Great intro and some very info

I've been an IC designer for twenty years, taking the plunge after 11 years of systems design, though always with a large company behind me. This book is excellent in filling in some of the gaps of how to do things without big company resources.
I'd give it 5 stars except it needs a little updating, as smaller process technologies are now affordable too: the inevitable march of technology,
and there have been developments in tools, but overall an excellent addition to my library and a great introduction for those thinking of taking the plunge into the fascinating and intellectually rewarding business of IC design.

ASIC from a small business perspective

I bought this book a few months after it came out, and read it cover-to-cover. I recently picked it up off the shelf and reread it. It's truly excellent, and I am glad the author took the time to write it.
I own probably 10-15 books on VLSI, and this one is truly unique, because it is written from the perspective of a small business person as opposed to an academic or an engineer at a large company. It excels on two levels -- first, it does a great job of demystification and making the material accessible at a physical level. For example, the anecdote in the book that if you wipe your finger across the surface of the chip, the metal layers will slide right off. Or for instance, the advice on shopping for an epi microscope so can you see what is actually going on is a great way of showing the reader that the world of chip building is right there for them to see. The second level that it excels at is in terms of talking about how to do chips on the cheap. Too often books assume we have the latest tools from Synopsys or Cadence, and a full suite of a IP library. But this books assumes none of that.

A good introduction

The point of view is very designer friendly and use math as last resort. You only want to make your own asics when you'll have finished this book. 4 stars only because the subject is quite mastered, but not completely covered.
