A must-have manual to overcome panic
By miss firdaus b mamat
The self-help manual on panic attack is exactly what is says, will not create more anxiety symptoms with its friendly explanation, examples and exercise. This must-have manual encompassing all the major principles of CBT in an easy and digestive read, avoiding the unnecessary use of psycho-babble and complicated jargon. Dr Whalley has successfully written a clear guideline to the reader through the basic principles highlighting how perspective influences mood and behaviour, before gradually explaining thinking styles and practical things to do when the symptoms attack in more depth. The manual provided enough simple everyday examples, illustrations and visual diagrams to help the reader comprehend concepts raised. This book is not just for those who suffer from panic attack but also useful to facilitate clinicians to help their sessions with clients.

Fun, informative poetry about the brain.

Elephant on brain
"You have a lot on your mind"
Neurologist says.

The brain has fascinated philosophers and scientists for centuries. And why not? It is perhaps the most mysterious thing in the universe. Yet it’s probably safe to say that The Little Book of Neuroscience Haikuapproaches the brain in a way that no one has before.

Neuroscientist Eric H. Chudler has created a whimsical yet educational book of haiku about the brain, each poem conforming to the strict definition of the Japanese verse form: three lines containing five syllables, seven syllables, and five syllables. Organized in three parts, one part discusses places (areas of the brain); one takes up things (such as brain scans); and one is about people (such as the researchers who have helped us learn about this elusive organ). Extensive notes complete the book, educating readers in an amusing, poetic, and at times moving fashion.

This book will be sure to delight science readers.

It can be enjoyed by professionals in the field and anyone else interested in learning some of the basics in neuroscience. . . . [A] pleasure to read.” (International Journal of Psychotherapy)

“This small book carries a lot of punch.” (The Person-Centered Journal)

“[A] quick, entertaining, and simple way to learn about the brain. . . . It is also a suitable format for quick flips while waiting at the doctor’s office, waiting for a train, waiting in line, etc. If you are suffering from information overload, this book is a nice change of pace for learning about the nervous system in short bursts of reading.” (Whose Brain Is It)

“This book combines my love of the brain and love of words and poetry in such an enjoyable and informational manner. You can use these Haiku as topic or class starters, as clarification, or as a lesson in itself about a term. . . . Do get this book – it’s a great addition to your arsenal of classroom teaching tools.” (Teaching High School Psychology)

“[A]n innovative way to learn some facts about neuroscience . . .” (The Lancet Neurology)

“This is an unusual presentation which quietly marries Japanese verse with simple neuroscientific topics. . . . I found it a worthwhile addition to my library.” (Treasure Time: Reviews of Psychological Novels)

Neuroscience ideas
Tied together here.” (Janet M. Dubinsky, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience, University of Minnesota)

A pocket-sized laugh!
By K. Cavin
Bought this as a stocking stuffer for my son-in-law, a newly minted Ph.D., who just moved himself and my daughter across country to pursue post-doc research. It is a cleverly written little book and who knew that neuroscience could offer such fertile field for Haiku! We shared a long-distance laugh over just a few succinct syllables.

The author/artist's trademark cut-paper collages add distinction to a tale of a toad who saves three frogs from a flood?and from endless bickering. Ages 3-7.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 Although there's not as much depth as in Frederick (1966) or as much whimsy as in Alexander. . . (1969, both Pantheon), this is still a fine choice for spring story hours. Three childlike frogs spend their days bickering and baiting each other: it's mine, claims one about the water. Another purports ownership of the earthor a wormor a butterflyor whatever. It isn't until disaster almost stikes and they are saved by a toad that Milton, Rupert and Lydia realize that private ownership isn't that important. Whether grumbling for the sake of being difficult or dancing with delight, Lionni's frogs spring to life. Collages of marbled-textured paper, all in cool, crisp, spring-like colors against a stark white background, are a perfect match for this story of selfishness on the pond, carried out in beautifully simple line and language. Trev Jones, "School Library Journal"

Cute story and illistrations
By Matt and Amy Snyder
Leo Lionni's books are all cute and fun to read. We bought this book because our child was given the stuffed frog when he was in the hospital. I'm a sucker for books that have character stuffed animals to hold while we're reading the book.

A story about sharing.
By Ann Marie Grumm
Bicker Bicker Bicker. That's what these three frogs do all day long. It's mine, it's mine, it's mine! Tragedy strikes and an old toad saves the day. The three frogs seem to grow up without even realizing it! An ideal read-aloud.

LIONNI GIVES US ANOTHER IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON WITH THIS ONE
By D. Blankenship
Leo Lionni has created another wonderful little lesson with this parable like story, "It's mine. His insight to human behavior and his ability to reduce very complicated problems down to a level that a small child can easily understand is one of his strongest, one of many, skills and he certainly kept true to his form with this little offering.

We have three little frogs, Milton, Rupert, and Lydia who live on a wonderful little island covered with ferns and smooth pebbles in the middle of Rainbow Pond. There are bugs to eat, sunshine to enjoy and a rather carefree life. All is well...or is it? Well, I have to report, and am sorry to do so, that all was not well because the three little frogs actually spent most of their days being quarrelsome and bickering, bickering and bickering. They did not want to share the nice pond, the island or even the nice fresh air.

One day a large toad showed up from the other side of the island and informed them that they were disturbing the peace of there entire little world, including his and that they must stop their fighting and arguing at once. Of course little frogs being what they are paid the toad no heed.

One day a storm came up. There was much rain and the water rose. The island slowly began sinking into the murky waters. The little frogs are losing it all; they are seemingly doomed! Their little world and possibly their lives were vanishing. Is there nothing that can save them?

Well of course there was, and through their being jerked from the jaws of disaster the learned that their little world was a very nice place indeed and that their constant arguing and attitude of mine, mine, mine was rather counter productive to a nice peaceful life.

The book is well illustrated with typical Lionni illustrations which anyone who is familiar with this author's work will know are very, very good. The text is simple and perfect for either the preschooler or first grader. It is a good beginning readier and an excellent group read where good lessons in life can be learned. Actually, we adults can learn from it too.

The latest scientific research on home birth, breastfeeding, sleep training, vaccines, and other key topics—to help parents make their own best-informed decisions.

In the era of questionable Internet "facts" and parental oversharing, it's more important than ever to find credible information on everything from prenatal vitamins to screen time. The good news is that parents and parents-to-be no longer need to rely on an opinionated mother-in-law about whether it’s OK to eat sushi in your third trimester, an old college roommate for sleep-training “rules,” or an online parenting group about how long you should breastfeed (there’s a vehement group for every opinion). Credible scientific studies are out there – and they’re “bottom-lined” in this book.

The ultimate resource for today’s science-minded generation, The Informed Parent was written for readers who prefer facts to “friendly advice,” and who prefer to make up their own minds, based on the latest findings as well as their own personal preferences. "In The Informed Parent, journalists Tara Haelle and Emily Willingham manage to answer everything a parent could possibly be worried about during pregnancy, birth, infancy, and toddlerhood. What makes this book different from every other book on this subject (and there are many) is that the authors take on not only the science of what concerns us, but encourage us to think along with them—giving us the tools to answer other questions in the future. It was like reading the answer sheet before the test."
--Paul Offit, MD, Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

"With The Informed Parent, Tara Haelle and Emily Willingham have gifted today’s neurotic parents with fuel - and ultimately antidote - for their obsessive researching. Unlike most parenting books, the authors never preach, condone or praise. Instead, they report the science on all possible parenting controversies in a lay-friendly (and often pithy) style, allowing the reader to come to her/his own conclusions. Well-written, impeccably researched, and brilliantly suited for millennial parents, The Informed Parent should be on the top of everyone’s baby shower list."
--Suzanne Barston, the "Fearless Formula Feeder" and author of Bottled Up: How the Way We Feed Babies Has Come to Define Motherhood, and Why It Shouldn't

“Is it confirmation bias to say that anyone who decides to look at scientific facts instead of hectoring parents is doing the world a service? If so, consider my opinion biased: This book will help a lot of folks!”
--Lenore Skenazy, founder of the book, blog and movement Free-Range Kids

"As a mom, I can confidently say that The Informed Parent will be a lifesaver for all moms and dads going through the anxiety and excitement of raising a young child. From autism to organic food, the authors demystify modern parents’ most prevalent fears for the first four years, and effectively arm them with a critical thinking cap for years to come. If you’re tired of the mommy (and daddy) wars, or simply need help separating the credible wheat from the misinformation chaff on the internet, look no further."
--Kavin Senapathy, science advocate and author of The Fear Babe
“Accessible and informative…For anyone headed into parenthood, this is a must-read, as it answers so many questions new parents are bound to ask.”

"The book shines with clear explanations of the reasoning behind common hospital practices such as labor induction, vitamin K shots, and taking Apgar scores, including up-to-date summaries of the sometimes overwhelming-data surrounding giving birth and infant care choices. Subjects of controversy, such as allergies and sleep training, receive in-depth, scientifically minded treatment."

Introduction

Based on persistent headlines about the “mommy wars,” you could conclude that a visit to your local playground or a mom’s group outing might require decking yourself out head to toe in Kevlar. But the reality on the ground is different. There is no war, and we’d like to see that metaphor retired entirely for anything but, well, war.

There is, however, a whole lot of bias and judgment. All the time, every second, judging is the background noise of our social interactions. In the parenting arena, that judgment feels—and is—very, very personal. Of all the judgy noise around us, parenting criticism comes through loudly and clearly, a painful signal that elicits defensiveness and anger. Passing judgment on another parent, especially when that judgment is grounded in a “philosophy” of some kind, is a rude and nosy and even hostile thing to do. It’s one reason that some of us rarely do it in our face‑to‑face interactions. But that doesn’t mean we’re not thinking it. And a lot of the time, what we are thinking or another parent is thinking has little to do with what the latest research says.

Of course, it’s not a war. It’s human . . . humans raising other humans. Not one thing we do nor one philosophy we follow will guarantee the outcome we intend. We don’t even need science, for once, to tell us that.

But science is useful, because the practice of science produces data instead of anecdote—data we can use for evidence-based decision-making as parents. In this book, we look at what science has to say at the various crossroads parents encounter, from vaccines to attachment parenting to circumcision to screen time. We don’t dole out a lot of advice—after all, we don’t know you or your family and can’t say which route would be best for you and your child. But we give you the scientific information you need to map your own path. And here and there, we divulge what we ended up doing, which may not have been terribly scientific at the time.

We take on questions like: Should we circumcise our son? Is any sleep-training approach okay? Should I buy conventional or organic food? Is formula all right, because breastfeeding is just not for me? Is home birth ever a safe option? Does too much screen time harm children, and what is “too much” anyway? This book gives you the tools you need to decide, not within the framework of a parenting philosophy but within the framework of interpreting science for your family’s unique situation.

Perhaps the most important of these tools is understanding how to decipher the evidence. We don’t tell you what to do, because how you use the evidence depends on your specific circumstances. We work hard to limit or expose bias—yours, ours, theirs. As humans, we commonly overlook gaps in logic and ignore evidence that counters our existing beliefs and expectations. No one, including scientists, is immune to the mistakes in interpretation that all of us make when assessing evidence. As we dig into data, we note the traps to watch out for as you weigh research findings in the context of your personal needs.

Mistaking correlation for causation is one of the most common cognitive errors because the human mind seeks patterns and sees relationships in coincidence. That tendency is useful when your friend goes missing at the same time a lion is sighted near your village, and you then are on alert for lions. But it can mislead when the apparent associations are more subtle. Just because organic food purchases have increased at a similar rate as autism diagnoses over the past decade, for example, doesn’t mean they’re related.

Another common thinking trap is confirmation bias, which leads us toward information confirming what we already think and turns us away from what contradicts our beliefs. Countering this bias requires playing devil’s advocate with yourself and fighting your natural defensive reaction when evidence goes against a deeply held belief. Be on the lookout: confirmation bias might take hold as you read this book, often taking the form of cherry-picking data that conforms to what you believe. Even if you acknowledge the data, you might be inclined to diminish its relevance or ignore a larger consensus of data. We try to help by representing the entire cherry tree, if you will, in each chapter. We also focus on evidence from research, not anecdotes (even though we share a few from our own lives). As a common saying goes, the plural of “anecdote” is not data.

Some kinds of research carry greater weight than others. The gold standard is the randomized controlled trial, in which neither researchers nor patients know who’s receiving what intervention. This study design is intended to erase many of the problems of bias. Other kinds of clinical research include retrospective studies, taking a look back at already collected data and seeing what patterns emerge. But because these investigations weren’t controlled or planned ahead of time, the evidence they yield will be subject to caveats. And then some scientific publications aren’t based on original work at all but instead synthesize existing findings in a subject area. These systematic reviews and meta-analyses are great for getting a perspective of the state of the science, but because the authors select what to search for and include, they can be subject to bias too. The best ones give an assessment of the bias in the studies they evaluate and rate the evidence on a standardized scale. For this reason, we frequently describe the types of studies we’re discussing.

Finally, accept the fact that you (and we) probably are overestimating how much you (and we) know and understand. No matter how nice and unassuming you might be or how supersmart you are, you and the rest of us are all subject to superiority bias, known as the Dunning–Kruger effect. In short, it’s our tendency to overrate ourselves while underrating others. Remember how we find ourselves making comparisons to the Joneses and judging each other’s parenting styles, our own most favorably? We’re Dunning–Kruger-ing all over the place when we do that. If most of us are average parents, then most of us are not superior to other parents. What most of us are, though, is hoping to be the best parent we can be in the only situation that matters: for our children. You’re the only parent you need to worry about, and we want this book to help you be the best evidence-based parent you can be.

We hope this book will save you from the danger of Dunning–Kruger, but we also hope it helps you navigate some of the knottiest parenting questions we face today. Our goal is to place the strongest evidence in front of you, explained in a way you can understand, so that you can accurately decide what’s best for you and your family.

A Note on Terminology

We are aware of the developmental distinctions between the embryo and the fetus. In some cases, we use both terms when both stages are relevant, but in others, for brevity and to avoid repetition, we default to “fetus” or “fetal.” The word “data” is treated as a plural noun because it represents two or more pieces of information from a study. The term “birth defect” carries obvious negative onnotations, and we have sought to diminish the possibility of adding stigma by instead using the term “congenital anomaly.”

Dispelling myths about pregnancy and raising a child
By Michael the Skeptic
Note: I received a pre-release copy of this book, on which this review is based. It is possible that there have been some editorial or other changes in the released version.

There are innumerable myths and tropes about raising children. My mother used to tell me to not go into the pool until 30 minutes (or some random number) after I ate; and she always told me I'd catch the flu or a cold if I didn't put on a jacket during winter. Of course, neither are science based, and neither are "facts."

But those were innocuous little myths. I don't like being all that cold, so putting on a coat isn't the worst thing ever.

Unfortunately, some myths about parenting and raising children are dangerous. The whole "vaccines cause XYZ" myths that have infected the internet have caused some drops in vaccination, especially amongst those who should know better. And this is where this book becomes a valuable tool for "science based parenting."

Tara Haelle and Emily Willingham are notable science authors who have focused on topics that are important today. Dr. Willingham has written extensively about autism, I don't think I'm exaggerating to say that she is one of the top science journalist with respect to autism and autism related issues. Ms. Haelle writes extensively about parenting issues, from vaccinations to breast feeding.

Both use extensive citations and scientific knowledge in their writing. What they write often represents the best thinking in a field. Not that I advocate for the Argument from Authority, but when an authority uses real scientific evidence, the authority becomes the expert.

The Informed Parent continues their writing tradition. Yes, the book is "science-y." But it is my opinion that science should not be scary. It should do what it's supposed to do, answer questions through a logical manner about our natural universe. Or how we raise our children.

Haelle and Willingham jump right into the fray with their first chapter, basically on what a mother needs to do for her developing fetus. For example, Vitamin D is all the rage in the supplement world. But, generally there isn't an issue with vitamin D levels in the developed world. And, high quality medical research has shown us that vitamin D supplementation has no effect on maternal or newborn outcomes.

I could spend two hours writing about every topic they covered, but it is literally from A to Z on the list of issues. I think you could read this book cover to cover and use it as a resource, or just use it as a well sourced and written encyclopedia of issues regarding pregnancy, birth and raising the child.

As a vaccine advocate, my favorite part of the book is all about vaccines. They look at schedules, rumors, history, myths, science, and just about any consideration one might have about vaccines. They do it in a Q&A format partially, so you can read, without all of the yelling and screaming on the internet, the scientific facts about vaccines.

This is one of the best books about parenting. I remember my wife reading the semi-official manual of pregnancy, "What to Expect when you're Expecting." If this book were available back then, I would have given her this one too. Because we had a short, but intense, set of arguments regarding vaccinating our daughters, and I lacked a lot of information that I have now, especially from a book like this one. Yeah, our daughters are fully vaccinated.

I generally don't review books, because I usually read them months after they came out, and no one wants to read a six month old review. But in this case, I was excited about this book. I'm glad I got to read it. And if you're expecting or have an infant, get this book. It can help you relax and do the right things.

A must read for first time parents, a great "continuing education" for seasoned parents
By GennaH
When you are the mother of a large family, it's easy to be skeptical about how much you are going to learn from any new book about babies. This book is, beyond a doubt, an exception to that rule. Ms. Haelle and Dr. Willingham do a phenomenal job covering a breadth of topics that is nearly overwhelming. From drinking in pregnancy to home birth and beyond, the authors take the most important points present in the literature and make them accessible to the savvy parent who wants more information than is often given.

If there was one improvement I would have suggested, I feel that the authors could have encouraged greater wariness regarding home birth. As someone whose home birth midwife committed negligence, I wish that more detail had been given in terms of properly vetting care providers. However it is one area of disagreement in an otherwise excellent book.

Evidence based parenting
By Nicole Hubbell
If you want to make informed parenting decisions based on what the scientific evidence says, this is the book for you!
This will be my go-to book recommendation for new parents from now on. It doesn't get any better than evidence based!

A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918, by G.J. Meyer

Drawing on exhaustive research, this remarkable, intimate account tells the story of how World War I reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed twenty million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today.

On a summer day in 1914, a nineteen-year-old Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. While the world slumbered, monumental forces were shaken. In less than a month, a combination of ambition, deceit, fear, jealousy, missed opportunities, and miscalculation sent Austro-Hungarian troops marching into Serbia, German troops streaming toward Paris, and a vast Russian army into war, with England as its ally. As crowds cheered their armies on, no one could guess what lay ahead: four long years of slaughter, physical and moral exhaustion, and the near collapse of a civilization that until 1914 had dominated the globe.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Meyer sets out to integrate the war's discrete elements into a single work of popular history and delivers a worthy counterpoint to Hew Strachan's magisterial three-volume scholarly project, The First World War. A journalist and author (Executive Blues), Meyer doesn't offer original synthesis or analysis, but he does bring a clear, economical style to the war's beginnings; the gridlock produced by the successes and failures of both sides; the divided military and political counsels that hobbled efforts at resolving operational and diplomatic stalemates; and above all the constant carnage, on a scale that staggers the imagination. Meyer provides brief, useful background on subjects from the Armenian genocide to the Alsace-Lorraine question—topics he considers crucial to an understanding of the war, but too cursorily explained in most popular histories. Correspondingly, he blends "foreground, background, and sidelights" to highlight the complex interactions of apparently unconnected events behind the four-year catastrophic war that destroyed a world and defined a century. Constructing a readable, coherent text in that format is a demanding challenge, accomplished with brio. (May 30)

From Booklist
One only has to look at a few of today's "hotspots" (the Balkans and the Middle East) to realize that World War I's effects remain a determining factor in international relations. It may seem impossible to write an "intimate" account of such a global catastrophe, but Meyer has succeeded in doing just that: a masterful narrative history that eloquently conveys the sense of a civilization engaged in massive self-destruction, while its leaders, blinded by hubris, nationalism, or outright ignorance, led the charge. Although Meyer pays ample attention to the broad themes of causation and military strategies, he consistently reminds us that the war was a compilation of millions of individual tragedies. He captures the horror and futility of trench warfare, the slaughter at Gallipoli, and the genocide of Armenians as experienced by those who were there. Meyer also offers interesting and controversial insights into the motivations of many of the key participants. This is an outstanding survey of a cataclysm that still casts a shadow over world affairs. Jay Freeman

Review
"A World Undone is an original and very readable account of one of the most significant and often misunderstood events of the last century. With an historians eye for clear headed analysis and a storytellers talent for detail and narrative, G.J Meyer presents a compelling account of the blunders that produced the world's first "great war" and set the stage for many of the tragic events that followed." —Steve Gillon, Resident Historian, The History Channel

"This is one of those books where you read every page.... Meyer organizes his book chronologically, and accompanies each chapter with a short background essay.... [A World Undone] has the very best qualities for this kind of comprehensive approach: a gift for compression and an eye for the telling detail." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“A comprehensive history aimed at the general reader....You finish this book feeling you’ve learned everything anyone reasonably needs to know about The Great War.” —Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

“Meyer breathes life into the human story within the Great War. He provides in-depth profiles of many of the political and military leaders of that era, and explains why they were so important....This is a literary vision of WWI that few of us have ever encountered. Simply put, this is historical reporting at its best.” —Smoky Mountain Sentinel

“Thundering, magnificent...this is a book of true greatness that prompts moments of sheer joy and pleasure. Researched to last possible dot...It will earn generations of admirers.” —Washington Times

"Especially suited for the interested American reader…. Meyer's sketches of the British Cabinet, the Russian Empire, the aging Austro-Hungarian Empire, the leaders of Prussia with their newly minted swagger, are lifelike and plausible. His account of the tragic folly of Gallipoli is masterful…. It should go without saying that in 2006 … [A World Undone] has an instructive value that can scarely be measured."—Los Angeles Times

"Accomplished with brio... [Meyer] blends 'foreground, background, and sidelights' to highlight the complex interactions of apparently unconnected events behind the four-year catastrophic war that destroyed a world and defined a century."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

An excellent lesson of history
By Kindle Customer
After reading a book on WWII, had to delve into the rest of the story. One might conclude that the 20 years between these wars was nothing but a pause between a continuous war. This book makes that a reality. It also brings to light how these wars have impacted our lives today. Much of the turbulence in the world today are the aftershocks of the 2 world wars. This book really filled in the voids of the WWII book.

Really Well Done; Creative; Shallow in Spots
By Dr. Philip J. Kinsler
G. W. Meyer takes on an enormous task in this book. He tries to tell not just what happened leading up to and through WWI, but the important historical background to give the events context. He pairs a Background chapter with what we can call each 'Events' chapter. This is an extremely creative way to write about what is already a huge tableau. It provides the unfamiliar reader some context, but is inevitably frustrating to those who have gone deeper. By the structure of the work, Meyer has taken on the task, for example, of summarizing the over 1000 year history of the Hapsburg Empire in ten or fifteen pages. So, over-generalizations and the occasional plain error creep in. For an example, at one point Meyer states that Russia had never been made to compromise with other European states--apparently glossing over their defeats by Napoleon and the entire Crimean War. These grate on the reader who has read more on each of these Background chapters.

That being said, in a book for a general audience for whom this is perhaps their first introduction to European history of the period, this is an enormous achievement. Meyer takes a lens from far above what is happening, attempting to show the over-arching reasons why certain things happened. He is more likely to discuss the idea of Ludendorff creating a flexible defense, rather than having troops in a rigid and fixed front line, than he is to talk about what happened at a certain hill or dale. You get the overview--why were the Germans almost successful in 1918 after years of stalemate--rather than they took this town or this fort. When a city is mentioned, he tells you why this place was important. For example, Amiens is where most of the French Railways came together and had the town been lost, France would not have been able to move troops and might have needed an armistice.

The book reads easily and crisply. Meyer never loses sight of the enormous human cost of each campaign, and often puts this in a modern context--Losses for both sides in Passchendale were 3 times or 6 times (the detail escapes me at this moment) what the U.S. lost in the entire Vietnam War. He provides interesting and useful character sketches of the major players, each of whom has of course spawned multiple full length biographies.

If you've done no reading on this subject, this book is highly recommended. I passed it on to my wife who is explicitly NOT interested in history, thinking that this way of telling the story of the cosmic changes wrought by this period might actually grab her.

For those who want to go deeper, certainly Barbara Tuchman's 'Guns of August' is a masterpiece. John Keegan's 'The First World War' is excellent on the military side. For those who are interested in how and why the apparently mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed, Frederic Morton has two wonderful books, 'A Nervous Splendor' covering the late 1800's, and 'Thunder at Twilight' covering that Empire in 1913-14.

World War I was the death knell of one kind of civilization and the launching of several competing models of other ways to organize a national community. It deserves study, and this work is an excellent start.

Great overview of World War I
By Mike From Mesa
Like most people today World War II has always been more immediate to me than World War I. It is not a matter of the years' removal from the war as much as the events themselves. The immediate causes of World War II were clear from the rise of Nazism in Germany to the invasion and attempted subjugation of China by Japan while the causes of World War I were more obscure. Further, the results of the second war, from the division of Europe through the rise of an essentially unarmed Japan, are still part of yesterday's headlines while the immediate results of World War I (the Weimar Republic, the occupation of the Rhineland, the Free City of Danzig) are essentially hidden in the mists of history. Because of this I have long looked for a clear explanation for the start of World War I as well as an overview of the war itself.

I had long heard about the terrible loss of life in that war without really having a good understanding of the "hows" and "whys" of the war itself. Added to this problem was my lack of understanding of exactly how the old structure of Europe, now long gone, either caused or contributed to the causes of this war. I had read other books to try to understand this terrible tragedy (The Guns of August and The Zimmerman Telegram by Barbara Tuchman, World War I by John Keegan and others) but never felt as though I had an understanding of the events until I finally I found Mr Meyer's wonderful book. First I need to state that this review is for the Kindle version of A World Undone and some of these comments may not apply to the print version.

As my interest was for more of an overview of the war rather than a detailed account of the battles this book served my needs perfectly. It covered the war from the assassination that triggered it through the collapse of the German Army in 1918 without ever descending into the troop movement details more than absolutely necessary. All the important battles are covered as are the political events behind them but, just as importantly, it covers the backgrounds of the people and political entities involved so as to make the actual events much more understandable.

The trigger for the war was the assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists. Why was Serbia so antagonistic toward the Austro-Hungarian Empire? And why were the Balkans such an unstable area? These questions, and more, were covered in the background chapter on Serbia.

Why was no one able to stop the war from actually starting, given the month and more between the assassination and the declarations of war? Explained in the first chapters of this book.

Why was there such bad blood between the German and French/British governments? Explained in the background chapter on the Hohenzollerns.

Why was the Austro-Hungarian Empire so weak? Explained in the background chapter on the Hapsburgs.

Why did the war go on for so long? And why were both the British and French generals unable to react more quickly? Explained in the background chapters on the British and French generals. And so on throughout the book.

In short this book provided me with a level of background detail that allowed me to understand the events that were happening at that time. No other book on World War I that I had read gave me anything as nearly complete and hence no other book gave me the ability to properly understand what happened.

The Kindle version of this book, however, is not perfect and there are some issues that I feel need to be mentioned. There are not enough maps to properly explain the troop movements that are described and to display the front lines. The maps that are included are far too small to be of any help and cannot be enlarged on the Kindle. Even when viewed on the iPad, where the maps can be enlarged, the detail is insufficient to really see anything. I had to go to John Keegan's book on World War I and use the maps there to make any sense of some of the battles. Similarly the photos that are included in the book are too few and too small to be of much help as well as being only individual portraits and hence not showing anything of importance beyond the images of the people described.

But these limitations should not prevent anyone who has an interest in understanding World War I from buying this book. It is, quite simply, the best book on the period that I have ever read unless someone wants much more detail on the individual battles and troop movements. If you want battle details John Keegan's book might be better, but as an overview of the war this book is the best I have ever seen.

Highly recommended.

"The book is a masterful primer for all clinicians--especially those of us hoping to navigate the transition from volume-based healthcare to value-based healthcare without running aground."
Atul Gawande, MD, MPH
Surgeon, Professor, and author ofBeing Mortal and The Checklist Manifesto

"This book is an instant classic. It masterfully summarizes and makes accessible a mountain of relevant health care delivery research. And it gives front-line clinicians and other health care leaders a raft of practical ideas to help make care dramatically safer, more patient-focused, and more affordable."
Donald Berwick, MD
President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement

"What is value? Why is it so hard to achieve in healthcare, when it is the standard in most other industries? How can we overcome the obstacles and achieve a value-based system? With dozens of real-life stories of encounters with our broken health system, this book offers valuable insights into these questions and more. It is a must-read for everyone from student to frontline clinician to system leader who wants to contribute to the successful transformation to value-based care."
Vivian Lee, PhD, MD, MBA
CEO, University of Utah Healthcare

"The authors of this book have done a superlative job in covering critical topics relating to healthcare costs and value. They have successfully conducted a "root cause analysis" of the problem, and have identified and discussed many contributing factors. But most importantly, they have not just thrown up their hands in frustration, but instead have nicely detailed the solutions and tools that are being applied - andmust be expanded and extended - to treat this critical problem."Steven Weinberger, MDExecutive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, American College of Physicians

"Remarkably given the importance of this issue, until now, we lacked a roadmap to attack it. With this book, we now have one. That makes it essential reading for everyone who care about making our system better."Robert Wachter, MDProfessor and Associate Chair of Department of Medicine, UCSFAuthor of The Digital Doctor and Understanding Patient Safety

"Must Read" for anyone interested in Healthcare Reimbursement
By Kurt and Sarah Eaton
Understanding Value-Based Healthcare is precisely the tool needed to help physicians and other healthcare providers understand the impending changes in the current healthcare reimbursement model and navigate these changes successfully. This easy-to-follow book is concise, well-referenced and is organized in a manner that makes following the often complex subject matter almost effortless. I recommend this book highly and without reservation to anyone interested in healthcare reimbursement, from either the payer or provider side of the equation.

Well-written and practical primer for value-based healthcare
By Ryan
Great book for anyone looking to learn more about the healthcare industry as it continues to evolve from fee-for-service to fee-for-value. As some reviewers have mentioned, there is not necessarily anything "new" if you've been doing this for awhile, but the authors do an excellent job highlighting the key issues for a general audience. I really enjoyed reading the "Costs of Care" stories, as they are very true to form, both from the patient and physician perspective. Rarely do I read a textbook cover to cover, but this one was just too good that I had a hard time putting it down. I would also highly recommend this as a textbook in applicable educational programs (i.e. health informatics, health economics, managed care, healthcare finance, etc.)
