In the campaign on Chartres in Bolo! (2005), Trevor Manecka of the Dinochrome Brigade lost her Bolo, Benjy. She is now going into action again, teamed with a venerable veteran Bolo, Lazarus. Their mission is to plant Concordat colonies where the Melchonian empire is unlikely to find them. Unfortunately, the "Puppies" (i.e., the aliens of Melchonia) have both natural and military intelligence--and the persistence to follow the colonizing expedition across the light-years. The result is a deadly, prolonged battle, recounted with all Weber's customary high-tech vividness, but this time Trevor is not separated from her Bolo or even from her human lover, Edmund Hawthorne. Also convincingly depicted is the process of downloading a human personality into a Bolo, which confers immortality of a sort and gives the novel a warmer tone than the battle scenes, unaided, would have. Terrific novel...

Captain Maneka Trevor, of the Dinochrome Brigade, is one of the few to have survived the horrible battle on the planet Chartres. Though still active military, she carries guilt of surviving when her Bolo "Benjy" and the others in her brigade did not. Maneka is surprised to find herself before Rear Admiral Sedgewood until she learns why she was summoned. Maneka has been chosen to be part of a special mission called "Operation Seed Corn". The Melconian Empire is winning the war. The Humans are losing. Those chosen for this special mission are to travel far away, find a new habitual planet, and begin a new human colony.
Commodore Lakshmaniah was to be in charge. However, when the Puppies arrive she and her people go out to meet them head on, in hopes of keeping them away from the transports and industrial ships. They mostly succeed. Both teams seem to wipe each other out. Yet some of the "Seed Corn" convoy is also destroyed. Maneka and Lazarus, the Bolo who is assigned to her and was also at Chartres, are now in charge. Commodore Lakshmaniah, before her death, had believed there was at least one Puppy ship under stealth somewhere. Though Maneka prays the info is incorrect, she takes all precautions. (The reader knows from the beginning that Lakshmaniah's info IS correct. The stealth ship shadows the convoy until, over a year later, a new planet is found by the Humans.)
The new planet is named "Indrani". As the humans settle in, the Melconians prepare to attack. They intend to wipe out the human race and take the human's higher tech equipment as their own. Only two Bolos stand in the way of the overwhelming number of Melconian troops.
**** This is David Weber's second Bolo novel. The first is compiled out of several stories, like an anthology where the stories all link together eventually. This novel, however, is one long story. The author, David Weber, is famous for having complex tactical strategies in his works. This book is no different. The readers get to see the tactical equations taken by the Humans AND the Puppies. Many of these are utterly brilliant! All-in-all, another winner for Weber. I look forward to his next release, which is to be another "Honor Harrington" novel (due out in October 2005.) Stellar reading here! ****

Better, Much better on the whole.

The books is a take off of one of the stories from David Weber's Colletion of Bolo stories entitled "BOLO!" and I found it a decent read.

Captain M is a wounded Bolo commander and would like nothing better than to have died with her Bolo... But soldiers sometimes aren't given a choice and she is sent off to defend a secret mission to establish a colony where hopefully the Dog Boys won't find it.

But unfortunately things don't go according to plan and the enemy does find them. To make a long story short, victory while costly doesn't destroy the colony... But it does give Captain M a much longer lease on life as a Bolo commander...

I found this book to a good deal better than the previous effort by Weber's Bolo! Definately a good read if you like David Weber and Bolo's!

a Bolo as the antithesis of a Beserker

For years Keith Laumer wrote Bolo stories, and now, after his death, David Weber skilfully continues the storyline. There are certainly places in this text where you can see Weber's style of writing from his Honor Harrington series.

This book could have been improved with a map of the land conflict between the humans and the Dog Boys. Think back to such classic military SF as Pournelle's Janissary series, or Stirling's General books. Both series came with simple maps that greatly helped the narrative.

You may already be aware of another long running series - about Beserkers, by Fred Saberhagen. Weber's book, and the earlier Bolo stories, are a nice antithesis to the bleak universe containing Beserkers. Or to the entire idea that dates back to Frankenstein, of a machine turning against its creator. The Bolo in this book is crucial in preventing a group of humans from being wiped out. Indeed, the backdrop of the book is a larger genocidal conflict between humans and the Dog Boys, where the humans are outnumbered and losing.

While there are some logical discontinuities between this story and earlier Bolo tales, some readers will surely wish that Weber writes more in this setting.

(Matt 13:10, 13) Moreover, in union with the divine, Our Saviour was able to reveal sacred knowledge that had never been previously presented in the entire history of mankind: "I will explain mysteries hidden since the creation of the world" (Matt 13:35). This sacred and revealed knowledge has been termed "Christ-mysteries" or "mysteries of the Son." After his glorious resurrection and ascension, Christ-Jesus institutionalized his two-fold mystery-teachings through St. Peter and St. John (the Evangelist, not the apostle). Through St. Peter, Our Saviour instituted a universal, Christian religion and theology to preserve, promote and convey the more basic and simplified mystery-teachings that are intended for the general public. Through St. John, Christ-Jesus instituted a universal, Christian philosophy and theosophy to preserve, promote and convey the more comprehensive and complex mystery-teachings that are intended for the more advanced disciples (Christian initiates). In esoteric terminology, the institutionalized teachings through St. Peter are known as the "lesser mysteries of exoteric Christianity." About the Author
Having been born in 1950, Ron MacFarlane’s Presbyterian family background was enormously deepened and expanded in his formative teenage years by the influx of exotic Eastern mysticism into Western society during the “Psychedelic Sixties.” But it was during his twenty-first year that several profound spiritual experiences would shape his relationship with Jesus Christ for the rest of his life. During that time, he experienced a blinding encounter with the Risen Saviour (similar to St. Paul) as well as the transcendent experience of “Christ-consciousness” on the other side of the threshold. Moreover, a supersensory calling from Christian Rosenkreutz and a later physical encounter with a mysterious emissary would eventually direct Ron’s attention to Rudolf Steiner and to anthroposophy. Consequently, Ron has been a dedicated Rosicrucian student and a strong supporter of anthroposophy for over thirty-five years. This deep and abiding interest in esoteric Christianity has been harmoniously complemented since 2006 by an equally deep devotion to the Church of St. Peter. This conversion to the Catholic Faith was the result of an inner directive from Our Saviour during the previous Christmas season. Ron is happily retired from a professional career as a high school art teacher and currently lives in Mission BC, Canada, with his loving wife Anne Marie, close to their four adult daughters and three grandchildren.

A great companion to classroom text

This book seems to get a bad rap(wrap?) on sites so I felt I should do a review of it. I bought it as a companion to physics for scientists and engineers. Physics for scientists and engineers is very technical and can get very boring fast; EZ physics progressed in the same order as my text so that was very helpful. Sure, the example problems aren't anything test/quiz like, but they are good for refreshing. The text is also very simple to read and worded in a "layman's" form. All in all this book helped me get a B in calc based physics with no prior physics courses or calc courses in my life, so I'd say its decent. 4 stars because it is not perfect, if I could give it something along the lines of 4 and 1/3 stars I would.

Great All-In-One Physics Book

I bought this to use as reference while tutoring a high school students in physics. It was a great supplement to his text book (which was rather elementary in explaining topics and providing examples). His text did not have any sort of practice problems to help with the various formulas and concepts taught throughout the year. His teacher was supplementing with worksheets and problem sets that he had made on his own. This was a great resource for me to use to reteach a topic or review before a test. Unlike other workbooks, the answers for practice sets were included. This was a great all-encompassing resource for my library.

Escape to Paradise!

I have four copies of this book and have read it about six times. It's one of my favorites and a great summer beach read. It also has some really good historical information in it. I actually learned a lot from reading this book, especially about the Maya ruins at Tulum (where I have visited about five times and live a half an hour north of) and the Fresnel lens. Some of the repeating of lines from his songs can get a bit tiresome, especially if you know every song by heart as I do, but Jimmy does a great job of spinning yet another story that is part fact, part fiction, but pure FUN!

Not another Where is Joe Merchant

I am a fan of what I call Florida Fiction, fiction which is replete with charming characters who range from the perfectly scientifically pragmatic to the lunatic, semi-deranged or wigged out. The plots are usually convoluted with strange twists and weird, even supernatural, coincidences. There is almost always a high degree of opportunism, since Florida itself is based on opportunism.

Florida Fiction does not have to be set in Florida. The settings can vary, as long as there is at least one oddball but tightly-knit community, usually with one or more characters who are habitually drunk or stoned. Christopher Moore set his stories in northen climes. Terry Pratchett writes about Ankh-Morpork, a fantasy city on a fantasy world. Still, the best Florida Fiction is set in Florida or at least off the coast of Florida, and to read the best of the best, pick up any book by Carl Hiaason, Randy Wayne White, or Tim Dorsey, or read Where is Joe Merchant? by Jimmy Buffet.

I had hoped that Buffet's A Salty Piece of Land would parallel Joe Merchant in style and development, since its jacket did promise colorful and bizarre adventures, but it fell somewhat short of my expectations. Had I not read Where is Joe Merchant?, I might not have been so disappointed; but in comparison to that earlier work, A Salty Piece of Land is flat, linear, and misses the unexpected and amusing situational complexity which I had hoped for. True, there are some iconoclastic characters, but I personally could not root for them (or perhaps identify with them) as hard as I did for the protagonists and supporting cast in Merchant. They seemed more limited in dimension. Perhaps A Salty Piece of Land might be considered to be a more mature, more reflective work than Merchant, but, to me, at least, it simply was not as much fun. A reasonably good book, mind you, but not up to Buffet's capabilities.

I love this book. I have been waiting for Jimmy Buffet to write another book since "Where is Joe Merchant" and "A Pirate looks at Fifty". I do truly enjoy his writing style. Some peole have downgraded this book because it is written different then pretty much every book you were made to read in school, they down graded this book because the author probablly broke some sacred writting rule that authors and Lit teachers are suppose to always obsereve. Well, I didn't much care for the books we were made to read in high school. This book is different. It just flows along leading you into a different adventure each chapter, it is all the same story about the main character you just learn all about all the other characters. All of Buffets books have made me want to just get a boat and float away to see where the current will take me. Buffet's writing just has a way of getting you there for the adventure and you are sad when it is over. Jimmy, if you ever have to stop singing you certanily could write books full time and I would read every one of them.

Excellent book is marred by excessive profanity and wittiness

Marsh has a lot to say about what UX is and how to do it. The organization of the book into cohesive lessons is sound. There's much more value here than the "for beginners" tag in title might lead you to believe, and readers will find much to reference as they build their UX careers.

However, the book suffers from excessive profanity and wittiness that seems entirely at odds with good writing style and the O'Reilly brand. I won't try to reproduce Marsh's running stream of sex and porn jokes here, as they would no doubt be edited out by Amazon - as they should have been by Marsh's O'Reilly editors. As the book would appear to be targeted at students, the profanity makes even less sense. There are several moments that are borderline offensive.

As Marsh's topic is UX, it's baffling that a book with so much great content is brought down several notches by elements that could easily have been removed. In short, like a UX design that could be improved to better serve the user, Marsh's book would be much more readable without all the slang, F bombs and jokes about shopping for sex toys. All this bad language is not needed and does not serve the subject.

I hope O'Reilly in future will reconsider whether it's appropriate in a tech world already saddled with many issues of inclusion and bad behavior to add to the mess by publishing books where authors exhort readers to "suck the big one". Not really what we need.

Irreverant, concise but not for the business environment.

A good starting point for those wishing to learn UX design. Covers material in short concise manner, with an odd humor & pithy comments that surely will raise a few eyebrows. May be fine for individuals, but as another reviewer mentioned, not for the business environment.
With that being said, it does the job and teaches you a well distributed foundation in a short amount of time.

Websites are mix of content and experience. A lot of people have content, not many can bring the content in a way that draws users in and helps the content shine. Understanding user experience is a key, yet almost entirely ignored, element of website design, especially non-professional designs. Indeed, it's the user experience element that makes a site really professional. I'm an educator and involved in a few projects where site development is key. Because of this, and because I am aware that the content I work with is often overlooked, alienating, or otherwise non-intuitive, part of my goal is to learn how to draw as many people in and help them discover in the most fluid way possible. Marsh is a great help to this process, especially as I've often made a number of mistakes over the years in ignoring user experience.

This book offers a great start to the methods and issues involved, not getting very in depth at any point, but really more getting the reader to think and grow in awareness. It's not a web design book, after all, it is meant to highlight a broad range of issues and approaches that can draw in and keep users involved.

Really great for designers of all kinds and especially useful as I work on educational design, moving away from banking concepts of teaching and towards better interactivity and connection.

This book is a like a weekend seminar, giving a great deal of readily used info in bullet pointed segments, each of which can be filled out more deeply with other resources. In a lot of ways, this book functions best as an eye-opener, leading the reader to think and approach design in different ways.

It's a bit crass at times, but not overly so and not anymore than that weekend seminar might be. Marsh keeps the readers attention and occasionally uses approaches that may bother or shock some, but that (I think) is itself part of the goal.

This book really is for beginners. As a beginner myself it is getting me to think and approach discussions in new ways. In this it really is helpful for everyone connected to a site, so they can work together in asking the right questions and steering towards a more engaging experience

Getting It Up in China

Everett Zhang was conducting fieldwork in two Chinese hospitals, documenting the reasons why men sought medical help for sexual impotence, when Viagra was first introduced into China's market in 2000. He therefore had a unique perspective on what the media often referred to as the "impotence epidemic", designating both the increased social visibility of male sexual dysfunction and the growing number of patients seeking treatment in nanke (men's medicine) or urological hospital departments. At the time of Viagra's release, Pfizer, its manufacturer, envisaged a market of more than 100 million men as potential users of "Weige" (Great Brother) and hoped to turn China into its first consumer market in the world. Its sales projections were based on reasonable assumptions. The number of patients complaining from some degree of sexual impotence was clearly on the rise, reflecting demographic trends but also changing attitudes and values. There was a new openness in addressing sexual issues and a willingness by both men and women to experience sexually fulfilling lives, putting higher expectations on men's potency. Renewed attention to men's health issues since the 1980s had led to the creation of specialized units in both biomedical hospitals and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) clinics. There was no real competitor to Pfizer's Viagra, as traditional herbal medicine or folk recipes clearly had less immediate effects in enabling sexual intercourse.

And yet Viagra sold much less than expected. In hospitals and health clinics, Chinese patients were reluctant to accept a full prescription. Instead, they requested one or two single pills, as if to avoid dependence. The drug was expensively priced, and customers were unwilling to sacrifice other expenses to make room in their budget. In addition, Viagra did not substitute for traditional remedies, but rather developed in tandem with them as people switched between Viagra and herbal medicine, taking both for seemingly compelling reasons. Viagra addressed the issue of erectile dysfunction, and its bodily effects were clearly experienced by Chinese men who reacted to it in much the same way as male subjects elsewhere. But it did not bring an end to the "impotence epidemic", which continued to be framed as more than a health issue by the Chinese media. Viagra did not "cure" impotence or restored men's potency because it was unable to do so. Pfizer's projected sales figures had been based on false assumptions, and the Chinese market proved more resistant than initially envisaged.

Zhang proposes a compelling theory of why it was so, thereby demonstrating the value of a fieldwork-based anthropological study as distinct from other types of scholarly explanations. In contrast to the dominant biomedical paradigm, he rejects the notion that male potency can be reduced to the simple ability to achieve an erection. Impotence is much more than a bodily dysfunction or a "neuromuscular event": witness, as Zhang did, the despair of men who complain of having lost their "reason to live", or the frustration of women who accuse their companion of having become "less than a man". But impotence is not only a metaphor, as some cultural critics would have it. Impotence is often presented as the symbol of a masculinity in crisis or as a sign of the "end of men" and the rise of women in postsocialist China. But these generalizations do not reflect the practical experiences of impotent men, nor do they explain why the demand for more and better sex resulted in anxiety for some men, leading to impotence. "In fact, notes the author, none of the discussions surrounding Chinese masculine crises was either soundly conceptualized or empirically supported."

Zhang's fieldwork confirmed the rise of women's desire or increased people's longing to enjoy sex throughout their adult life, but did not go as far as to validate the claim of an "impotence epidemic" or to testify to a "new type of impotence". During the Maoist period, people were discouraged from seeing doctors about impotence, as sexuality was repressed and the desire for individual sexual pleasure was regarded as antithetical to the collective ethos of revolution. If anything, patients came to consultations to complain about nocturnal emissions (yijing), a complaint that more or less disappeared in the post-Maoist era. When men's health clinics or nanke departments emerged in the new era, they medicalized impotence and established it as a legitimate "disease" warranting medical attention. Private selves emerged when the overall ethos of sacrifice and asceticism gave way to the exaltation of romantic love and then to the justification of sexual desire and pleasure. But structural impediments to sexual desire did not disappear overnight, such as the physical separation of married couples and other constraints on intimacy induced by the danwei (work unit) and hukou (household registration) systems. Other biopolitical interventions created gaps between the revolutionary class and the outcast relatives of counter-revolutionaries, between the urban and the rural or, more recently, between the rich and the poor.

The main value of the book lies in its rich collection of life stories and individual cases of men and women confronted with impotence. The amount of suffering accumulated under Maoist socialism is staggering. People interviewed in the course of this research retained collective memory of starvation during the Great Leap Famine, and feeling hungry was a common experience well into the sixties. Maoist China was a man-eat-man's world, where middle-aged men would snatch food from school children or steal from food stalls to assuage their hunger. It was also a time when children would denounce their parents for counterrevolutionary behavior, or would call their mother by their given name in a show of disrespect in order to draw a clear line between themselves and bad parents. Sexual misery and backwardness also provided a common background. Some of Zhang's interlocutors never touched a woman's hand until they were thirty years old; others confessed that the first time they saw a naked female body was when they saw a Western oil painting of a female body, or when they glimpsed scenes of a classical ballet in a movie. A nineteen years-old girl didn't understand the question when the doctor asked if she had begun lijia (menstruation) and thought lijia was a foreign word. Many persons consulting for impotence confess that they never had sexual intercourse or had tried to have sex once of twice but failed. Their conviction that they were impotent was based on very limited physical contact with women or was merely a product of their imagination.

As Zhang argues convincingly, it takes two to tango; or in words borrowed from phenomenology, "in the final analysis, curing impotence means building intercorporeal intimacy." In paragraphs that could have been borrowed from Masters and Johnson, Zhang describes the various components of sexual intercorporeality: bodies need to be in contact, as in "touching, kissing, licking, rubbing, and so on"; but they also need to be in sync, geared toward one another in a process of "bodying forth"; and other sensory inputs (such as "seeing, touching, and smelling the naked female body, tasting the tongue of the female, or hearing her scream") may provide additional stimulus. Male impotence very often originates in the failure of one of these intercorporeal dimensions: lack of touching, as when the husband lies side by side to his wife, waiting to achieve an erection; ignorance of the most basic facts of life, due to the lack of sex education; and withdrawal from the sensory world that is symptomatic of a more serious loss of "potency" in life. As the author notes, with a good deal of common sense, "women's involvement in managing impotence is not any less important than men's, and, in fact, at times may be more important. Impotence, after all, is not only a neurovascular event affecting the individual male body. It is also a social, familial event and an intercorporeal, gendered event."

The Impotence Epidemic is not only ethnographically rich, it is also theoretically elaborate. Zhang received his PhD in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley, in a department known for its emphasis on social and cultural theory. One of his teachers, Paul Rabinow, initiated generations of English-speaking students to the thought of French philosopher Michel Foucault. His thesis advisor, Arthur Kleinman, who teaches medical anthropology at Harvard, recently edited a book (reviewed here) about how anthropologists engage philosophy. Zhang confesses he took classes in philosophy, including one with John Searle, who involuntarily provided him with a way to think about erection ("Now I want to raise my right arm. Look, my right arm is up.") Throughout the book, he makes frequent references to Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Merleau-Ponty, and Heidegger, as well as to Freud and Lacan.

Engaging the thought of these canonical authors can sometimes feel as intimidating as having sex for the first time. Zhang shows it doesn't have to be so. What is important is to build a rapport. Zhang graduated from his theory-heavy curriculum with a pragmatic mindset and a heavy dose of common sense. He uses what he can get from the theoretical toolbox, without forcing his erudition onto the reader. He is able to summarize complex reasoning in a few sentences, and to turn difficult words into useful tools. Sometimes only the title of a book or one single expression coined by one distinguished thinker can open up an evocative space and act as useful heuristic. Zhang refers to Deleuze and Gattari's A Thousand Plateaux to label his collection of life stories and medical cases as "one thousand bodies of impotence." Impotence is itself a kind of plateau, defined by Gregory Bateson as a force of continuous intensity without any orientation toward a culminating point or an external end. Throughout his book, Zhang provides succinct and transparent definitions of key concepts--Deleuze's assemblages, Bourdieu's habitus, Foucault's biopower, Merleau-Ponty's intercorporeality, Heidegger's being-in-the-world, etc. He then tests their validity by confronting them to his fieldwork observations, sometimes giving them a twist or new polish to make them fit with his ethnographic material. In many cases, theory is found lacking, and needs to be completed with the lessons learned from participatory observation.

Zhang's two main sources of philosophical inspiration are Deleuze and Foucault. The first allows him to think about the impotence epidemic as a positive development that signals the rise of desire; the second provides him with a method for investigating the cultivation of self in post-Maoist China. Criticizing Lacan's notion of desire as lack, Deleuze and Guattari introduce useful concepts to think about the production of desire or, as they say, "desiring production", which includes "the desire to desire". They describe the force of capitalism in terms of generating flows of production and desire, which are coded (restricted) and decoded (loosened) in a moral economy of desire. Their analysis focuses on the decoding phase that is the hallmark of capitalism, lessening restrictions on desire to create deterritorialized flows. Zhang prefers to focus on the "recoding" of flows of desire or "reterritorialization" as exemplified in the cultivation of life through an ethic of "yangsheng" which advocates preserving seminal essence. Sexual cultivation in contemporary China, like the "care of the self" in ancient Greece as studied by Foucault, is an ethical approach to coping with desire. Yangsheng involves everything from sleep to dietary regimens, bathing, one's temperament in response to changes in climate, qigong, walking, and the bedchamber arts. It is a way to regain potency over one's life. Foucault, in order to account for unreason and madness, chose to produce a history of reason in Western civilization. Similarly, studying impotence leads Zhang to delineate life's potency, a notion that goes well beyond the ability to achieve an erection.
