Reflecting on fieldwork experiences both off- and online, the contributors survey changes and continuities since the classic volume Fieldnotes: The Makings of Anthropology, edited by Roger Sanjek, was published in 1990. They also confront ethical issues in online fieldwork, the strictures of institutional review boards affecting contemporary research, new forms of digital data and mediated collaboration, shifting boundaries between home and field, and practical and moral aspects of fieldnote recording, curating, sharing, and archiving.

The essays draw upon fieldwork in locales ranging from Japan, Liberia, Germany, India, Jamaica, Zambia, to Iraqi Kurdistan, and with diaspora groups of Brazilians in Belgium and Indonesians of Hadhrami Arab descent. In the United States, fieldwork populations include urban mothers of toddlers and young children, teen tech users, Bitcoin traders, World of Warcraft gamers, online texters and bloggers, and anthropologists themselves.

This volume has its roots in the predigital era. Roger's edited volume Fieldnotes: The Makings of Anthropology, published in 1990, focused attention on how anthropologists record their experiences when doing ethnographic fieldwork. On its cover are Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson working in their "mosquito room" in an Iatmul village with the technology of 1938, namely notepads, two manual typewriters, and film cameras. The volume provided an array of perspectives on fieldnotes and fieldwork, introduced useful vocabulary (such as "headnotes" and "scratchnotes"), offered critical guidance to researchers, and has circulated widely and been cited frequently. In the intervening years, technology has changed not only how anthropologists conduct their fieldwork but also how they record, process, analyze, and communicate their findings. These changes present new technical, ethical, and theoretical challenges fieldworkers face that could not have been addressed or anticipated two and a half decades ago.

Roger had begun contemplating a successor volume to Fieldnotes when Susan and he happened to meet at a small restaurant in their New York City neighborhood in May 2011. Susan was an anthropologist studying anonymous discussion boards where parents of toddlers and young children post information and express opinions. Our discussions about the impact of new digital technologies on ethnography continued through a score of meetings during 2011-2014. We shared and commented on readings, Susan helped Roger decode and translate digital terminology, and we agreed to co-organize and coedit a volume on "efieldnotes." In 2012, we invited the contributors to this volume to participate in panels we chaired at the 2013 Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) meetings in Denver and the American Anthropological Association (AAA) meetings in Chicago (all but three could and did); we also circulated a reading list on Internet ethnography, including work by our coauthors, and hosted overlapping groups of efieldnotes participants at dinner discussions during the 2012 AAA meetings in San Francisco, 2013 SfAA and AAA meetings in Denver and Chicago, and 2014 AAA meetings in Washington, D.C. In an interesting twist on the online versus IRL (in real life) question, the SfAA panel has existed as a podcast (http://sfaapodcasts.net/2013/03/25/efieldnotes-makings-of-anthropology-in-a-digital-world/) since 2013, with presentations by Roger, Jenna Burrell, Martin Slama, and Lisa Cliggett followed by a lively audience discussion.

As the wheels of anthropology have turned over the past two and a half decades, so have the wheels of the world and the wheels of our lives during the period in which this book was conceived and produced. In places our readers will visit in chapters that follow, the aftermath of the March 11, 2011, disasters in Japan; the continued violence affecting Kurdistan and Kurds; and the 2014 devastation of Ebola in Liberia have shaped the work and personal lives of many anthropologists, including William Kelly, Diane King, and Mary Moran. More joyfully, seven babies entered the lives of six of our eFieldnotes coauthors: Kenzo Douglas Kubo (Burrell), August and Maurice Jones, Jesus Andrew (King), Julian Channing Kraemer Moore, Luuk Verheijen (Schrooten), and Miles Tratner.

Beginning with its roots in the arguments presented by Aristotle and the Stoics, the central argument concerns whether or not animals have the requisite "rationality" to be treated as equals or near-equals, with most sides arguing that they do not. Charting a recurrent theme in ancient philosophy of mind, he shows that today's controversies about animal rights represent only the most recent chapter in millennia-old debates. Fascinating relfections on animal cognition

Can animal behavior be explained without attributing to them reason or belief? In the first part of this book, Sorabji investigates this question. Since animal behavior is explained by appeal to notions like perception, memory, intention, learning, and emotion, the "no reason or belief" thesis is plausible only if those concepts can be explained without recourse to either reason or belief. Sorabji investigates this with close reference to Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and many other philosophers of antiquity.
In the second part of the book, Sorabji examines the significance of the animal minds debate. He argues that Aristotle's denial of reason and belief to animals has a long and sad legacy that deeply affects humans' relations to animals in Western Culture. Sorabji concludes that a proper account of human minds would motivate new moral judgments.
Sorabji's mastery of the classical literature is truly impressive, and he forges many interesting connections to Donald Davidson's famous denial of animal thought and to many other contemporary debates in the philosophy of mind.

Outstanding and comprehensive book for nephrology professionals

In the market of various text books available out there, this book brings a fresh and comprehensive take on fluid and electrolytes by bringing the most accurate and updated information in an easy to read format which is understandable at any level of training. Whether it is medical student, resident or a nephrology fellow, this book provides a solid knowledge base of various electrolyte and acid base disorders.
Chapters are very well written and contain self descriptive figures along with easy to remember tables which gives comparative analysis of various pathological conditions. I would highly recommend this book to all who are interested in grasping the basics and advanced concepts of acid base disorders and electrolytes which can be at times daunting to understand.
I am currently a nephrology fellow and found this book extremely helpful to clarify concepts and at the same time give me an overview of clinical concepts of renal medicine. Anyone who is interested in nephrology should invest in this book for sure and you won't be disappointed.

All in one book.

This book succeeds, in one internally consistent voice, to integrate top is that challenge all physicians in training and practice. Dr. Reddi has carefully constructed a rigorous text with good diagrams and excellent tables. The cases reinforce the key points of each chapter. As an endocrinologist and internist, basic researcher and medical educator (second year US students), I will use this book for clinical care, review, and didactic purposes. I particularly appreciated the discussions of cerebral salt wasting and disorders of phosphorus and magnesium. There are some typographical errors that should be fixed in a subsequent edition.

One of the best books in the subject, very practical.

The best practical book I have seen in this topic. Not to simple to miss all the important material yet not to profound as some textbooks that you get lost in the molecular issues and lose the practical importance of the clinical aspects. Do not misunderstand me, there are excellent books in nephrology, but if you want to gain knowledge with a good theoretical study in managing and understanding fluids and electrolyte disorders this is the best book I have found so far. Yo can read it cover to cover. It has also case exercices.
If you are in Internal Medicine, Hospital Practice or General Medicine or if you take care of patients in hospital or an emergency department, this is a very good book. The other books in the subject I have read are either to practical or simple without going deep into the theoretical matters or there are textbooks for nephrologist. I highly recomend this book, very well written, a pleasure to study cover to cover.

They were also of course, perfectly free to embrace Islam; but for a Muslim to be converted to another faith involved the death penalty.

Very good read and great for beginners in my

I might finally be able to beat my nephew at chess now. There were alot of strategies that I had no idea about and the pictures in this book were clear to understand. Very good read and great for beginners in my opinion

four stars, this book is a nice read

There are a couple of glaring errors in this short book, but truly it is a solid 4 stars; it will significantly aid a beginner or basic player. However it has little for an intermediate player except some good solid hints and tips. It mainly explains the basics of chess such as moves, but not how to aim or decide how to make moves, but it is an introductory book.

However the best part of this was simple it actually was a fast fun read and that makes this book a great deal !!!

I have read a few of Silman's books and expected this to be a refresher of one of the previous editions but it was much more than that. The ideas and motifs have gone through a complete upgrade to new materials. I thought the earlier editions were good but this one is full of explanations of new lines which bring it into a new era of chess theory. Highly recommended to anyone below 1800 who is striving to attain the title of master.
