A Classic From The Early Years

This review is for the boxed first edition of "Masks of Nyarlathotep".

As there is a current edition (4th at time of writing) available for under $40 it should go without saying that the boxed set is really a collector's item and collector asking prices will prevail.

The boxed set was produced while Call of Cthulhu Second Edition was in print. It will play without modification with any edition of the Call of Cthulhu rules from 1st to 4th. Minor changes will be needed in order to bring it into spec for 5th and 6th edition rules. These involve such petty issues as Oratory and Debate being combined as "Persuade" and possibly needing to adjust for a higher skill allocation under the later rules.

The tome reading rules will get in the way with this campaign if you run under edition 2+ rules, so you will have to hand-wave in places anyway. This is true of all the versions of Masks of Nyarlathotep, as is the need to read ahead extensively as a GM. The upside is that the reading is fun as the campaign is extremely well-conceived and written.

I bought this item years ago, in the mid 80s, new. If you are buying it today you should be aware that the box contained many components, and that it is entirely possible for some of these to be missing in a secondhand set.

From recent memory, the box contents should include:

2 business cards & 1 matchbox kit on glossy card sheet
1 booklet of handouts
1 New York booklet (blue cover)
1 London booklet (maroon cover)
1 Cairo booklet (yellow cover)
1 Nairobi booklet (brown cover)
1 Shanghai booklet (green cover)

(and sundry sheets of advertising matter)

The third and fourth editions (bound as books) contain a sixth chapter set in Australia which was edited out of this version and the second edition, but you will find most of that material in the sourcebook "Terror Australis" if you can find a copy.

This is a world-spanning campaign that sets the players on the trail of a missing playboy, The action starts in New York, but after that the players drive the direction of their investigations depending on which clues they choose to follow and in what order they follow them. The object is, of course, to avert world disaster. We are, after all, talking about Call of Cthulhu.

The quality of the materials in this boxed set was very high. The separate handout booklet makes photocopying a dream (not so with a perfectly bound paperback, the binding of choice for Chaosium these days, but the handouts for the 4th edition can be downloaded as a pdf file from the Chaosium website) so one can preserve the handouts for repeat play. The handouts are also double sided, so if you can reproduce that you can have newspaper clippings with realistic obverse sides and so forth.

The campaign itself suffers from an element of Time Crunch, and the GM may find him/herself having to introduce elements to push the investigation forward at a quicker pace on occasions. It is also very, very deadly. Even careful players will stand a very good chance of having characters killed from under them as the menace involves very active, very violent cults. Looking back on some notes I took on a run-through of this in the late 80s, I see that every player had a reserve character waiting in the wings and that some players lost both of them in a single session (some people never learn to tread softly of course).

Even so, players from that period (sadly the group no longer meets due to real-life getting in the way) often reminisce at get-togethers about various scenes and adventures they had in the course of Masks of Nyarlathotep, and I can't think of a better recommendation for the campaign than that.

Basic but good

This guide book is thorough when it comes to the maps of Bolivia and its provinces, a listing of guns, and organizing of missions according to areas of influence, security etc (the bad guys' hierarchy). The mission sections are detailed with enemies positions so it is like having a drone assisting you with marking. It also tells entry points into enemy bases.
-- There are some things that I wish the book had:
I wish the skill tree was detailed out more specifically about what each skill does. The book does list these things but it's the same generic explanation as the game. For example, the Epic Skill of explosion radius indicates (in the game menu) that you have a wider blast radius; but the video clip shows possibly a mortar strike, I can't tell; and my frag grenade explosions don't seem any bigger. So I decided to consult the book but it doesn't explain it any better. I'm not reducing any stars for this lack though, because the book is still helpful. And the digital version included as a code for online use is very useful. I do wish Prima had an app; that would be convenient.

About the Author
Alison Booth is Associate Professor of English at the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on Victorian literature and feminist theory and criticism, and her teaching at Virginia has ranged from "The Nineteenth-Century British novel" to "Utopias and Science Fiction." She is the author of Greatness Engendered: George Eliot and Virginia Woolf and editor of Famous Last Words: Changes in Gender and Narrative Closure.

Kelly J. Mays has taught writing and literature courses for 25 years ― at Stanford University (where she earned her Ph.D.), in the Harvard Expository Writing Program, at New Mexico State University, and (since 2001) at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where she is now an Associate Professor of English. �A British literature specialist whose work has appeared in Victorian Studies, Victorian Poetry, Critical Inquiry, and other major scholarly journals, she is currently at work on a book exploring when and why nineteenth-century Britons began to label their age, their literature, and even themselves "Victorian."

Good for first time Students

Usually I hate having to read school books. I bought this for my Columbia College English Comp II class and this book contains a lot of stories and poems to catch a readers attention. The book somehow makes learning how to write persuasive or any other type of essay more interesting than it would seem to a person that dislikes writing all together. I actually wrote less because of the helpful notes in this book.

I thought this was going to be just another textbook, but it's filled with amazing stories & poems. This is one that I will not sell back, but keep forever for the amazing literature. So happy with this one. I love to read & plan on reading every story, poem & play in this book.

Bent and has black marks on it

I bought this book full well aware that it was used. However, I feel that it's in pretty bad shape. The front cover has damage, a lot of the corners on the bottom right portion are ruined and it's covered in hair. Eew. I don't think I will buy from this seller again.

Absolutely great story telling. Cinematic in scope. Movies for your mind. Intelligent and very entertaining for broad minded souls. One of the best from Clive, including for me Imajica, Everville, Weaveworld and Cold Heart Canyon. If you love his brand of magic and world building, I highly recommend Tim Powers, in particular, "Anubis Gaates" and the Faultline series, "Last Call, "Expiration Date"and "Earthquake Weather". Just amazing stories and charecters.

I absolutely LOVED this book

Oh boy, I absolutely LOVED this book! Clive Barker does a great job with story-telling, and he pulled off the metaphysical concepts in the book flawlessly. I'm really into dark fantasy/horror, and this is one of the best of its kind that I've read. Whenever I picked up the book to read, I didn't want to put it down, and thus finished it in less than a week. If you're considering reading this, I highly recommend it.

I assume anyone reading this is already famiiar with Borges, and won't need my opinions about the genius of his stories.

I'm writing to convince you to buy this exact edition*, which is long out of print, even though it might be expensive and tricky to find. This is the only version I've seen which has been translated (in part) by the author. He insisted on working with translator Thomas di Giovanni, because, he said, he didn't fully trust his own English. But Borges's feel for the language was sensitive, and he believed he had to rethink every idea in English, rather than just translating words. The result is a set of translations that I find more natural, lifelike, and funny, than any others.

Here's what I mean by funny: a bilingual friend, who read this edition side-by-side with the original, said that the translation is actually funnier than the original Spanish. We picked apart a section from the title story ... English idioms allowed Borges to make satirical passages more ridiculous than he could in his own language.

Other translators, like Hurley, and di Giovanni (working alone), are good in a technical sense. But none of them had the authority or professional latitude to get away with this kind of re-thinking. The result in most cases is a translation that's defensible in terms of accuracy, but which feels stiff and unnatural. In "Death and the Compas," the most popular di Giovanni translation starts with a remark about the detective's "reckless perspicacity." The Borges version translates this as "rash mind."

The former translation sets me up to think the story will be some kind of mannerist piece, with flowery, archaic errudition playing a central role. But it isn't, and it doesn't. The phrases just end up feeling forced. Looking at the Spanish, you can figure out why di Giovanni chose those words. "Perspicacity" is a fairly direct translation, and even shares a root with the Spanish word. But it sounds and feels wrong. Borges, as a translator, was able to leave the binds of the old Spanish behind, and make the story new again.

Other translations just sound ugly to me now. They're hard to read. This one doesn't read like a translation at all, which makes perfect sense. The sad news is that Borges was thwarted (by dying, I assume) in his attempts at translating the rest of his books. So this is the one collection that we English speakers with lousy Spanish can enjoy to the fullest.
