Dated but useful material.

As a fledgling, self-proclaimed gunsmith I enjoyed this book. One particular reason is reading it I felt like it was a mixture of gunsmith history & basic technique. Akin to having your grandfather teaching his trade how they did it "back in the old days". Is this book for everyone? No, but if you enjoy this kind of old school reading that gives you very basic information written in the late 1930's-40's then you'll enjoy Elementary Gunsmithing.
Don't purchase this book with expectations of multiple large, detailed drawings/pictures. You will be disappointed if you do.

Great book, but not for everybody

I need to make some disclosures before posting this review. First, I have been trading and investing in the markets for over 30 years. I have done very, very, very well, being able to retire years ago at age 52. These days I am more of a short term trader than a longer term investor, using systems that are based either entirely on technical analysis or hybrid systems that combine technical analysis with elements of fundamental analysis. Second, I have long been a harsh critic of so called "penny stocks" (there is not a uniform definition of "penny stocks," but most consider stocks selling for $5 a share or less as penny stocks). Penny stocks tend to be very risky to either trade or invest in for several reasons and there have been thousands of scams involving penny stocks over the years, like "pump and dump" scams or "short and distort" scams. Third, I did not learn or expect to learn much from this book. I got the book because I thought it would be full of lies and misrepresentations about penny stocks and it was my intention to expose both the author and the book as full of nonsense. Now to my review.

This is an outstanding book. I give it 5 stars. The author (Peter Leeds) has a very good reputation and I know based on my own training, trading, investing and experience for over 30 years that what the author says and explains in the book is solid. No nonsense, no lies, no misrepresentations. The author candidly admits the risky nature of most penny stocks, and attempts to explain how to do fundamental analysis of the companies that have issued the penny stocks to separate the good from the bad. In the end, all movements in stock prices can be traced back to earnings, either actual, expected or speculated. The author explains how to investigate or "kick the tires" of the companies that have issued penny stocks to separate the junk companies from those that have real earnings and growth potential.

The book consists of 15 chapters and is pretty comprehensive about explaining what fundamental analysis is (as opposed to technical analysis, which is more focused on the past and probable price movement of a stock in the short term than the company behind the stock). Chapter 1 is "Getting to Know Penny Stocks," Chapter 2 is "Deciding if Penny Stocks are Right for You," Chapter 3 is "Buying and Selling Penny Stocks," Chapter 4 is "Avoiding Promotions, Scams and Bribes," Chapter 5 is "Developing a Strategy," Chapter 6 is "Doing Your Research," Chapter 7 is "Picking a Winner," Chapter 8 is "Trading Strategies," Chapter 9 is "Fundamental Analysis," Chapter 10 is "Financial Ratios: Comparing Apples to Apples" (explains things like Price to Sales or P/S ratios, Quick Ratios, Current Ratios, etc.), Chapter 11 is "The Abstract Review in Penny Stocks," Chapter 12 is "Technical Analysis with Penny Stocks" (the author does not go deeply into technical analysis as it often does not work well or at all with penny stocks, the author explaining why in the book), Chapter 13 is "Ten Rapid Result Tactics," Chapter 14 is "Ten Trading Truths," and finally, Chapter 15 is "Ten Key Considerations for Companies."

If you are managing your own investments, want to consider investing in penny stocks, and do not know much about funadamental analysis of penny stock companies or how to do it on your own (frankly if you are managing your own investments and do not know how to do fundamental analysis, you probably should not be managing your own investments), this is a good book to get you started. This book like most all the "Dummies" books is aimed more towards the beginner, not the person already an expert. The book speaks in plain English and is relatively easy to understand. I highly recommend it for those just getting interested or started. Another very pleasant surprise is that the author of the book, Peter Leeds, is pretty easy to find and contact on most social media platforms and he actually responds to people. This book would also be helpful if you are depending upon somebody else to alert you to good or high quality penny stocks, as your knowledge of how to do fundamental analysis would enable you to better research any alerts or recommendations you get (most of which come with something in the fine print warning you to do your own research or "due diligence").

One other thing I should mention is that there are a few typos in the book. Nothing serious and nothing that changes meaning. I mention the matter only because some people like to play English teacher instead of book reviewer. Bottom line is 5 stars from me. Very surprised, and pleasantly so. But this book is not for everybody. If you are an experienced investor in penny stocks and know how to research or do fundamental analysis on companies issuing penny stocks, you probably have little need of this book. Likewise, if you want to just trade instead of invest in penny stocks, based on technical instead of fundamental analysis, this book will be of little help to you as only one chapter addresses technical analysis (and the author explains why technical analysis often does not work with penny stocks).

Some pretty good information bogged down in needless repetition

Overall, there is some very good information for beginning investors in this book. But, it is reiterated two or three times what is going to be taught in the book before anything is even taught. Probably 30% of the book is taken up with explanations of what's coming up, rather than just getting to the point. I was disappointed that there was almost no technical instructions on how to use stock screeners, Etc.

This is a book of vibrant new aviation art from the American Society of Aviation Artists. There are 112 paintings by 32 artists mostly done from 1975-1990. Each is a full page in brilliant color on heavy stock. The paintings are arranged chronologically by subject matter from World War I to the Space Shuttle. Here you will find most of history's famous aircraft as well as some of the most rare and unusual.The style of these paintings is photo-realistic and highly detailed. Each is historically accurate and the complete story behind the painting is given on the opposite page. Information on the artists is also included. This is a great book for the student of aviation history as well as the art fan. The plates would look great framed if you could bear to remove them from the book.

The narrator, Isabel, tells of growing up in L.A., the product of a brief teenage union between a vain, paranoid, destructive girl from an eccentric, wealthy, Jewish family, and a warped, brutal youth with a "heritage of Catholic poverty." Emotionally abandoned by both parents (she is brought up by grandparents; her mother lives nearby but withholds intimacy; she doesn't see her father until her adolescence), Isabel accepts perverse ways of earning their favor. As a child, she is sexually abused by her mother; later, her father will repeatedly rape her. Equating pain with endearment, and sexual submissiveness and degradation with sanctification, Isabel pleads for a declaration of love from her mother as the latter dies of cancer, but is denied even that succor. Harrison relates this story in hypnotically intense prose, somewhat broadening the claustrophobic viewpoint of her protagonist by evoking what in outward respects is a typical California childhood in the 1960s. A very good read, but not a light one

I read Kathryn Harrison when I'm feeling dark and moody. Her excellent books, including "Thicker Than Water," tend to deal mainly with familial relationships that are anything but picture-perfect. I would not recommned her work if you're just looking to kill time with a light-hearted read, but, if you want something that will haunt you, and maybe even make you think a little, pick her stuff up. She's worth it.

Excellent debut novel

Now that "The Kiss" is steaming up readers, and making Kathryn Harrison a much better-known name in book circles, readers should be drawn to her first novel. The story is about a young woman's need for love from a mother who can't show it, and her detachment from a father who "loves" her too much. I read this book and wondered if the details were autobiographical: there was a resonance to the narrative that suggested a deep truth being revealed and hidden at once.
The writing is superb, penetrating and haunting, the kind of book you cannot get out of your mind when you are not reading it. Isabel, the young woman whose story is being told, displays an almost Joycean detachment from the events happening to her, and we see them whirling about her narrative perspective, clear and yet somehow dizzying. I would recommend that the effort to obtain this book, even used, will reward the reader with an impeccably drawn portrait of the artist as a young woman.

Disturbing...

The first book I read by Kathryn Harrison was 'Exposure', which I loved. I picked up 'Thicker Than Water' expecting to love it, too. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine - my initial reaction after finishing it was that I couldn't deal with having it on my bookshelf.
After a couple of years (and after 'The Kiss' came out - which I read and, oddly enough, loved) I picked up 'Thicker Than Water' again. It still disturbed me, but I think it disturbed me less knowing that it was based on something that had occurred. (Notice that I say 'based'...all the critics denouncing Harrison for writing an 'autobiographic account disguised as a first novel' are, in my humble opinion, full of it.) I think what bothered me in the first place was that someone could just make up such a thing...that someone could, with merely the power of their imagination, make it seem so real. Which Harrison does. She has a gift for bringing the reader inside her head.
The only reason I give it 4 stars as opposed to 5 is because, as I said, it disturbed me.
But sometimes it's good to be disturbed.

I really like this book so far. I've been taking piano lessons about five years. I've tried several of the songs, a couple I can play pretty well but for the most part the music will give me a challenge. At first glance I thought I would need a more advanced book but I've found this book to be more challenging than I first thought. After five years of lessons I wanted something with some challenge and this was it. Not so hard that it's frustrating but not for a beginner. If you are looking for Disney songs that are more advanced than the easy piano, this is the book for you.

If you're looking for piano solos buy this book!

Absolutely beautiful arrangements of disney songs! This is not the typical piano-voice-guitar tab book, so if you're looking for something with lyrics and something that is easy don't buy it. If you're looking for a book of elaborate (but not impossible) piano solos, like I was, of your favorite disney songs, this is the book you want. I picked up the piano again after a very long break. It took awhile to learn the songs, but with hard work they are worth the effort!
