Found the Little Man's House at Disneyland!

A piece of Disneyland history for 1950's young audiences!

This book was the centerpiece of an exhibit at the recent D23 Expo as part of the 60th Anniversary Disneyland celebration. There was an ongoing video of John Lasseter (of Pixar fame) reading the book aloud, as well as an original copy of the book from Disney's archives on display, and a sign which told of the book's history. I'm going to now share the text from that sign with you all, so that you, too, can be aware of the history of this book. Certainly it doesn't have the popular attractions which came up after 1955, but it was a great way to build the audience excitement in preparation for the opening day of Disneyland.

"Beginning October 27, 1954, and continuing through subsequent progress reports, the television-viewing public was able to watch Disneyland come to life on 180 acres of orange groves and walnut trees through Walt's landmark weekly anthology show. But as Disneyland neared opening on July 17, 1955, Walt and his artists took a more whimsical approach to the story of the creation of the magical park. With "Pictures by The Walt Disney Studio," young readers - and the young at heart - would meet Patric Begorra, the "Little Man of Disneyland."

It's the charming story of Patrick, a leprechaun who lives in a half-hidden small house at the roots of one of those Anaheim orange trees. His is a quiet life, until Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy turn up with shovels in hand, ready to start moving the trees so they can build "a wonderful place called Disneyland... with all sorts of marvelous things for fun." Patrick doesn't believe them, so the trio takes him on a helicopter ride back to the Studio (which, by the way, was exactly how Walt traveled back and forth from Burbank). They visit the Disneyland planning room, complete with blueprints, drawings, and concept paintings (all based on real Disneyland art). Patrick is impressed, and agrees to let them build the Park - as long as he can live there when it's finished.

In fanciful full-color pictures by Dick Kelsey, Disneyland begins to take shape - just as it did on the grounds of those original orange groves. The illustrations are authentic: Richmond Kelsey joined Disney in 1940, with credits as an animator, art director, and writer, working on Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Make Mine Music, So Dear to My Heart, and Alice in Wonderland. He was also one of Disneyland's designers.

When the time comes to move the tree in which Patrick lives, Mickey offers to help the leprechaun build a new home. Patrick politely declines, and after all the workers go home, he moves into a secret spot known only to him... and, perhaps, to a few young readers of Walt Disney's Little Man of Disneyland who have kept their eyes - and imagination - open to wonder as they visit "The Happiest Place On Earth."

Walt Disney's Little Man of Disneyland was published in 1955 as "A Mickey Mouse Club Book" in Simon & Schuster's Little Golden Book series. It was written by editor Jane Werner (as "Annie North Bedford"), with pictures by the Walt Disney Studio, adapted by Dick Kelsey."

An Excellent Re-release of an Excellent Childrens Book

This is a great little book. I'm 30 years old, and have a slightly unhealthy fascination with Disney history. So I was thrilled to see this one re-released. This also helped me decide to start a collection of books for my future kids. What was even more thrilling was to see Disney place Patricks house in Disneyland near the Indiana Jones Adventure. It's the little things like that which Disney does that put a smile on my face.

About the Author
Giacomo Casanova was born in Venice in 1725. His parents, both actors, wanted him to become a priest, but their hopes were dashed when, at sixteen, he was expelled from seminary for immoral misconduct. Probably best-known for his reputation as a womanizer, Casanova was in turn a secretary, a soldier in the Venetian army, a preacher, an alchemist, a gambler, a violinist, a lottery director, and a spy. He translated Homer's Iliad into Italian and collaborated with Da Ponte on the libretto for Mozart's Don Giovanni. He retired in 1785 to the castle of a friend -- Count Waldstein of Bohemia -- in order to write his memoirs.

The Casanova you DON'T KNOW!

I came to this book via reading about the 18th century Scottish economist John Law who ran the FRENCH economy into the ground with the invention of paper money. So what does Casanova have to do with that? Turns out Casanova helped rescue the French economy after having escaped from prison in Venice. REALLY!
As an escape adventure, this one is great, and probably almost all true. You'll never visit the Serene Republic again and pass the Bridge of Sighs without lingering for a moment to consider the hell Casanova lived through while imprisoned in this annex of the Ducal Palace. What I really enjoyed about this memoir is hearing Casanova's "voice" come down through the ages. His "take" on life is continually interesting, and worth further reflection. He was not merely a shallow latin lover gigolo which I had previously thought him to be. He was a real intellectual and a complex mix of realist, and romantic. A "guy's guy" it turns out. The book is fairly short, but a breathless read as you share Casanova's sense of claustrophobia and pray with him that he can effect his escape from "the leads." Great stuff!

A good read!

I find myself wondering how to review a book which is a translation. The story itself is all the work of Casanova himself, whereas the translation is what has enabled me to read it. The tale is an unusual one, of the incarceration of a man known better for the exploits of his later life. He is thrown into a prison in the company of some bizarre fellow prisoners and wardens. It's the story of the ingenuity he used to effect an escape... eventually!

I found the old style of the language a little difficult to get to grips with. The sentences were, to my modern ear, over long and complex, but this was the style at the time. The translator has enabled this to be accessible today and it's certainly a good read.

About the Author

Aaron Blecha is an artist who creates funny characters and illustrates humorous books, including two series, George Brown, Class Clown and Shark School. Aaron was raised by giant squid in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He now lives with his family by the south English seaside. This is the first book he's written and illustrated.

Fun!

Goodnight, Grizzle Grump! is a fun read aloud and an excellent choice for story time. While the illustrations are cute, cartoony, and definitely engaging, it's the text that brings the fun with this one. Blecha tells the story of this Grizzly who just wants to go to sleep with a seasoned storyteller's flair,from his description of bear's routine that he follows each time he tries to sleep, to his frustration with all the noise. Kids will delight in following along as bear repeatedly teeters, totters, wiggles, wobbles, flips and flops before finally snoring away. The payoff at the end comes when Grizzle Grump's snores start to irritate all the other animals. I will admit that I had a hard time getting this ending to present correctly to an audience thanks to one small illustration that the kids just weren't catching. After a bit of practice though, the ending came through with all of its humor, and laughs were shared all around.

Goodnight, Grizzle Grump! is an excellent choice for any bear themed story time thanks to its vibrant, animated illustrations and some very fun writing. Don't miss this story time must have!

I'm always on the hunt for soccer info my nephew can use... I'm a little too old to try to rekindle a soccer career :) The book is laid out well with plenty of tips for super soccer fans to sink their teeth into. I love how Mirsad doesn't talk down to you, but always goes out of his way to explain something that you might not understand the first time. Plus, the book is filled with lots of little pointers that you can tell come directly from experience...the hardest teacher of all :)

Most importantly, Mirsad sets forth the personal

with knees bent. The ball must be kept close
at all times for maximum control. Moves can
be exaggerated and performed creatively to
confuse the opponent.

About the Author
Jan Maher is a writer and educator whose works include several plays, Heaven, Indiana (a novel), and History in the Present Tense (coauthored with Douglas Selwyn, Heinemann 2003). She is Adjunct Professor of education at Antioch University and Heritage University, both in Seattle.

Douglas Selwyn taught in the Seattle Public Schools for more than fifteen years. He is currently a professor of education at Antioch University and works as an educational consultant. His previous publications include Living History in the Classroom (Zephyr, 1993); and an NCSS bulletin, Arts & Humanities in the Social Studies (1995).

Teaching history made fun, accessible and relevant

In "History in the Present Tense," Doug Selwyn and Jan Maher - both accomplished writers and educators - have produced a completely accessible, practical, insightful and FUN book about how to engage students in making, recording and analyzing history.

Their original lessons emphasize multiple perspectives and authentic tasks, and challenge young people to think critically about real world issues.

Thoughtful questions, suggested resources and sample handouts are included. The lessons have been field tested by teachers (like me), enabling readers to gain from the experiences and modifications of teachers in a variety of settings.

As a middle school history teacher, I was most impressed by the authors' ability to incorporate what it means to think and work like a historian: the role of lenses in viewing events, the importance of corroborating evidence, the privileging of some accounts over others, and the roles of the media and textbooks in influencing our interpretations of events.

This book is a "must-have" for novice and experienced teachers who seek to learn and teach history in hands-on, relevant and stimulating ways... from investigative reporting to policy making to documentary production.

A Must Have for Social Studies Teachers

Engaging students in the classroom and helping them draw connections between their own lives and what they are learning are two of the biggest challenges for any teacher, novice or otherwise. This is often doubly true in a history classroom.

History in the Present Tense is an incredible resource for any Social Studies Teacher. It offers a range of lessons that help students draw connections between history and the present, are focused on student inquiry, and encourage students to count on each as resources. The lessons encourage students to become active participants in the classroom, not just passive absorbers of information.

This book is easy to use and the activities can be adapted to almost any age level.

Excellent Overview of ES&H

I found this book to be an excellent review of the field of environmental health and safety. It is balanced between the sometimes separate fields of environmental health and occupational health and safety. The book manages to cover both areas very well. Of the books I have read and used, this is probably the best combined coverage of the entire ES&H field. A wealth of helpful examples are included so the reader can adapt them for their own needs. Definitely a worthwhile book for professionals and students dealing with these issues to own.

5+ Intelligently Arousing Stars

Forced Series Box Set has 5 extremely hot short novellas.
They were full of forbidden, kinky, dirty stories. BUT...They had more than that. Each story has their own twists. They were crafted beautifully and intelligently.
Celia Aaron managed to surprise me even with short stories.
These stories were more different than all I've read. These novellas have plot, twist and character improvement in a way.
All I can say is: Celia Aaron knows what she's doing.

1) Forced by the Kingpin

It's between Jessica, Jackson and Alexi. Jessica is a journalist who writes about the mobster in the city. And when she wrote something so close to the truth...Well, she needs some lessons from hot mobster Alexi and the police officer Jackson.

2) Forced by the Professor

Who can say no to the forbidden story between a teacher and a student?
Especially, if I assure you that it is hot.
Ms. Finnegan is pushing all the wrong(or maybe right) buttons of Professor Stevens. And that brought us hot sex with a pleasurable twist ;)

3) Forced by the Hitmen

When you opened your eyes two men are waiting for you, kidnapping you. And with some luck, they give you the best sex ever! Umm...Should this be a bad situation?
This short story was my fav in all 5. Since I love them all, I think this must be something, right?

Step-sibling relationship, some D/s actions, stripper, club...Do I need to say more?
It was hot and quick read. But I wanted more in this novella. Something was missing in this one. Maybe after reading all three stories with unexpected twists I was hoping more.
But surely, this one was very enjoyable.

5) Forced by the Quarterback

The best friend of the brother, secret fantasies and lots of lust...And a twist...
Celia Aaron found a way to put so many things in a short story and I loved her for it! This one was the last novella in the boxset and it was equally hot!

I didn't sleep till 4 am in the morning to finish this box set and it was worth it!
If you're after smartly created hot read go for it! This has five instead of one ;)

The BEST resource for AMD Info!!!

This book was a very easy read. A "must have" source of information if you've just been told you or a family member has AMD. There is also information about nutrition which is not only helpful for eye health but TOTAL body health as well. In the back of the book Dr. Samuel speaks about what you can do to start protecting your vision today... get on an eye vitamin. He mentions a couple different choices for comparison. I started taking the EyeScience - Macular Health Formula from EyeScience.com because they have more ingredients and a free trial.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

Was diagnosed 3 months ago with AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) so ordered 3 books on the subject to better understand the road ahead. This book, by Dr. Samuel, provides a comprehensive overview of what AMD is, and what to expect down the road. It also states clearly what vitamins and food products assist in slowing down AMD. Would recommend it for any patients or loved ones who need a better understanding of this debilitating affliction.

Great Resource for Everyone interested in Macular Degeneration

As a registered nurse I found it very refreshing to hear from a medical doctor about the importance of diet and nutrition and how it impacts our general health and the health of our eyes.

Dr. Samuel explains the role of inflammation in the development of macular degeneration and what we can do to reduce chronic inflammation through eating the right fats and carbohydrates.

I recommend this book to anyone who has macular degeneration, has a family member with AMD or anyone who wants to learn more about the prevention of AMD.
