Bit disappointed...

I'm so disappointed.
Here's why:
I had bought Harry Eastwood's other book ' Red Velvet and Chocolate Heartache' about a yr ago, and after i had baked 1 recipe from it (banana and zucchini bread), i was very eager to try the rest and initially had marked it a 5. Well, i won't go into everything i made but i had written a review for that also. I found they did not turn out right and they did not taste right. Then this book came out.
I LOVE French food and i was so pleased to see that she had posted calorie counts under each of the recipes. The recipes in themselves seemed great but again, another pet peeve is that there are not enough pictures. I know this is a personal preference, and i think i would not mind as much if what i had made first turned out to be a good recipe, but alas, i've yet again had a bad experience with a Harry Eastwood book.

I made the Raspberry Macarons. I read through the recipe twice, just to get a feel for it, because i know that macarons are supposed to be really difficult to make, but this recipe looked fairly simple so i decided to give it a go. I do not think the recipe went into enough instruction on how to make them properly, when it gives the instruction for "food colouring" and "paste is best", there are no quantities and in the actual instructions she doesn't specify how much she used either she just says "i like to use a lot of colour". Well, that's great, but how much?? I had to look it up online. I also had to look up online about where to actually find food colouring paste as i could not find it in any specialty shop OR supermarket. I wish she would have also told me to SIEVE the icing sugar and almond meal and when i put it into a piping bag, it was the wrong consistency, it was too runny. They did not turn out great at all and there was a lot of liquid left over and wasted.

Maybe i will change this review at some point after possibly making something else (madeleines maybe?). But after bad experiences with the other book and now this...I don't know...

I love this cookbook

I love this cookbook! I have read it from cover to cover multiple times. I love the fact that many recipes are less than ten ingredients and you can get many of them out of your garden! I did an impromptu four course meal for five completely from this book and pulled it off in about an hour. It was amazing! I move and travel extensively so I have managed to give away or store this book twice, so I am about to buy my third copy.

Harry Eastwood is a very creative chef and cookbook writer. She tries things and tests things that others don't even consider. I have read cookbooks all my life, and I have learned more from her than anyone else I have read in a long time. While a lot of her dishes are lower calorie or gluten free, they are all excellent in their own right so you never feel like you are missing out.

This is a good book for the beginning songwriter
There are obvious glitches in this book
'Not enough on how to write great lyrics, writing from title
Not enough on chord progressions
Seems to be a lot about the business side of songwritin

I would recommend books by Andrea Stolpe or Pat Pattison if you are really serious about songwiting as a profession

The Only Way to Build a Better Body

I sought more information on High Intensity training after reading a debate of volume training vs. High Intensity by Mike Mentzer and Dr. Stone in All Natural Muscular Development Magazine. Prior to reading the article I had not heard of High Intensity training. After reading the article I realized that I had no basic principles upon which I was building my training program. I would read an article in Flex and follow that, then another in MM2K and follow that; some routines produced results and some did not. I purchased the tape series and listened several times to each tape. I was apprehensive about trying the program because I too suffered from the notion that if I was not training 4 days a week for two hours I would lose my hard earned gains. Finally, I decided to follow the program and follow it exactly. I decided that even if the training program was wrong, I was better off having a rational basis for what I was doing and why I was doing it, then continuing to follow the next magazine article. The program presented also made a lot of sense. The results were nothing short of spectacular. For a 41 year old gu y I am very impressed. The information presented on the tapes is clear and easy to follow. I highly recommend this tape series to anyone who is serious about building a better body. Like me, it may also help you the think more critically about many other aspects of your life. Thanks Mike

Needed: less philosophy, more fitness. Otherwise, GREAT!

Mentzer's approach to strength building is exactly what we need - a true plan that really works! I've used this protocal now for almost 3 months and the results are fantastic. I am 52 and I have become more muscular now than ever in my life. What a relief to find out that you don't have to be a gym rat to achieve a physique that gets second looks.
A disappointment is the proportion of the tapes spent on philosophy. Only about half of the set concerns exercises and diet. I would have liked much more description of the exercises and why these particular routines were chosen. We are asked to have faith that they are the best. Incidently, having faith in what we are told is exactly what we are asked not to do in the philosophical Tape 1. I would describe the exercises in the sequencing chosen, however, as elegent. Only one suggestion from my experience - combine superslow cadence with High Intensity.
If you would like to build muscle, you won't find a more rational or efficient technique.

The oft-maligned and misunderstood Mentzer has created a masterpiece with these audiotapes, debunking those preaching the more-is-better nonsense. As for results, you will receive such if you follow the ideas contained inside. AMAZING.

This book is a must for any person especially those who claim they are the household of FAITH! It is time that people of THE MOST HIGH wake up. The evil that is and has been done to our people will be ABSOLUTELY unforgivable! It's one thing to do wrong and REPENT and stop but to continue as if you are god is WRONG,WRONG,WRONG. It is my hope that BLACK MEN all over the world come out of the DAMMED WORLD. It's on it's way to hell. I encourage professor griff because at least he is not a COWARD and lays down his life. I can only respect those who stand for the TRUTH!!!!!!!

Required Reading

I have Professor Griff's two other books and am looking forward to pouring through this volume. Check out his interviews on "The Alex Jones Show/Infowars." Of course his lectures on YouTube are heavily viewed and also must be pondered. I'd like to see some professionally done DVDs featuring the Professor; I'm sure hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers would agree. Do support Professor Griff. He represents all that is good about the human quest for knowledge and wisdom. Professor Griff and others like him will help liberate humanity. Closer to home, his contributions have been pivotal in the mass awakening that has gripped the USA. Professor Griff is a humanist whose deeds are a positive sign that We the People will win back the American republic from the foreign offshore globalist banking families.

Best historical novel I've read in 10 years

I've never been a fan of Follett, and picked this book up with some misgivings - anyone these days can try to do an "historical" novel with some quick sex, some fake archaic new-speak, and a TV-movie-miniseries concept of history. While there are some minor flaws in this book, its sweep, characterization, tensions, and love of its subject are simply riveting. I could not put the darned thing down and have lost sleep for a week compulsively page-turning. Follett, unbelievably, seems to have made little splash with this book when it first came out - more shame to the critics who missed a "Gone With the Wind" from a conventional thriller author.
His primary strength in the book is his magnificent characters. By the end, Prior Phillip, Aliena, Jack, Richard, "Witch" Ellen, William of Hamleigh, Waleran Bigod, and a host of supporting characters are as real as people you know. Their strengths and weaknesses feel as sound as earth. I've just reached the part where the Cathedral is finished, and its magnificent image, built in love, hardship, and devotion, colors the whole book like light through stained glass. And I suspect the ending will be as immensely "right" as the entire rest of the book in its proportion in spinning out complicated human lives and emotions.
Follett manages to write of an age of religious devotion without tumbling into the two pits - making fun of medieval Christian faith, or uncritically adopting it. An IMMENSELY satisfying read.
I could quibble with what I feel is some gratuitous sex, some slightly contrived plot twists, but that's like complaining about some flotsam in the river as you're going over Niagara.
DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK if you love wonderful story-spinning and history.

an excellent piece of historical fiction

I actually listened to this book on tape, while my wife read the paperback. Both of us loved it. I not only recommend the book, but also urge people to rent the Book on Tape version, narrated by David Case, whose acting and narrative talents shine through, bringing the various characters to life. (But still purchase the book from Amazon!) I came to Pillars of the Earth after spending about two solid years reading, in my spare time, nothing but medieval histories, with a focus on fourteenth century England and the Plantagenet kings. I had never before read a book by Follett, who I had assumed mass-produced pulp spy fiction. I only chose the book because of of my interest in medieval history. To my delight and surprise, I discovered the book to be a true work of literature, which might well still be read in 100 years. I found myself amazed by Follett's ability to create an extremely complex and compelling plot, with compelling characters, against a backdrop that seemed true to the histories I had been reading. The early twelfth century is a period neglected by us moderns; but it's one that's inherently interesting. Who, today, has even heard of King Stephen (who preceded the famous Henry II, immortalized twice by Peter O'Toole in the 1960s movies Beckett and Lion in Winter)? Because, in England at least, Stephen's reign was a time of virtual anarchy, Follett was able to use the period to create characters who demonstrate the brutal lengths to which people can go when unconstrained by law and an effective legal order. At the same time, though, he has created religious and other well-meaning characters who, if alien to us because of their belief in Hell and a God intervening almost minute-by-minute in human afairs, display courage and the best of intentions in the harsh face of barbarism. This juxtaposition of the brutal and the well-meaning makes for an interesting meditation on human nature and on the hope for the gradual further civilization of our species. His ultimate message is encouraging, though he certainly doesn't shrink from depicting the nastiness of which humans are capable. In short, the book is a marvelous piece of fiction, in which Follet has done an excellent job capturing the feeling of a distant and neglected period of history.

Not an Oprah follower, but I love this book

Personally, I don't place a lot of stock in Oprah's book club lottery. The instant stardom that placement on this reading list bestows authors isn't always, in my opinion, justified. That being said, this is a wonderful book.

Pillars is complex, moving and informative. The research was excellent, the characters are engaging and the story moves at a surprisingly quick pace for a novel of this length. The descriptions of the scenes, the completeness of the political interplay and the twists of the plot make this one of my favorite books of all time. Normally, I have little patience for historical fiction unless it brings something new or truly engaging to the table. Pillars certainly does that and more.

In other words, while there is no such thing as the perfect book, this one comes very close. My advice is simple...READ THIS BOOK -- YOU'LL LOVE IT!

But do yourself a small favor, go to the used bookstore or the library, this is not a new release and you can enjoy Follett's favorite work for a fraction of the cost. A quick search of Amazon shows dozens of options that don't have the Oprah name or any other bells and whistles that I'm sure are unneeded to enjoy this spectacular piece of fiction

Terrible..there's nothing to it!

8 pages? Really? I wish I had noticed that before I bought it, because I could have written this book myself in the time it takes to watch a single TV show.

For the price, I probably wouldn't have cared much if it had been good, but each prompt in this book is nothing more than a random sentence (many of which aren't even very interesting or thought-provoking). You could go to your bookshelf, randomly pick sentences from different books, and you'd have prompts like these. Most of the other writing prompt books I've bought have been 30-60 pages of well thought-out prompts, which seems appropriate for a 99 cent to $2.99 book. This was just a huge disappointment all around.

A very worthwhile book. The author spent a number of years living and working in S. Korea and spent time and effort learning about the society, culture and language. The novel tells a strong, interesting story about the children of foreign men and Korean women and how they are discriminated against and often abused by many full blooded Koreans who consider people of mixed blood to be of low caste and unworthy of citizenship. The book illustrates how these children are often caught up in human trafficking schemes and trapped in a life of poverty and prostitution.
This basic story is about a girl born to a Korean mother who was deserted by her American lover when his job assignment in Korea was over and he returned to the States. Years later he learns his Korean girlfriend gave birth to a daughter after he left the country. The story is filled with believable characters and situations that could have happened to any American male who spent time in Korea and had an affair with a local woman. How he reacts to this knowledge makes an interesting and informative tale.

The Curse of Having Mixed Blood in Asia

Of Mixed Blood deals with a very real problem in Asia, one mainly caused by Americans. Ron Penczak has woven a story that reveals this problem in a narrative that keeps the reader engaged. The believable story of Mike Temple, former Marine and government contractor in Korea during the 60's, takes us through his wild early years as a single man who "works hard and plays hard". The narrative remains taut and draws us in as Mike faces problems on the job. When he is attracted to beautiful Yun-Jin, who distrusts Americans, we are kept on edge wondering if he will succeed in gaining her trust. Eventually we are made a part of his struggle over which of the two women in his life he will choose. But the pivotal struggle occurs later in the book when Mike learns of a daughter he didn't know existed. Will his wife accept her? Will her mother allow her to leave Korea? Will she fit into American life? And the biggest question of all--what is the future of mixed blood Asians in their own countries and what can we do about it?

My favorite books are ones that entertain me

"Of Mixed Blood" is a novel that is full of interest and opens up a world about which I knew very little. There is conflict from the get-go to keep the reader interested, and Mike Temple’s experiences in Korea were very intriguing to me. The author obviously has full authority to tell this story, and the ‘realness’ of the details is testament to that. As a reader, I was willing to trust in the story-telling. My favorite books are ones that entertain me, but where I learn something, too, and this book accomplished that on multiple levels. I learned something about the political aspect of the US Government working with the Koreans, the cultural aspect of Korean customs, and the societal issues of mixed blood children in Korea. And all the while, I was entertained! Thanks for a great read!
