About the Author

Anulekha Dhara earned her Ph.d. in IIT Delhi and subsequently moved to IIT Kanpur for her post-doctoral studies. Currently, she is a post-doctoral fellow in Mathematics at the University of Avignon, France. Her main area of interest is optimization theory.

Joydeep Dutta is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Kanpur. His main area of interest is optimization theory and applications.

About the Author

Safa Al Ani (Sophie-chan) was born in 1990 in Iraq. She is a self-taught manga artist who gained a following by posting drawing videos on her YouTube channel titled "sophiechan90" with over 23 million video views. Sophie began drawing and writing stories when she was 7-years old, determined to reach her goals of having her own manga series/anime adaption and becoming well-known worldwide as a manga artist.

With hard-work, patience and determination, Sophie was able to publish her first graphic novel The Ocean of Secrets, a full volume manga series in April 2015.

Perspective of a beginner artist

As a beginner in drawing (period), I thought a good way to learn how to draw would be to draw something I was passionate about. I always had an interest in manga/anime so learning how to draw manga was a logical step in improving as an artist. I painstakingly compared each of the various beginner books (Mark Crilley, Chris Hart, etc) and ultimately settled on this one for various reasons.

1) Sophie Chan's art style resonates with me personally. Note, her style may not resonate with you. I was very set on buying Mark Crilley's Manga book online but when I went to the bookstore, I just couldn't get into the style of the drawings I would be learning from. Mark Crilley's book seemed very good in terms of learning how to draw manga, but Sophie-Chan's art style is close to one I would like to learn myself. They seemed more "modern," or mature, if that makes sense. I realize perhaps this may seem silly, but I think it is important to like the style of the book you are learning from.

2) Very good step-by-step instructions and a decent sample size of drawings to learn from. As I was looking through the books, I realized a lot of these beginner books are not going to have it all; they won't have all of the references for anatomy, eyes, faces, expressions, poses etc that you would want. You have to pick and choose what is important for you. For me, I wanted to learn the basics, and I thought this book was the best in terms of breaking down faces, eyes, anatomy from a general perspective. I would definitely recommend buying a separate book later for areas you really want more practice or references with though.

3) good section on coloring with pencils, markers, software. Just from glancing at this section alone I decided I would be using software to color once I become proficient with basic lines and shading.

I really like this book. That said, its not perfect, and I think it could benefit from including another set of step-by-step drawings for women/men (faces, body, etc) as well as poses and anatomy.

I'm usually too lazy to review things, but honestly this probably one of the best how to draw manga books for a beginner like me. This book is easy to follow and has a lot of step by step drawings. It tells hows to draw different head types; male, female, old, young. Shows how to draw different eye styles, hair styles, mouth. This book really basically tells everything about how to draw a character with step by step drawings. What's in this book is what I've been searching for. I tried a lot of other how to draw books. They end up being a bunch of text and not much on the step by step drawings. I'm really loving this book.

If you're a beginner beginner then this book is good to use

If you're a beginner beginner then this book is good to use, otherwise it's another how to draw art book of different head shapes and such. Style is a bit old, but still good to use. If you really want to learn how to draw, then I suggest you use books like complete guide to life drawing. I do however like how it's easy follow through. Great for young children.

Why this study guide?

Well, the fact that you're on this page is already telling: no one just stumbles across a physical chemistry study guide. As far as study guides go...there are only three that I know of. One is full of errors, so that's a no-go. The second one is the ACS and that just basically gives you a light rundown before assaulting you with questions. The third is this book. And I've got to say, it's a freaking awesome study guide (thank god, or I'd be seriously screwed; seriously, how can there only be three study guides out there?).

This book is sectioned into parts...Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics...etc., etc. It combines both P.Chem I and P.Chem II (if your college has separated them into separate classes). I'll go into the pros/cons here, but know this prior: if your textbook is anywhere near as crappy as mine (i.e. explains all the theoretical crap, but doesn't bother to explain how to actually apply it), you want this book. Stat.

Pros:
(1) The glossary. Yeah, I know. "WTF, all books have a glossary!" True, yet not true. All books may have a glossary, but not a lot of study guides do. Continuing on, even if they somehow do have a glossary, it seems to be far lacking. This book has an extensive glossary, making it really easy to find what you're studying in class/the textbook spur of the moment.

(2) Tons of problems sectioned out by category IN the category. Ok, so what do I mean. I mean, take for example the subject Thermodynamics. Inside thermo, there's a bunch of other sub-topics. This book takes example problems and sections them out into their sub-categories. Then, it gives you way more sample problems with answers (also sectioned out by category). Although these aren't worked, they're still really useful for practice.

(3) Really easy to understand. And by that, I mean REALLY easy to understand. I've never had problems understanding anything until I reached this class. The problem for me, in this class, was the notation. Anyways, this book actually explains everything fairly well (basically, the fundamentals of p.chem). For more extensive knowledge then, it's easy to go back to the text book. As I said earlier, the textbook does all of the theoretical crap but doesn't explain the fundamentals. This explains the fundamentals which then makes understanding the theoretical crap so much easier.

Cons:

(1) In example problems, sometimes the book lists steps without actually saying what they did to get there. I.e., it does something from one step to the next, and doesn't say what was actually done. It's not a terrible problem, it just makes it a little more time consuming trying to figure out what they did.

(2) Tends to use a lot of abbreviations to save space. It'll tell you to use equation 2.3 and 2.5 to solve and get 'this'. It's irritating to go back and get those equations to solve the problem. But it's a relatively small irritation.

All in all, rating this book a 9/10~ It's a fairly excellent book, and you should give it a try if you're in need of a study guide.

Very limited use

I found this book is too technical to be useful. I want to like it, but to be honest, I can't say it has ever helped me understand a topic I was having trouble with. It is all math, math, and more math. That may be what physical chemistry is all about, but the problem is the math does not do a better job of teaching you than textbook math does. If you need more help than your textbook provides, this doesn't have it. The short paragraphs that introduce you to concepts use the most technical words they possibly can, so I feel like I am reading a math book or my own Atkins' texbook. If you need help with physical chemistry and do not have a strong math background, this is not the book for you, even if it is cheap.

Great Supplemental/Review Material

For as cheap as it is, this is a great value. It reviews every concept in physical chemistry very well. Obviously it won't replace your textbook, but it will at least cover subjects that maybe your textbook omits. The outline was last updated in 1989, but, honestly, physical chemistry has not changed in at least the last twenty or thirty years. Conceptually, all of physical chemistry has remained the same, so I would not say that this book is obsolete.

John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. Grandfather points out that many religions and cultures, from Christianity to Hinduism to the Shawnee tribe, have their own variations, and he quotes six examples. The boy wonders what the world would be like if more people practiced the Rule, and Grandfather explains that "It begins with you." The rich, golden paintings and large format reinforce the importance of the topic. The cherubic boy and his old-fashioned grandfather gaze solemnly out of the pages, making eye contact with readers and inviting them into the discussion. Swirling patterns of animal shapes and symbols from various traditions are reminders that the topic is as abstract as the art, with much room for interpretation. This is less a story than a discussion starter, and teachers, parents, and religious leaders will welcome it as a clear introduction to an important subject. While there are more compelling examples throughout children's literature of characters practicing the Golden Rule, from Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess to Chris Raschka's Yo! Yes? It's All in the Telling

This picture book successfully breaks a rule of writing: that it is better to "show" than to "tell," for it is a conversation, mainly a telling, the grandfather explaining to the child what the Golden Rule is--seeing it first on a wall, then walking along discussing it. He tells the child that in some religions it's stated in the negative, "Do nothing to other people that you would not like having done to you." The boy wonders how he can practice this rule, and the grandfather gives an example: Suppose, he says, you were the new kid in school, how would you feel? "New kids always look scared," says the boy. He and his grandfather decide that smiling at the new kid is applying the Golden Rule.

The conversation takes place as the boy and his grandfather stroll down the street, then sit on a park bench. So it breaks still another rule: children's books need action. Why it works, I believe, is the solemnity of the lesson. The boy is delighted to be the center of attention, to hear important information, ancient information. A child reader will identify with this moment, when something important is being taught, when the boy wants to respond with the proper gravity. "I wonder how things would change if everyone lived by the Golden Rule," says the grandfather. "I think people would be nicer," says the boy. "Kinder."

The pages are beautifully textured with layers of paint and fascinating detail. Beasts and deities of the world's religions float in the background, as if part of the boy's and the grandfather's imaginations. Portraits of the boy and his grandfather are sensitively done, sometimes bleeding off the page, leaving only one side or the top half of a face, giving the effect of capturing a moment.

This "telling" book with lush illustrations will give children and their parents much to discuss and think about.

Timeless story, Fantastic illustration!

I was searching for all the books that Gabi Swiatkowska illustrated that were available at our library. This one just resonated with us. I'd like to own ALL her books but this is a great start. My daughter is a precocious 5.5, yet the stories were thought provoking and can be reread and rediscussed for a long time as we all know. I loved that they have tried to interpret all the religion's spin on the "Golden Rule". Especially since American public schools now tend to dilute out all religion, or faith, whereas I'd prefer inclusion of all. The illustrations are once again fantastic and add mystery and interest to all of the interpretations respectfully.

The Golden Rule

What a lovely, pensive, ethical book for children. Through the love of a gentle grandfather and a tot (boy), primary readers learn about the golden rule in a multi-cultural way. The two characters are out walking when they see the golden rule, in both its do and do not form, on various signs. The child asks and the adult explains in warm, comprehensible language that this is a rule that promotes civility and morality between people and nations. He explains it is golden because it is so valuable a way of living that your life shines. He encourages the boy to use his imagination to understand; the boy empathetically puts himself in various age appropriate situations, showing concretely that he (and the reader) gets it. The grandfather explains that many religions promote this rule with Judaism being second after Christianity (ouch, the Jewish bible came first and double ouch, the art gives Christianity a half page color spread while Judaism is reduced to two small square sketches of symbols). The child understands this rule is simple, but not easy, to carry out and that it starts with each person. The lesson is delivered without didacticism and with smashingly gorgeous art; the layout is sophisticated and the muted colors mix grey and white drawings with the active color spreads. This book is not Jewish, but it contains a Jewish teaching that is so valuable this stunning volume, its warts to be noted, is recommended for children from 5 to 8 years old. Reviewed by Ellen Cole

This book is actually an expanded review of the Fitchett-Nolan book and its thesis. For each of the nine cases and for each of the three associated critiques, I have provided a summary. Following that, I add my own critique of each case itself and of each associated critique. Following that is a summary and critique of the chapter on ethical concerns by David B. McCurdy. Finally, I set the entire book in the context of the clinical pastoral training tradition.
Most of the published work on clinical pastoral supervision seems to have focused on principles and theory. The value of the Fitchett-Nolan work is that it is based on specific clinical cases, the nine cases that are published in the book itself. I hope they will have set the standard for future publications. Theory is useful, but nothing is quite as useful nor quite as engrossing as a specific clinical case.
Fitchett, in his introduction to the book, argues for more published cases in the clinical pastoral training field. The current paucity of published clinical cases is actually puzzling in that the movement itself began a century ago with the study of cases. The founder of clinical pastoral training, Anton Boisen, actually made himself and his personal troubles the principal "case." Therefore, I second Fitchett's call for more published cases in the field as the best route for learning the art and science of pastoral care, counseling. and psychothereapy.
The work that follows is a running commentary on the 9 cases as well as the 27 commentaries on the cases and on the summary essay, "Ethical Issues in Case Study Publication.” In addition to the two editors, six additional persons appear as critics of some of the cases. For better or for worse, I have commented on each and every one.
I have elected throughout not to name the specific chaplains whose work is included herein. I am not thereby keeping a confidence. Their names and current positions are clearly identified in the Fitchett-Nolan book itself. But I am electing not to expose them further. I prefer to grant them what meager privacy yet available to them, which is not much.
I actually feel some admiration for the nine who put their clinical pastoral work on view for all the world to see—and to pick apart. It is a very courageous choice to put one's work in the public arena for scrutiny. It is also potentially hurtful, particularly if one has thin skin, and, more so, if one has enemies eager to enter the fray for purposes of devaluation. No one is without flaws. No professional works without missteps. And no one is immune to certain blindnesses. But few would choose to lay their flaws and missteps open to public scrutiny. We have to applaud the courage of these presenting chaplains and pastoral counselors who have laid their professional work open to public examination in this book. They have my admiration and my esteem.
But, as the reader will see, I have not elected to coddle or to consider the feelings of the presenters of the nine cases published here. I am assuming that they are professionals prepared to receive straightforward critique of their work. Nor do I spare their published critics. Nor do I myself expect to be spared strong rebuttal, particularly in instances where I might have been wrong or uninformed.

Author recaptures the pastoral care tradition

This book clearly articulates, though not specifically, but by critique the different approaches to "pastoral care." The two approaches to pastoral care are from CPSP and ACPE.

Admission: the author of this book did not make this claim. Knowing the history CPE history and training I am making this claim.

Reading, I found again that which I had lost: a sense of the soul of pastoral care—to listen for the voice, the humanity of a patient As I read, I was reminded of my first two units of training and the excitement of pastoral ministry. Perhaps most of all I found the crispness of the commentary helpful as I survey the often fuzzy landscape of both parishes and institutional work in this day and age.
