About the Author
Gabriela Steier and Kiran K. Patel are attorneys from diverse backgrounds and focused on promoting academic excellence in the broad field of global food safety law. Steier and Patel founded Food Law International (FLI), the first interdisciplinary legal institution of its kind with a comprehensive approach to teach the intricacies of the various aspects of international food law and policy. FLI’s goal is to further interdisciplinary legal education toward a more environmentally sustainable, healthy, and ethical food production around the world.

An Impressive and Comprehensive Volume Filled With Valuable Scholarly Insights and Practical Solutions

Steier and Patel have produced an exceptionally valuable work for scholars, students, and practitioners that recognizes and explores in depth the intersection of three fields -- farm animal, wildlife, and food safety law -- that are often considered separately. This volume covers important new ground in identifying, from international and comparative law perspectives, how these fields can learn from each other and work together to address problems that require the tools and protections of more than one field. As Professor Joyce Tischler noted in her excellent introduction to this book, the issue of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) requires this interdisciplinary approach for the law to address it effectively -- relying exclusively on animal, environmental, or food safety law will not adequately manage this daunting problem. Steier and Patel have assembled an impressive team of contributing authors, several of whom are nationally and internationally recognized experts in their fields, to explore and propose solutions to a wide range of cutting-edge challenges in these fields. As a scholar and teacher in environmental law and animal law, this book is both a valuable desk reference and a potential resource for my course materials and for my students' research papers on these topics. From an animal law perspective, food and environmental law have thus far given consideration to animals only in an anthropocentric sense. Professor Steier and Professor Patel aptly respond to this deficiency by congregating outstanding experts in food law, environmental law, animal law, and health law, and make an excellent case for an inclusive inquiry of the many challenges still ahead of us. The book consistently uses case studies to elucidate the complexities that arise at this intersection, which makes it a valuable resource for students and experienced scholars. What a debut! This is the most useful and innovative book on farm animal law and conservation that I have come across. Especially the section "Tools for Change" provides the blueprint for advocates and practitioners who need an overview of the international framework addressing farm animals and wildlife in the food safety context. For students, this book is super and I will undoubtedly use it a reference for further research. Everyone who cares about animals and the food we eat should read this! Steier and Patel have done a tremendous job here.
