About the Author
Giacomo Casanova was born in Venice in 1725. His parents, both actors, wanted him to become a priest, but their hopes were dashed when, at sixteen, he was expelled from seminary for immoral misconduct. Probably best-known for his reputation as a womanizer, Casanova was in turn a secretary, a soldier in the Venetian army, a preacher, an alchemist, a gambler, a violinist, a lottery director, and a spy. He translated Homer's Iliad into Italian and collaborated with Da Ponte on the libretto for Mozart's Don Giovanni. He retired in 1785 to the castle of a friend -- Count Waldstein of Bohemia -- in order to write his memoirs.

The Casanova you DON'T KNOW!

I came to this book via reading about the 18th century Scottish economist John Law who ran the FRENCH economy into the ground with the invention of paper money. So what does Casanova have to do with that? Turns out Casanova helped rescue the French economy after having escaped from prison in Venice. REALLY!
As an escape adventure, this one is great, and probably almost all true. You'll never visit the Serene Republic again and pass the Bridge of Sighs without lingering for a moment to consider the hell Casanova lived through while imprisoned in this annex of the Ducal Palace. What I really enjoyed about this memoir is hearing Casanova's "voice" come down through the ages. His "take" on life is continually interesting, and worth further reflection. He was not merely a shallow latin lover gigolo which I had previously thought him to be. He was a real intellectual and a complex mix of realist, and romantic. A "guy's guy" it turns out. The book is fairly short, but a breathless read as you share Casanova's sense of claustrophobia and pray with him that he can effect his escape from "the leads." Great stuff!

A good read!

I find myself wondering how to review a book which is a translation. The story itself is all the work of Casanova himself, whereas the translation is what has enabled me to read it. The tale is an unusual one, of the incarceration of a man known better for the exploits of his later life. He is thrown into a prison in the company of some bizarre fellow prisoners and wardens. It's the story of the ingenuity he used to effect an escape... eventually!
I found the old style of the language a little difficult to get to grips with. The sentences were, to my modern ear, over long and complex, but this was the style at the time. The translator has enabled this to be accessible today and it's certainly a good read.
