bad envelope

i received it all folded and i was mad, the book was new but due to the cheap envelope they sent it in, got all messed up and has a really bad mark on front. i put ten books on it to see if it fixes itself.

"For Jews, time alone does not heal; life with people does," posits Heilman, a sociologist at the City University of New York. The Jewish rituals of death and mourning, he says, "demonstrate that however much death has thrown life into disequilibrium, the Jewish response is to bring that life back to some equilibrium in a precisely timed set of steps." As the only child of Holocaust survivors, Heilman struggled all his life with a legacy of death. Five years ago, when his father died, Heilman was forced to confront death "not as... the object of an anthropologist's curiosity. Death became my father." His book crosses back and forth among personal, academic, religious and collective boundaries. Structured in two voices of the bereaved son and the social scientist the intimate, poignant narrative describing his experiences around his father's death contrasts with an objective, academic exploration of the whys and hows of traditional practices that help the mourner master the encounter with death. He concludes that the role of community in repairing morale and ensuring personal and collective continuity is paramount: "For Jews in death no less than in life, solitariness is replaced by solidarity." Heilman recognizes that his traditional approach may not resonate with everyone in today's pluralistic society, but the rhythms of death and mourning he describes reflect enough of the universal to appeal to many seeking understanding and solace.

When his father, a Holocaust survivor, died in 1996 after a long illness and a series of strokes, Heilman (Defenders of the Faith; Jewish studies, CUNY) followed the traditional rituals of Jewish mourning, from gosess and petira (for near death and the end of life) to leveiya (the funeral and its accompaniments) to yahrzeit (anniversary of a death) and finally to the perpetual remembrance of beit olam and yizkor. As he did so, he not only analyzed these traditions from a sociocultural perspective but also looked deeply into his own personal experiences and emotions (presented in boxed inserts in the text). He concludes, "However much death has thrown life into disequilibrium, the Jewish response is to bring that life back to some equilibrium in a precisely timed series of steps, during which the dead are sent on their way and the living are reintegrated into the group and the world they inhabit." Although voluminous notes are given, there is no bibliography, which would have been helpful to general readers, students, and scholars alike. Heilman was born in Germany just after World War II, the only child of concentration camp survivors; the family emigrated to the U.S. three years later. In 1996, Heilman's father died, and the author began looking for books that explained the cultural meaning behind the practices and traditions that surrounded a Jewish death. Not finding any, he wrote this, his eighth book, which describes what is particular and what is universal about the Jewish experiences of death, bereavement, mourning, and their aftermath. Heilman describes the phases of death: the moment when Jews hover between life and death, the period when the dead have not yet been laid to rest, the preparation of the body, the funeral, the 7-day period of mourning, and the nearly 12 months during which Kaddish (the memorial prayer) is recited. Comfort & Enlightenment

Prof. Heilman's book was the comfort of a wise friend when I needed it most, just after I lost my sister to cancer. As a Jew, I wanted to seek solace in my faith after this devastating loss - but, having grown up essentially unaffiliated, I did not quite know where to turn, nor what it all meant. The Jewish rituals of mourning, burial, kaddish - all were largely foreign to me. I was very fortunate to be given Prof. Heilman's book as a gift from a dear friend, and it became my guidebook through what was, for me, new and frighteningly uncharted territory. "When a Jew Dies" provides an explication of Jewish law and custom on death that is understandable to a layman, but textured enough to be of great use to an academic as well. But what I found most warming of all was Heilman's moving account of his own struggle to cope with the death of his father, after a long and nightmarish battle with the effects of a debilitating stroke. Anyone who has suffered a similar loss will find this book an invaluable companion.

This is a sensitively written book that combines the analytic view of what death, bereavement and mourning mean to Jewish tradition along with the author's personal experience with the encounter with death. For those who want to know not only what tradition demands but what the underlying sociological, psychological and anthropological meaning behind those traditions is as well as how this all affects those who practice the tradition, this book will be a useful guide. Excellent Gas Dynamics Resource

I used this book in Graduate School at Purdue in a Gas Dynamics class taught by the co-author, J.D. Hoffman. A excellent, in-depth text, that starts with the fundamentals and builds. The best and most comprehensive book on the subject I've seen.

A classic

If you don't already have Zucrow's Gas Dynamics, then perhaps you should. Excellent, lucid read. Every equation is derived, which is most helpful. Chapter 4 is especially interesting (1D isentropic flow with area change), My only "complaint," if you could consider it so, is that the treatment for Mass Addition in Chapter 9 was far too brief. It is akin to the "ballistic element method" used in some preliminary solid propellant rocket motor design codes such as SPP. Expansion on that topic would be welcomed, and perhaps even a brief treatment about the serious problem of slot flow and vena contracta (mentioned on one page only). Even though that is a 2D/3D problem, it is not even mentioned in Gas Dynamics Volume 2. A great read... Buy This Book!

A good introductory book on wireless communications systems

A very good introductory book to the world of wireless network. It covers a number of popular cellular standards including IS-136, IS-95, GSM and the AMPS. However, not much material were devoted to the physical layer (i.e. modulation and coding).

From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!
