Duckworth has been honored by the American Music Society as one of Six Master Teachers in America. Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is an excellent treatise about how God has called His people, His church, to actually transform the world in which we live, making disciples of all nations, "on earth as it is in heaven". The author not only argues persuasively from scripture as well as history, he gives many examples from his own personal experience, and from the remarkable impact of Bethel Church in Redding, California. I heartily recommend this book.

IT MAKES ME WANNA SHOUT!

YES! Finishing this book made me want to shout, "HALLELUJAH!" It filled me with hope for the future and determination to seek God for His future plans for me.

Heavy Rain helped me understand why so many churches today, though well-meaning, are ineffective at carrying out the Great Commission. When they come into balance with the five-fold ministry of Ephesians 4, then all of the work can flow as God intended.

This book is worth your investment in both money and time. I know that I will read it again to glean all of its treasure.

Very good book on one piece flow and mfg. cell layout

This book contains a great deal of very useful information on creating, or revising, manufacturing cells to reduce waste and improve productivity. The book contains a cogent explanation of the advantages of replacing batch processing with one piece flow processes. It is particularly good at describing how to improve production floor layouts to reduce the number of workers needed to manufacture products while introducing one piece flow. The information is there, but the text could be much clearer. A valuable addition to Shigeo Shingo's books on manufacturing.

A start on one piece flow production cells

Book info : I read the 1st English edition that was published in 1992.

Pre required knowledge: SMED

Purchased price : USD 39,90

General : The book is not very easy to read, the information you need is there but the text could be much clearer. Also the writer must like abbreviations, because he uses them a lot. In the end they were starting to get annoying.

Book content:

The book has got 2 parts. Part I handles the basic theoretical part (44% of book) and has got exercises (12%) The first part gives an unclear overview of the theory and then continues using the theory in case studies. Part II (44%) gives 4 applications:

1 Colour Changeover Improvement at a plastics company

2. Establishing one-piece flow at the oriental motor company

3. Single delivery at Mynac clothing company

4. Reducing waste on printed circuit board component assembly lines at Kumamoto Electronics

Because I work in the food processing industry I found the case studies and the applications in part two difficult to understand.

Two other things I would like to point out are:

A. If you maintain the same level of production but decrease the lot size you get more setup time / changeover. Therefore the book can't avoid SMED en Zero changeover principles; actually quit a lot of the book is spend on this topic but I found Shingo's book on this topic much better.

B. While transforming the production process into U cells the writer adds new equipment to the lines / cells, sometimes up to twice as much, as if equipment is falling out of the sky!

This book does an excellent job of explaining how lean or Toyota Production System (TPS) cells are designed. It covers all of the principles and has many examples. If you are designing work cells or need to understand their design, this is a book you should read and keep handy.

Robert J. Corber is Associate Professor of American Studies and Lesbian and Gay Studies at Trinity College, Hartford. He is author of In the Name of National Security: Hitchcock, Homophobia, and the Political Construction of Gender in Postwar America (1993) and Homosexuality in Cold War America: Resistance and the Crisis of Masculinity (1997).

Stephen Valocchi is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Trinity College, Hartford. He has published widely on the welfare state and on social movements in the United States, in particular the gay liberation movement. His essays have appeared in Social Problems, Sociological Perspectives, and Critical Sociology.

A terrific resource.

I will admit that my review is a tad biased by the fact that Dr. Corber and Dr. Valocchi are my academic advisors; that being said, the strength of this book does not rely on their strengths, but rather the cross-disciplinary collection of work that they have brought together in _Queer Studies: An Interdisciplinary Reader_.
Corber and Valocchi's introduction gives a broad overview of the Queer Theory field. This overview is followed by a review of the criticism from more "established" schools of thought (i.e., feminism and the social sciences). This collection does not seek to rectify the critiques of those fields with Queer Theory; it simply draws attention to the current critiques. Corber and Valocchi offer these criticisms a basis for critical examination of their texts that the reader-- even a Queer Theory novice-- can then apply to the texts held within _Queer Studies_.
This collection is clearly designed to give classrooms a single text to work from when teaching queer studies. While a more advanced understanding of Queer Theory would require reading some of its founding works (e.g., Michel Foucault's _History of Sexuality Volume 1_, Judith P. Butler's _Gender Trouble_, Michael Warner's _The Trouble With Normal_, and etc.) this collection is helpful for the new student of queer theory.
_Queer Studies_ manages to be queer from cover to cover and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a broad overview of the field of Queer Theory.

About the Author
Graham Oakes helps people untangle complex technology, relationships, processes and governance. As an independent consultant, he helps organizations such as Sony Computer Entertainment, The Open University, the Council of Europe and the Port of Dover to define strategy, initiate projects and hence run those projects effectively. Prior to going independent, he was Director of Technology at Sapient Limited, where he ran the project review process for the UK Business Unit. Before that he was Head of Project Management for Psygnosis Ltd (a subsidiary of Sony), where he ran Independent Project Assurance teams working across the UK, Europe and the USA. Graham writes a regular column for EvaluationCentre.com (now part of the National Computer Centre), and occasional articles for publications such as the Financial Times, Free Software Magazine and Project magazine. He was a medallist in the British Computer Society IT Consultancy of the Year Awards for 2007.

Performing a review: this is your starting point

If you become responsible for assurance of projects and programmes, Graham Oakes' book is the perfect starting point.
This book will help you to learn from your own mistakes and understand what is really going on in your projects. The core of this book is built around a number of models for review processes and governance. These models have been derived from practice and between the different chapters you will find case studies and examples. You will find four parts:
- Part I, the introduction explaining project success and project failure and the need for project reviews and assurance to help to understand what's really going on in the projects. This part also looks at the different types of reviews.
- Part II looks at the Project review process itself. Effective project reviews needs more structure than a simple meeting or checklist. To add most value, reviewers need to be able to do four things: Agree terms of reference with the review's sponsor, where to look for information, identify what standards and `good practices' they will review against and last they need a clear understanding of what activities they will undertake. These four things are visualized in a systems model for a review. Several chapters will help you to understand and use this review model. The review parameters are explained, organizational learning, the importance of evidence and logistics matter are described. This part was completed with a table with signs of project stress and an extensive review checklist.
- Part III looks at the challenge to performing effective reviews: getting people to act on their findings. It sets out a simple model for mapping spheres of influence. This so-called `governance matrix' will help you to think about who is accountable for which decisions, and hence what sort of information you need to give them. This three level model: Steer, Manage and Execute perfectly fits with the three levels of Prince2 version 2009. In the Prince2 process model we now also see the levels Directing, Managing and Delivering. Next topic is the importance to frame effective findings and recommendations. Make sure you separate facts, interpretation and recommendations. The last chapter discussed the gaps and overlaps in governance. It looks at the way in which Prince2 looks at assurance (responsibility of the Project board) and what role your PMO can play. Assurance and the PMO must complement each other.
- Part IV looks at some of the factors that need to be considered when setting up a project review or assurance function within an organization, both from an organizational perspective as from the individual reviewer or review team perspective. A business case for reviews, the establishment of a review process and options for funding a review or assurance programme are explained.

For me this is a very helpful book, especially the systems model, the `governance matrix', the extensive review matrix and how to perform effective reviews.
