For centuries the people of Ollghum Keep relied on the knights of the Green Order to protect them from the horrors of the haunted wood. Now, as before, a monstrous army marches on their small town. But this time, the Green Order is nowhere to be found.
The Bishop sends the priest Heden into the wood, to find out why. Arriving at their secret priory, Heden discovers their commander is dead, the remaining knights paralyzed with despair. They will not act, they will not tell him what happened, and with each hour the monstrous army gets closer to Ollghum Keep. Thousands will die if the priest fails.
When the knights start dying one by one, Heden must race to unravel the conspiracy of silence and save the knights from themselves so they can save the people they were sworn to guard.

From the Author
I wanted to write a hard-boiled fantasy novel. Short, brisk, with some tough guy dialog and a little humor. I wanted something that showed characters behaving in what I considered a more human fashion, and I wanted something short, more like the books I came up with in the 1980s. 350 pages and out. No map, no wildly shifting points of view. Just tough guys and fantasy action and the human heart in conflict with itself. And a little humor here and there.

A Freaking 10!!!
By Walking the Path
Let’s just say that I bought this book because I thoroughly love Matt’s YouTube channel. I went into to thinking it would just be a lukewarm re-imaging of D&D. Sadly I pictured Drizzt Do'Urden like characters roaming a sad one dimensional landscape. But forget that nonsense. Matt provided a fully flushed and deeply immersive world that did something other authors haven’t been able to do for years. The Crazy Wizard Matthew Colville elicited an honest to god emotional reaction. I rate this book a freaking 10, and would like to inform Matt he has minted a fan of his written work and channel for as long as I breathe. Thank You, Matt for reminding me how reading should be.

A fine first novel
By S. K. Petersen
If you're a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, you'll enjoy this book. While one doesn't need to be familiar with D&D to read the book, fans of roleplaying will recognize the tropes of the genre. As for the story itself, the strength of the book for me is that it takes a character class (the cleric or "priest" from D&D) that I frankly find somewhat boring and created a compelling and interesting character that is free from some of the stereotypes one associates with priests. He's not what you'd call "godly" and doesn't seem especially devout for the most part. The priest in the story is a fully-realized, three-dimensional character. There are some other well-drawn characters in the book, but the priest is clearly the one in whom the author has invested the most thought. The plot is akin to a mystery, which is not typical for fantasy novels, and it works well here in driving the action forward. My constructive criticism of the novel is that it could have used a good editor's pen. There is some redundancy and some ambiguity that I felt could have been corrected through more editing. There are, for example, some rough transitions between the action with the priest, Heden, and what was happening with the girl, Vanora. The central mystery is also somewhat confusing and I think it's due to some overwriting. One keeps wanting Heden to get to "it," but there's too much obfuscation thrown in Heden's way and it makes the mystery too drawn out such that the reader gets a little lost (at least this reader was) by the time the big reveal comes about. All in all, however, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next book in the series, Thief.

(My D&D campaign is better for it
By KRB
I originally purchased this book as a way to support the author, because I appreciate the tips and tricks I've learned from his youtube channel. (My D&D campaign is better for it.) But I love fantasy (obviously) so I had to read it.
If you're looking for long descriptions or character backstory, this is not the book for you. It is short and to-the-point, which I appreciate in my current state of 'busy'. The main character is interesting, and the tiny hints of his past that the author drops are enough to make him very intriguing. The story flowed well and didn't lose my interest at any point. I appreciated that the story consistently focused on Heden and one point of view (something I'm struggling with as I read the second book) and that we discover the plot along with him.
There are definitely grammar/spelling mistakes, but nothing that overwhelms the immersion or ruined the experience for me. A quick polish is all it needs.
Overall very enjoyable, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
P.S. For what it's worth, I believe this book sets the record for "most uses of the word pig-f**cker" in a short novel. :)
