This is a political history of Brittany between 1158 and 1203, when it was ruled by the Angevin king of England, Henry II, and his successors. The book examines the process whereby Henry II gained sovereignty over Brittany, and how it was governed thereafter. This is the first study of this subject, offering an important contribution to the historiography of both Brittany and the "Angevin empire". It also offers a corrective to previous scholarship by suggesting that the Angevin regime in Brittany was neither alien nor opppressive to the Bretons.

Solid Research But E-Book Formatting Problems

This is an excellent study, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a serious examination of this period in Breton history and the Angevins' role in it. I was particularly impressed by the detailed discussions about the background of Henry II's intervention in Breton affairs, the reign of Duke Geoffrey, and the complex feudal relationships between the Breton nobles and the Plantagenets as rulers of Anjou and Normandy. I found, however, succession crisis at the time of John's accession and the disappearance of Duke Arthur I were passed over too briefly in comparison, and I wished there had been the same careful analysis of these episodes. The appendices at the end are very useful.
My chief reservation with this book concerns not the contents but the conversion to the electronic format. The typeface looks a bit faded as if it had been produced by a printer running out of ink, and so it is not as clear as it should be on the electronic paper, especially since a very small font is used in the notes. Words and even individual letters like the capital D are split in the middle for no reason, which means that word searches miss examples. The dates are spaced erratically. In some parts of the book the footnote numbers are linked to the notes, but in other parts the numbers are not only not linked, but they even are split up and attached to words in different lines, apparently at random, so it is necessary to search through the notes at the back, a frustrating process because they are out of order. Even one of the links in the table of contents does not work. This is an expensive e-book and it was worth the money for me, but I was very disappointed that the conversion was not done more carefully.
