for making it easy for fans & non-fans to get acquainted with it easily, with out losing out on the surprise factor that is often the downfall seen in most prequels due to the nature of the stories. I don't think I have any feedback of the dissenting kind for this story as it simply caught me off guard with its sheer excellence and it shames me to say that I haven't yet read the Coldfire trilogy in spite of owning all the three books.

CONCLUSION: C.S Friedman's Dominion is nothing short of a brilliant way to get new readers exposed to her seminal trilogy and other works. Do yourself a favor and read this novella if you are looking for dark fantasy and a protagonist who is quite simply the perfect embodiment of an antihero. Dominion is a must read for all fans of the darker turn of the fictional worlds, so go meet the Neocount and be prepared to amazed.

The title says it all

Dominion is the perfect title for this prequel novella to C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. It fills in some of the holes in Tarrant's missing past between his initial fall from grace to the fateful meeting with the Reverend Vryce. It is a short story, so it is very focused on the pull of the Forest and Tarrant's battle to dominate that dark power and make it his own. It is told from two completely different points of view, thus giving the reader an immersive perspective of just how dangerous, and beautiful, the Forest is.

The novella does have its drawbacks. As other reviews mentioned, it is a very short read. It leaves you with even more questions and more holes to fill. An unfamiliar character is introduced, endowed with a special ability not mentioned (that I remember) in the trilogy, who is in the end discarded - nothing more than a messenger of Tarrant's ominous declaration. What happens to her, and more importantly, her ability? Another drawback is the ultimate showdown between Tarrant and the Forest. With the goal of domination over such a strong force, one would expect a battle of epic proportions. This is not the case. Like the story itself, it is short, sweet, and to the point as to be almost anticlimactic. I said almost.

Friedman is no lightweight when it comes to writing. Despite the story's brevity, it is a well-written work that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. Tarrant is the character you love to hate, and anyone with an interest in the Coldfire trilogy will enjoy learning more about this devil incarnate. We can only hope that Friedman will not leave the fans of Erna hanging for too long with more stories of this strange and wonderful place she has created.

Imagine Charles Dickens living in Arizona/Utah/New Mexico in the late 20th century and this is the type of book he might have written.

Very unique storytelling with a family built around Mormons and polygamy presents a totally unforgettable cast of characters, The father going through a mid-life crisis and his anarchic family set up (wives and children) evolving (and dying) around him is story telling of the highest order captured on this audio book brilliantly.

Highly recommended (as is the predecessor book "The miracle life of Edgar Mint"!
