New to Quicken

For someone who is new to quicken this book is a good starting point. The downside of the book is that it is probably a derivative of a long series of books. With each new edition the text becomes more verbose. Undoubtedly there are many features in Quicken. The base features should be explained and then the new features will fall into the scheme of things.

I bought Quicken to track my investments. I have entered several accounts several times to get the "error" free summaries I know to be true. I still do not know how to properly enter corporate bonds. When the newcomer gets involved, the details of the process are the burden of the user. Quicken has some help, but it is even more sparse for detail.

Mac Users BEWARE!!

I was all excited about this book -- it sounded like just what I needed to learn Quicken. I started to read it and on page 10 I read: "This book covers the Windows version of Quicken. The program's development for Mac was completely separate-- and different--from the ground up. Accordingly, Quicken differs significantly on the two platforms." I was VERY disappointed. Nowhere in the Amazon description of this book does it mention that it is written for Windows users. Granted Mac users can probably get something out of it, but beware of what you are buying.

Feb 2009 update -- Quicken is coming out with a new program called Quicken Financial life for Mac in Summer 2009. I am interested in looking into this program and the accompanying manual as a solution for Mac users. I'll update this review if I end up buying it and trying it out to let you all know how it goes...

For anyone out there that uses Quicken 2006 on a daily basis (and there are many happy users out there that do), one of the biggest complaints would probably be the lack of a manual to learn all the tips and tricks of how to get the most out of their application. Thanks to this outstanding book by Bonnie Biafore those pains will no longer be felt! Of all the great books in the Pogue Press series, this book is probably one of the most useful for the simple fact that it's territory that is not covered very well when you scan the books online regarding Quicken. Ms. Biafore explains the inner workings of this application like a seasoned pro. From inputting bills and deposits to tracking finances to creating reports, 'Quicken 2006 for Starters' is a great resource for all novice Quicken users out there!!

About the Author

This is by far my favorite in the series thus far. I loved the how the characters weren't afraid to keep trying to find love even after their not-so-great experiences. The characters blended well together and it was a great story. Besides who wouldn't love a red g-string wearing rock star who would do anything to get his girl?

My Only Real Complaint? This One Was Over Way Too Soon!

Despite being a pretty quick read, SMUGGLER’S RUN is actually very good, much of which is owed to the fact that (A) it stars Han Solo; (B) it guest stars the best (and biggest) co-pilot in the Outer Rim, namely Chewbacca; and (C) it’s a web spun by no less than Greg Rucka, a guy who’s probably forgotten more about quality entertainment than most people ever learn.

Basically, what you have with SMUGGLER’S RUN is a Solo-mission set not long after the events depicted in STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, back in the time when Han was a bit more disillusioned (still) about the Rebellion than he was ever in favor of it (a problem I thought that plagued STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI, by don’t get me started on that!). Rucka’s Solo feels more like the smuggler from A NEW HOPE, a guy whose wisecracks were a bit more sparing then happened in the latter two films of the Original Trilogy. He was always ready with a blaster, this one was, and that lovable space pirate returns for much of this adventure, and it’s great to see the hotshot pilot back in top form.

If anything, I could quibble about how quickly this RUN ends. About the time it’s kicking into high gear, a reader quickly realizes there aren’t all that many pages left, and I definitely would’ve loved to have spent more time with Solo, Chewbacca, and Beck, the villainous Imperial officer who uses cybernetic enhancements to outmatch those she hunts.

And – would you expect otherwise? Any time Solo’s around, you know the bounty hunters can’t be that far off. In RUN, Rucka creates a squad that appears at times like it’s bound to take down the Falcon’s captain, and that’s only part of the magic smuggled into these pages.

Like the others YA releases that’ve hit the shelves in anticipation of THE FORCE AWAKENS, this one is bookended with an older lead character (Solo) spinning a yarn for anyone who’ll listen; and Rucka quite possibly makes the best use of that narrative device here, combining healthy parts and characters from both timeframes into the action. Still, I didn’t find it as exciting a space trip as Luke Skywalker’s THE WEAPON OF A JEDI, but it’s leaps and bounds better than Princess Leia’s MOVING TARGET, a slow-moving jaunt that offers little legitimate peril.

Fantastic Han Solo and Chewbacca story

This is just fun! It's Han Solo right after Yavin, allowing himself to be convinced to run an emergency mission for the Rebels. The characterization is top-notch and the story does a great job of showcasing the dark side of the Empire without getting too nasty -- perfect for the 5th-9th graders this story is aimed at. This is a fun read for middle schoolers and adult fans alike.

A Star Wars Adventure in its Purest Form

"Smuggler's Run" is the Star Wars equivalent to an hour of really, really good television. It's sharply paced, cleverly written, and full of all the charm and excitement that a Han and Chewbacca adventure could ever need. It starts off running and doesn't slow down until the, albeit slightly abrupt, ending, and while the story isn't anything we haven't seen before––Han and Chewie are sent to a backwater planet to extract a Rebel soldier before a ruthless Imperial can get to him––author Greg Rucka writes with such an electric style that once I started the book I couldn't put it down.

Rucka writes some of the best Han and Chewie moments I've seen from the Star Wars novels in years, and his passion for the universe he's playing is immediately apparent and undeniably infectious. Even with only 180 pages, Rucka tells a story that thrives off of its characters, and somehow manages to not only deliver an outstanding Han and Chewie escapade, but also introduce us to several new characters who I wouldn't mind seeing more of in the future.

If you're looking for a quick, purely enjoyable Star Wars action romp, then "Smuggler's Run" is just the book for you. It doesn't come packed with any substantial hints about The Force Awakens, although the story is bookended by a tantalizing peak at what Han and Chewie are up to in their moderately older age, but rather focuses on delivering a fast-paced story full of intrigue, action, and a fantastic cast of characters. It's Star Wars in its purest, and simplest, form, and is absolutely worth picking up.

Every time I have a not so good experience with a new author it is always followed up by a great experience with another new author. This was the case with my introduction to Sydney Lain. I was drawn in, my interests were not only kept but peaked by this new author's style and characterization. When I fall in like with the MCs right away it is such an enjoyable experience that I slow down while reading it, to keep the story going as long as possible. It's an added bonus knowing it is the beginning of a series. I want Roman's brother to find his mate. He seems like a really nice guy, though sometimes quick to jump to erroneous conclusions.

This first book of the Supernatural Society Mates series starts off with a mystery. What exactly happened at the vampire night club? Where do Roman and his brother live? What kind of powers do demons possess? How do demons find their mates? How do other paranormals react to demons? Why is Roman so uptight? What does he do to relax? Why is he on the paranormals' council? My favorite though is Micah. Homeless, helpless, and mute. Tough, sarcastic, and independent. Scared, lonely, and out of options. Stubborn, smart, and psychosomatic.

Paranormals abound: Elves, demons, shifters, and vampires. Unsavory characters also do: Creepy elves, sleazy drug dealers, human menaces, wolf shifters for hire. What happened at the vampire night club that could make Micah loss the ability to talk? Why are wolf shifters out hunting for him? Will his obstinance get him killed? Why won't he let his mate in? Why is he so afraid to trust Roman when all he's been shown is kindness and generosity? Who is Prince Zed? Why does Micah feel he can trust the bartender Jacob? When is running away not a good plan of action?
There's a lot going on in this first book that is left unexplained. Since I am starting this series well into it's creation I can begin the second book right away. Which I plan to do shortly...

Finally, something I haven't read before!! I love the world the author is creating here. Original take on "supes" (as I call them), and in my favorite genre, too!! I'd say I couldn't as for more in a book, but the first book has left me begging for the next one!

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.
