Temple Construction Begun 480 Years After The Exodus

The review "Well intentioned, deeply flawed" by Joseph Riley disregards Biblical testimony. The Bible states that the Exodus happened 480 years before the construction of the first temple. This places the Exodus around 1447 B.C. This is about 200 years before the time of Ramesses II.

"In the four hundred and eightieth year after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD." 1 Kings 6:1

"i. The date in 1 Kings 6:1 also gives a marking point for the Exodus. As many suppose, the reign of Solomon began in 971 b.c. and ended at 913 b.c. (the temple was begun in 967 b.c.). This means that the Exodus took place in 1447 b.c." from enduring word.com

Beautiful intriguing book

This is a fascinating book, whether you are well versed in Egyptology or just beginning to understand the importance of archeological dating and therefore the controversy. The reader comes along with writer/filmmaker Mahoney as he interviews an impressive variety of experts in the field, thinking through various viewpoints on the Arrival, Multiplication, Slavery, Judgment, Exodus and Conquest. The book itself is full of helpful intriguing photos and timelines and is appealing in its beautiful layout. The summary points at the end of each chapter are concise, helping the reader weigh points for themselves. This is a book that will start many interesting discussions, a volume to page through again and again. I found it helpful to read after seeing the movie Patterns of Evidence, allowing me to pause, reread and consider each voice at my own pace. The extensive bonus chapters and endnotes are great resources as well.

As Long As You’re Breathing, You Have Places To Go And Ways To Grow

In NO LIMITS: BLOW THE CAP OFF YOUR CAPACITY, John Maxwell presents a giant assortment of hugely encouraging ideas. Here’s the theme of this book: To really grow your capacity, you must be AWARE, DEVELOP ABILITIES, and make right CHOICES. Here’s how the author puts it: AWARENESS + ABILITY + CHOICES = CAPACITY

After just a few minutes of reading, I actually felt more optimistic. Plus, it was obvious to me that the author really wants to help the reader.

NO LIMITS is not just a “think positive” book. It’s very much an ACTION book. In fact, at the end of each chapter, are a series of questions to ponder. The idea is to apply your own situation to the “Capacity” questions—and then take action.

The author presents a list of “capacity” areas, and how best to improve them. If you’re not very creative, John has an entire chapter focused on improving creativity. Out of energy? There’s a whole chapter on that. Have trouble thinking deeply—better read the chapter on deep thinking.

Keep in mind that there is a LOT to absorb in this book. I found it best to read some of the chapters, then pause to just let the points “sink in.” When I read the book, I bounced around a lot, selecting chapters that I thought would be most helpful to me. For example, I zoomed in on the section called, “Energy Capacity—Your Ability to Push On Physically.” Here, the author suggests ways to discover what is draining your energy, and then ways to find what boosts your energy.

Another great chapter was on TALENT, and using your gifts and abilities the best you can. The author recommends forgetting the “Anything is possible” myth. “Gallup has proven with their studies on disengagement in the workplace that the anything-is-possible myth has led to many people spending years fighting uphill battles by doing what they’re not good at.”

Rather than wasting time in your weak areas, focus on what you are gifted at: “Why not figure out what your natural strengths are and develop those for the benefit of yourself and others? “

Much of NO LIMITS involves stories and anecdotes about the author and his own experiences. We hear, for example, how John got the LOWEST score in a class measuring creativity. “In 1965, I was a freshman in college. One day in my Psychology 101 class, we were tested for creativity, and when I got back the results, I was shocked to learn that I had tested at the bottom of my class.”

Well, that would have been a real ego-buster!

So all in all, I found NO LIMITS to be a fun, encouraging read. I would have liked to see concise “bullet point” at either the beginning or the end of each chapter. That would have made the read a little bit easier. The book concludes with this affirmation:

“I believe in you, and I believe in your ability to reach your capacity.”

Nicely stated!

This is the first book I read of the author and I found it very warm and landed; the content is based on the process and mastery that he himself has experienced. It is written with an excellent balance between valuable content and interesting anecdotes, which allows a fluid reading. It conveys a very consistent message, excellently well articulated, there are no words of filling but relevant information, there is no doubt that it is a talented communicator. The information made a very positive impact on me, it covers the subject masterfully from a very broad perspective towards a detailed, concise, very clear development, with valuable information.
Everything is focused on providing us with tools for the development of all our innate capacity, not only for the talents we recognize but also for the ones we do not see or even talents that we want to acquire. It expands our perspective, since our conditioning generally allows us to achieve comfortably within a reality box, but the truth is that it only represents a fraction of what we are capable of.
In the first part he provides information to help us to be aware of our capacities in the frameworks: physical-energetic, mental, emotional, social, creativity, productivity, leadership. It exposes an equation to maximize our capacity, in which we require to be aware, to develop our abilities and to execute the responsibility to make the right choices. The content is focused on the model of equipping people to help them work with their strengths. It then gives us valuable information to determine our "How", and focusing on each area to develop and take action, is how we break the limits of our ability. It is then that he explains to us in detail ten key areas, where through realizing life choices we expand our capacity, and to further expansion greater success in our lives.

Despite his ambitions to make good—he's also in night school and working an above-board demolition job—Julio is wary of the gradual gentrification of his beloved neighborhood, which takes a personal turn when white girl Helen moves in downstairs. Her swings from condescension to belligerence are rather jarring (and not entirely credible), but Julio falls for her and embarks on a doomed relationship. Meanwhile, his old friend Maritza is running a church on the ground floor of his building, which she uses as a front for anti-AIDS crusading and shady immigration dealings. Erratic plotting jolts the reader from one neighborhood drama to the next, as Julio wrestles with questions of identity and ethics. But when he's blackmailed by his boss into doing one last arson job, a plot twist lets him (and Qui�onez) take the easy way out. Qui�onez has a comfortable familiarity with his turf and the catchy Spanglish most of his characters speak, but he tackles too much in this sometimes preachy, sketchy novel.

Better than his first novel, but...

There is something simultaneously appealing and frustrating about Ernesto Quinonez's second novel, a marked improvement over his highly-flawed debut, Bodega Dreams, but in the end, still something of a disappointment. This time, the problem lies in his biting off more than he can chew with too many subplots rolling around what is essentially one man's coming-of-age story at its heart.

He's inexplicably combined the systematic burning of Spanish Harlem, insurance fraud, organized crime, gentrification, Santeria, pseudo-socialism, illegal citizenship papers, a shady government agent and a few other random nuggets into a muddle-headed plot that rests precariously, and unsuccessfully, on a straight-out-of-Hollywood interracial romance...and frankly, he's just not up to the task. When the cliches aren't jumping off the page at the reader, the heavy-handed didacticism is smacking them in the face.

His protagonist, Julio Santana, is a philosophizing arsonist yearning for the old days while trying to turn his life around after the proverbial "last job." Almost every other character is either an archetype or a stereotype, none ever fully coming to life beyond the "issue" Quinonez has chosen them to represent. After some hit-or-miss character and plot 'development' in the first two-thirds of the book, the hasty climax gets sloppy and, just like in Bodega Dreams, includes an out-of-left-field occurrence to wrap things up. The too-convenient epilogue only makes matters worse.

That said, Quinonez is no hack and with a less ambitious plot that focused more on the characters he obviously had a connection to, especially the engaging babalawo Papelito, he could have had something really special here. Personally, I could see a viable sequel springing from this effort, focusing only on Julio's journey to his Asiento, his strained relationship with his parents and a fleshed-out romance with Helen and the issues that arise from it. The first two things represent the strongest aspects of Chango's Fire, while the latter's potential got buried in melodrama.

Another new author to keep track of

Good opening on the subject of arson in the Puerto Rican 'hood in simple style fitting the Puerto Rican narrator, Julio. About two thirds through it seemed to get tangled and the writing style seemed to me uneven and choppy - I was thinking of downrating to 3 stars. However, the author pulled everything back together for a nice ending and the rating went back up. Except for that section, which seemed to need more editing, it is basically a well-written socialogical novel with interesting array of characters: atheist woman do-gooder preacher, retarded friend, loving ex-musician father and firey funny mother, naive perky white girlfriend, undercover INS agent, homosexual voodoo priest/hero, etc. All in all, quite entertaining, but not a comedy - serious stuff. Interesting information about slum clearance by arson (everyone benefits except the insurance company stock holders and the tenents), and about the little known religion of Santeria ("way of the Saints"). I liked it well enough to think about reading his first book, Bodega Dreams, and definitely will keep a lookout for Mr. Quinonez' next novel.

Great Book!

I purchased the book for a Latin Literature class I am currently taking, it was an assigned book. The book is an easy read (I thought a little too simple for the class I am in) but, it really brings to life the community that Spanish Harlem was and is currently changing to. My family migrated to Spanish Harlem in the 40s and we all have lived here since than and Quinonez's depiction is pretty spot on. I am an instant fan and plan on picking up his other book, Bodega Dreams once all my reading is done for the semester.

I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT A 10!

I have bought many books about progressions and quite frankly was tired of all the flufh that really told me nothing or reading 150 pages before I got a phrase of insight. NOT THIS BOOK!!
In this book you get served a healthy dose of REALISM that seems long forgotten in todays astrology. Thank God for Sophia Mason and her book because look under the moon and all important aspects it makes and there you have it. If you need to look at outer planet aspects, there you have it too. Right to the point and if you are tired of hearing about what your soul is doing in the afterlife when I need to know more if tomorrow I will be unemployed, then this is the book your looking for.

In depth book about progressed charts!

Well written by the late Sophia Mason. My only problem with this book is that she repeatedly makes the comment about attracting the "opposite sex". There are plenty of people who have no desire to attract the opposite sex and so that is very annoying and a very out of date phrase.

It is a very complicated book, and you may need to read a sentence or two over again in order to keep up with her thought process. Its amazingly complex and through! If you want through and in depth, this is it! Not at all light reading. This is a serious book for people who really want serious, in depth answers and aren't satisfied with superficial descriptions, rather who want to delve into the complexities and the interwoven fabric of astrology. Another superb book is "Predictive Astrology", it does not deal exclusively with progressed charts, as this book does.

About the Author
Barbara Perkins is Adjunct Professor of English at the University of Toledo and Associate Editor of Narrative. Since its founding, she has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at Baldwin-Wallace College, The University of Pennsylvania, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Newcastle, Australia. She has contributed essays to several reference works including CONTEMPORARY NOVELISTS, GREAT WRITERS OF THE ENLGISH LANGUAGE, and THE WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA. Her books include CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN LITERATURE (with George Perkins), BENET'S READER'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN LITERATURE (with George Perkins and Phillip Leininger), KALEIDOSCIPE: Stories Of the American Experience (with George Perkins), WOMEN'S WORK: An Anthology of American Literature (with George Perkins and Robyn Warhol) and THE AMERICAN TRADITION IN LITERATURE, 9th edition (with George Perkins).

Cheaper than 12th edition

This book was an excellent substitution for the 12th edition of the same title. The class I was in "required" 12th edition and I bought this one by mistake--no mistake! I saved money and it didn't effect my ability to complete the class. The subtle differences between the two editions isn't worth the price difference.

Paul Reid is an award-winning journalist. In late 2003 his friend, William Manchester, in failing health, asked Paul to complete The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm. He lives in North Carolina.

Heavy Hardbacks bound in glue? Not worth half the price!

The content is top drawer for sure, but, for the price and weight of these heavy hardbacks one would expect they would not only be bound in stitches, but would have to be stitched out of necessity. They are not. These volumes have been bound in glue, not stitches. If they get too cold and are opened too soon they will crack. As they dry out (and they will) the spines will split and break. Pages will eventually fall out. If these books are studied and actually worked with, they will in short time, just fall apart. How many times have we found an excellent work such as this, that has been rendered difficult to handle and read with actual pages missing? And the creators of this obsolescence have the audacity to call it " perfect binding "! If this boxed set would be properly bound I would give 5 stars as the content is very well researched and written.

A Work of Art!

I read all three volumes between 9 February and 23 March, 2013 on my commute to and from the office daily. The three volume set is not a collection of books, words, or stories. It is a painting, an artistic account of the most important Politician and Statesman of the 20th century. The painting within these pages flows and weaves with the song of history, historical significance, humor, sadness, and laughter. The first two volumes I read went by faster than I had hoped. Once picking up the first book and reading the preamble then prologue provided the "setting" of the world in England as one little Winston S. Churchill would be born on 1874. The second volume I realized was finished much too soon - I simply could not put this book down. Periodically I was reading some MLB baseball MVP stories - I did this to hold fast those pages within "Last Lion" of information for pure rentive ability. I simply could not put either one of the three books down once I started. If you love detail this series is for you.

Any person interested in Churchill should read this series. Paul Reid did an excellent job with Volume III and I believe that William Manchester would be very proud of Mr. Reid's effort.

I would recommend that readers that have not before read anything by William R. Manchester that you consider reading "Goodbye Darkness" first, then maybe (time permitting and your schedule) "American Caesar: The Life of General Douglas MacArthur - 1880 to 1964". Reading these other books will give you a great introduction to William Manchester's writing style; we lost a legend when he passed away.

Outstanding Churchill biography

Extremely well written account of the life of Winston Churchill. The author doesn't fawn over Churchill; instead he points out the man's numerous faults and puts them in the context of the time. As an admitted Anglophile I relished the in depth history of England and the changes it went through during Churchill's lifetime. I can highly recommend this biography of a man both of and beyond his time.
