great resource
By PeteB
It is hard to believe that she could have exceeded her previous Healing Stories for Challenging Behaviour, however she has. Other people have said this is a great book. It is that. I'd like to say a little about why. Narrative Medicine: The Use of History and Story in the Healing Process and Coyote Healing: Miracles in Native Medicine are a slightly more academic, though still very useful approach to this. Milton Erickson was gifted at using stories in this way, as in My Voice Will Go with You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson.
I am a volunteer storyteller in schools. It is possible to read them out of a book, and do well with them. Most people do this. However, traditional storytelling is more like running a movie in the mind, and telling the story of what's on the imaginary screen. Of course you need stories. This book has some great ones, which by itself makes it worth getting. Indigenous storytellers expand or contract stories based on the audience. I have done this with The Genie and the Hair/El Genio y el pelo, for example. It's a great story, and the kids don't care about the healing metaphor underneath. The Aesop stories can be expanded in this way, also. If you're in a really good storytelling state, the additions just naturally show up, and get incorporated. This is kind of like learning to play music by feel, rather than reading sheet music. It's fun. I like to use physical objects- maybe a basket as a metaphor for a healthy, interwoven community, or to tell a well known story like the three little pigs, but let the kids be the big bad wolf, the pigs, and even the houses. Or in the case of the Genie, I become the genie looking at the kids, and they are in the story, feeling feelings. They love this. Teaching stories are part of all healthy cultures. Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby is actually an African teaching story, about the cycle of violence- comparison, resentment, resistance, and revenge. This story teaches people to interrupt the cycle of violence.
Given all that, this book, Therapeutic storytelling, is a great resource. You get the framework of 101 stories. I found this book because I liked her first book, and scanned to see what other gems she'd put out, and sure enough she had. There are other useful books in the field. This one is very well done.
Healing the Mind through the Power of Story: The Promise of Narrative Psychiatry, and other books by that author, and 101 Healing Stories for Kids and Teens: Using Metaphors in Therapy could be useful for those who want to go further. Therapeutic Stories that Teach and Heal is huge, and probably no longer available.

Moving stories and framework for storytelling
By Coach
The stories in this book are so beautiful and teach values in such a moving way. It is extremely hard to capture the interest of my 4th grade special education students. These stories captivated them 50% or more of the time. That is an excellent track record. Susan has lived in South Africa, East Africa, and Australia and she weaves different traditions to create stories which help children accept other children with difficulties, turn around difficult behaviors, and rise to the challenge of difficult situations. There is a whole section on how to compose a story to provide a healing framework.

A wonderful follow up
By M. B.
This book is a wonderful follow up to Susan's first book "Healing Stories for Challenging Behavior." In this new book there is an extensive list of challenging situations a child might face and many stories to help children through these experiences.
