Fernand Braudel, perhaps the single most influential historian of the 20th century, found history a matter of narrative about famous personages and left it a study of the "structures of everyday life": this selection of polemical essays explains how and why he and the historians of the *Annales* school borrowed liberally from once-scorned social sciences, and expanded the scope of historical reflection to that of the *longue duree*. Braudel's major work *The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II* studies the Mediterranean region with a liberation from the story of nation-states which was previously unthinkable; from diet to shipping patterns, almost anything seems more important to him than the scepter. These short essays give the principles behind that book and Braudel's other massive contributions to historical science.

Unlike French philosophers of his time, Braudel did not desire to appear as a self-starting genius capable of writing on everything: his historiographical suggestions are careful and modest, and a phrase which will be familiar to humanities scholars of recent vintage ("we have learned from X that...") occurs frequently in this book. His friend the sociologist Georges Gurevitch is one frequently cited as a source of inspiration, but one of the most charming essays is on a book about a dilapidated Brazilian mining town written by a "100% American" sociologist and nearly every other human science seems to Braudel a source of important tools: geography and demography are clearly major influences on his historical style. Braudel is also willing to hand out prizes to many other historians, classic and novel.

If you are involved with that intellectual pastime mysteriously known simply as "theory", the non-misplaced concreteness of this will be a bit of a relief; if you are a history buff raised on a diet of hagiographic books about the Founding Fathers, best to take a "longer view" with people slightly aware of the significance of revolutions but ready to talk about something else.

A COLLECTION OF THE FAMED FRENCH HISTORIAN'S WRITINGS ON THE NATURE OF HISTORY

Fernand Braudel (1902-1985) was a French historian and a leader of the Annales School (i.e., emphasizing social rather than political or diplomatic themes, and opposed to Marxist historiography). He wrote in the Preface to this 1969 book, "This collection did not originate with me. Two or three years ago, my Polish and then my Spanish friends decided to collect and translate the few articles and essays which I had published in the past twenty years on the nature of history. This volume is the final result."

He explained, "A useful understanding has to be arrived at ... that the way to study history is to view it as a long duration, as what I have called the 'longue dur�e'... which by itself can pose all the great problems of social structures, past and present." (Pg. viii) He suggests, "There is... a history slower that the history of civilizations, a history which almost stands still, a history of man in his intimate relationship to the earth which bears and feeds him; it is a dialogue which never stops repeating itself, which repeats itself in order to persist, which may and does change superficially, but which goes on, tenaciously, as though it were somhow beyond time's reach and ravages." (Pg. 12)

He asserts, "We have already stated our mistrust of a history occupied solely with events. To be fair, though, if there is a sin in being overconcerned with events, then history, though the most obvious culprit, is not the only guilty one. All the social sciences have shared in this error." (Pg. 35) He adds, "sociology and history made up one single intellectual adventure, not two different sides of the same cloth but the very stuff of that cloth itself." (Pg. 69) He clarifies, "As far as the history of the 'longue dur�e' is concerned, history and sociology can hardly be said to meet, or even to rub shoulders. This would be saying too little. What they do is mingle. The 'longue dur�e' is the endless, inexhaustible history of structures and groups of structures. For the historian a structure is not just a thing built, put together; it also means permanence, sometimes for more than centuries." (Pg. 75)

He argues, "If I stand so strongly against the ideas of Toynbee [A Study of History: Abridgement of Volumes I-VI] or Spengler [THE DECLINE OF THE WEST. An abridged edition], it is because these ideas persist in bringing humanity back to the old times... In order to accept that today's civilizations repeat the cycle of that of the Incas, or whomever, we would first have to concede that neither technology, nor economics, nor demography has any very great bearing on civilizations." (Pg. 215)

Braudel's book will be of keen interest to anyone studying the philosophy of history, or historiography in general.

ON HISTORY is the English translation of a book written by the French historian Fernand Braudel that first appeared in France in 1969. However he is probably best known for his comprehensive works on the Mediterranean and civilization and capitalism in the west in the 15th to 18th centuries.
This book is a historiography of sorts and composed of several essays/talks he gave about the need to rethink what we mean by history. He examines three concepts: 1) time; 2) the social sciences and their relation to history; and 3) history in the present age.
What do we mean by history? How does the historian decide where to focus (geography); when to focus (time); and what will be the subject of his focus (art, politics, etc. or all aspects of culture-civilization). Regarding the issue of time, Braudel suggests the social observer must see that the length of time that governs his focus is fundamental. Take the French Revolution for example. When did it begin? Some think seizing the Bastille was the critical moment. But why did the people of France decide to do this? What led to this moment. And when did the currents that led to the moment begin. And, more important perhaps from Braudel's perspective is what was going on in the meantime. How were ordinary people going about their lives?
In the end, the decision regarding time is subjective and this subjectivity is governed by ways of seeing-or social science perspectives. The sociologist is not concerned with the French Revolution or very much else that happened in the past. He might have read Comte and Marx as part of his graduate studies, but his current focus is on the here and now and what his survey results tell him. In his last secton, Braudel examines the effect of the past on the present. He says one might better understand the past by studying living fossils. He uses the work of the anthropologist (Marvin Harris) who studied the people of Minas Velhas, an old mining community in Brazil, as an example. He suggests the anthropologist focused on the present moment-it's kinship patterns and networks and perhaps the distribution of wealth or material goods where the historian might have looked a things a bit differently. He suggests all of us are the sum of everything that made us, but some people are more connected to the past than others. As such they should be studied by historians. He also suggests that civilizations are collections of cultural characteristics and these characeristics have a history. For example, take language. All words have an historical root.

History repeats itself

6 Broken Hearts is a multi-generational romance drama. It's befitting to say that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree or history usually repeats itself and from experience parents tend to have a short memory. As I read this intriguing novel, I kept asking myself what's the catch for this seemingly perfect plot? And I got my answers and I shed some tears mainly because I saw myself a little in the struggles of Juwayriya aka Jules Rouby, her family, and the tough decisions she had to make for the summary goes as this:

"Jules Rouby, as she is affectionately known; has her whole world turned upside down when secrets from her past threaten to affect her future. As she grows into a woman and finds love, her past forces her to choose between a husband and a father. This epic tale is riddled with immense heartache, love, death and the unconditional love of maternal bonds."

Furthermore, I believe anybody that has a person like Nawwaal in their lives is blessed. I know people like her and they come rare like one in a million. 6 Broken Hearts is also a testament that what we do to our parents if often done to us by our children and unless one party decides to forgive, forget, and leave it to Allah, the painful cycle continues. Some plots twists took me down rough, bitter, and happy tidbits of memory lane. I liked the story even though it made me sad a bit

History chapter is lousy--bloopers on Mary Seacole from failure to use good sources

Whatever the merits of this book are generally, there are terrible bloopers in the history chapter
The chapter, by Lundy, has a number of errors of fact in it on Mary Seacole. The coverage is short, but shows that the author fell for the shoddy secondary literature, and failed to consult any primary source, not even Seacole’s own fascinating memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands, 1857. A look at it suffices to show where Lundy went wrong.
Lundy is also wrong on Nightingale opposing germ theory (p. 19), a mistake frequently made by people who don’t bother to read Nightingale herself, or who look only at her writing before germ theory existed--her Notes on Nursing, 1860, and Notes on Hospitals, 1863, predate it. She came to accept it after Robert Koch’s breakthrough research on cholera in India in 1883. Her nursing school taught a rudimentary form of germ theory as early as 1873, that is, pre-Koch, but after Pasteur and Lister (see Lynn McDonald, Florence Nightingale: The Nightingale School pp. 13-21).
1. Why call Seacole an “African nurse” at all? She never identified as African, but called herself “Creole,” praising her Scottish heritage and distancing herself from the “lazy Creole” image (pp. 1-2). She was three quarters white, had a white husband, white business partner and a white clientele. Like well-off white Jamaicans, she employed blacks. She travelled with two black servants, Mac and Mary (pp. 36-7). In the Crimea she had black cooks, “my good-for-nothing black cooks” (p. 141).
2. Seacole’s own book explains that, when regiments in Jamaica began to move to “the East” (Turkey, not yet the Crimea), she did not go to volunteer, but returned to Panama on business (Chapters 7 and 8). She did not, even later, “volunteer her services without pay” but went to London in the autumn to attend to her failing Panamanian gold stocks (p. 74), then, after about two months, began to look for a position as “hospital nurse” (p. 76).
3. Why say that Nightingale was “unwilling to hire Seacole”? Seacole never applied! and Nightingale was already nursing at the Barrack Hospital in Scutari when Seacole decided she would try for a job. Rather late. Not only had Nightingale and her team left, which Seacole acknowledges in her book (p. 78), the second team likely had already left, too (she did not give a date for when she started her job search, but the second group left on 2 December 1854 and she did not decide to go until on or after 30 November).
4. Seacole did not “set up an inn with her own money that provided food and lodging for soldiers and their families near Scutari.” According to her book she set up a hut, which she called the “British Hotel,” but, since it took no overnight stays, was not. Rather it was a restaurant/bar/store/takeaway/catering service for officers, not soldiers. The prices were well what soldiers could pay, and officers and soldiers did not mix socially. Seacole provided a separate “canteen for the soldiery” (p. 114), but did not say what was sold there. Her own advertising for the business specified “officers of the Army and Navy” (p. 81).
5. What “contributions to nursing” did Seacole make? She ran a much-appreciated business. She visited soldiers at the Land Transport Corps Hospital near her hut, and took around magazines donated by officers to them--kind acts. At New Year’s 1855 she took the patients there plum pudding and mince pies (p. 185). She did first aid work, post-battle, on three occasions--for officers and soldiers alike. She deserves commendation for this, but why exaggerate it? Seacole never worked a day in her life in a hospital, and her (much-appreciated) first-aid forays amounted to hours, not days, on three days over a two-year war.
Seacole did not call herself a “nurse,” a term she used for Nightingale and her nurses, but used “doctress, nurse and mother” for herself (p. 124).
Finally, why should Mrs Seacole, a decent, fine, generous businesswoman, be as well known as Nightingale, who led the first team of British women to nurse in war, founded a nursing school, brought professional nursing into the dreaded workhouse infirmaries, and worked to improve hospitals and public health care for the rest of her life?
Mrs Seacole’s life has been hijacked for political propaganda. Diversity, and the promotion of black and other minority nurses, is a good thing. Why not get genuine minority nursing leaders to celebrate, and do this with high standards of research?

The person that edited this book needs to be fired

The material itself of the book is very interesting. However the editing of this book is incredibly poor. Some of the paragraphs are so poorly written throughout the book, that it is quite sad that that sort of writing would make it through the editing process. I would even read the paragraphs out loud to my husband, just to make sure it was not my reading comprehension that was failing, clearly not, they just didn't make any sense.

First off I am in love with the paper they used for the pages it's ...

Clearly haven't finished reading the book since it's over 1000 pages but so far I'm obsessed. First off I am in love with the paper they used for the pages it's like old world books not the shiny white paper from most books today it's a bit yellow / brown and feels like old school kids coloring pages lol and I love it. This book has so many more gods and goddesses in it than i even realized existed and the descriptions on them are perfect, tells you where they originated from and then back story's.

This is by far one of the most extensive books on spirits, demons, ghost, goddesses and genies from all over the world. I keep this by my bedside as a quick reference guide, you can find everything from a beloved djinna spirits, to loa, orisha's, palo, mermaid to madusa. the only thing I wish was included was a tokoloshi dwarf spirit. this encyclopedia give an writeup on just about every spirit you can think of from every culture around the globe. easily one of the best reference book on the subject. this book along with 5000 spells are the mother of all spell work and reference book, this is a complete set for witches and practitioners of any magical path. this book is a excellent reference book, while it does not contain every single spirits as I don't think such a book exist. I have other books on other spirits, demons and angels, but like I said this is the one kept at my bedside for easy reference.

"Just Believe" is an adaptation of the movie "The Lamp" the story of Stanley Walters. The first half of the book begins two years after a tragic accident has left Stanley traumatized. Bitterness and grief have overtaken Stanley. He descends into a deep depression which leaves him unable to focus on his writing career and is destroying his marriage.

A timely meeting with a man named Charles and a simple action message beginning with "just believing" lead to a series of events which restore purpose and meaning to Stanley's life. He returns to writing, his financial situation improves, and his marriage is healed.

Through unexpected meetings with Charles and other "Messengers" Stanley is introduced to ten key principles that lead to success. In the last half of the book Stanley himself becomes the "Messenger" as he shares these time tested actionable steps with the reader on an inspirational journey to success. I appreciate the fact that these steps appear in the table of contents available on the Amazon website.

Stovall and Trost bring into this collaboration a creative story and writing skills that touch the heart and inspire the reader with a message which can lead to life transformation.

I so much enjoyed reading this book, I think that any life can be changed for the better if these principles are applied, it was awesome and kept my attention. I'm going to get copies for my daughter & son-in-law who's marriage is crumbling apart. I hope they both will read it.
I would rate it at 5 stars!

Jim Stovall is a gifted writer. He writes a story that keeps your interest to the very end. I couldn't lay it down. But the story is just the vehicle to deliver very useful life lessons. I read it first for the story, and a second time to get more insight into the points that he brings out. It is entertainment with a lesson. Very good!

About the Author
S�ren Kierkegaard�(1813-55) was born in Copenhagen, the youngest of seven children. His childhood was unhappy, clouded by the religious fervour of his father, and the death of his mother, his sisters and two brothers. Educated at the School of Civic Virtue, he went on study theology, liberal arts and science at university, gaining a reputation for his academic brilliance and extravagant social life. He began to criticize Christianity, and in 1841 broke off his engagement to concentrate on his writing. Over the next ten years he produced a flood of works, in particular twelve major philosophical essays, many written under noms de plume. By the end of his life he had become an object of public ridicule, but he is now enjoying increasing acclaim.�

Alastair Hannay�was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, the University of Edinburgh and University College London. In 1961 he became a resident of Norway and is now Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo.

lighter translation

there is a countervailing advantage this edition offers against the princeton volumes even though its abridged... this is a lighter and smoother English translation. English is not my native language, but I believe many American readers would find the Hong translations as tough-going as I did (even if meticulous). Kierkegaard is already very wordy so this translation is a pain reducer.

challenging, but well worth the effort

for the most part, it goes without saying that pure philosophy texts make for difficult reading. To a great extent, kierkegaard is no exception. However, I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with questions of faith, particularly those involving the relationship between god and man. For me, the most valuable part of the book was the author's clear conflict and passion for the issues. It seemed to me that he was not trying to write as some great philosopher-king trying to bring light to the poor suffering masses, but as a sincerely conflicted human being, down in the trenches with the rest of us, just trying to understand what it all means. In short, although the style may be a little hard to wade through at times, it is a thouroughly thought-provoking and insightful book.

Mystery solved!!

Have you ever seen an open wheel racer, or wondered how Formula 1 cars were able to handle corners so well. This book gives an awesome awesome awesome look into suspension design. It amazes me every time I saw a new design that I would never have thought of. The book shows color pictures of suspension design and many of the components that help transfer all those forces into usable energy. I am planning to build my own formula 1 replica car and suspension was definitely one of the areas that I was unable to come up with a good design for. I now have a better idea but not an actual design. The book is enough to get the idea and foundation to design the suspension but not enough to actually come up with a design. Overall though it was very educational and entertaining.

and it's advantages I could not ask for a better teacher. Allan Staniforth has put it all down so that even the amateur like my self can follow with understanding. Some knowledge of maths and maybe the biggest asset you would need is determination to understand what you are trying to achieve.
